Sunday, January 10th, 2016Mountainsmith is launching a new line for Fall which are inspired by the packs we grew up with. Made from 610D Cordura, the line has nine styles, including three coolers.
This is the Wizard. Like all of the packs in the Roots collection, it is offered in Barley (shown) , Heritage Black or Heritage Red which makes these great for mil, LE or SAR use. The coolers are in a leaf camouflage pattern. The Wizard is a 29L top loader daypack with hidden backpanel zippered compartment for a laptop, top lid accessory pocket, accessory pockets with flap on either side at the bottom and hung internal pocket and sunglasses holder.
OR – Mystery Ranch Mission Duffle

Available in three sizes (90, 55 and 40 liters) the Mission Duffle from Mystery Ranch is offered in three colors (Redwood, Black and Nightfall).
The Mission Duffle is made from a TPU coated 1000D Cordura which makes it very water resistant.
There is a large, horseshoe shaped YKK zippered opening. 
At either end, there are zippered pockets for wet gear, dirty clothing or footwear.
Finally, you can deploy backpack straps from a padded compartment along the back of the bag. Available late Summer, 2016.
I’d also like to congratulate D3 (Dana Gleason, III) for winning a Backpacker Magazine Editor’s Choice Award for the Sphimx & Mystic packs. They are great packs and this is the first time that this award has been given to multi-generations. MR founder Dana Gleason has won the award a couple of times in the past.

OR – Granite Gear 223 Pack

Granite Gear introduced the 223 Pack at Summer OR as an in house development. Since then, they’ve gone into production of this American Made Pack for a Japanese distributor. They’ve also refined the design slightly by taking out some of the extra labor steps and better integrating the back panel into the design.
Made from 500D Cordura, it’s a 26liter pack that weighs in at 1lbs 13oz. The 223 also integrates a roll top closure which is a feature I really like. Hopefully, an American distributor will pick it up as well.

Wolf Wind Leatherworks’ Wolf Heavy Duty Operation Bag was designed to improve the organization of the user’s gear, and to ensure that critical tools are kept secured yet readily accessible. The pack splits open into four parts, and has four integrated leather pouches, as well as a ruggedized detachable leather central painel. The Wolf Heavy Duty Operation Bag attaches to larger packs or plate carriers, and can also attach to a user’s belt or to the included Wolf Utility Sling for off-the-shoulder carry. Additionally, every bag is made-to-order and is personalized with the owner’s name.

I was also friends with Brian’s best friend and business partner Dave Ruiz who was taken away from us way before his time. ENUMCLAW, Washington – AMABILIS, a new entry to performance driven apparel and load hauling solutions, is headed by tactical/military industry veteran Brian Abrams. Abrams gained recognition for innovative design while at Adventure Tech, a company he founded in 1991 and sold in 2007. His products were widely used throughout the Spec Op community and a few of his more noteworthy designs include the Marine Corps IWCS (Inclement Weather Combat Shirt and 3SSS(3 Season Sleep System).
In keeping with this heritage, Abrams recently launched AMABILIS, a lifestyle brand anchored in authenticity and inspired by Dave Ruiz, a former Marine and Abrams’ best friend and business partner who passed away unexpectedly in 2012. First to hit the market is their modern re-make of the iconic classic military duffel bag, appropriately named “The Dave” Duffel.
The Dave and Dave Jr (smaller version) pays homage to the standard issue military duffel with it’s cylindrical shape and unique 4-way folding end panel closure system complete with mil-spec metal hardware. That however is where the similarities end and The Dave takes it’s refined, fashion forward good looks and bombproof durability to another level.

Armageddon Gear’s Fat Bags are ultralight bags that offer weapon and body support in the field and range. They are constructed of a Cordura nylon outer shell filled with airweight beads, and feature dual elastic Velcro straps which allow for rapid attachment or detachment from equipment. The included bungee tether and carabiner offers an easy attachment point to belt loops or equipment, and moves with the user in a variety of positions without the need to remove the tether.

TwinNeedle Gear – MollyMe Pack

The MollyMe Pack is the newest pack from NZ-based TwinNeedle Gear. It features a roll top lid that won’t let water in and allows for varying loads. It also has an overload panel that will allow you to secure a helmet underneath or doubles up to be a rifle scabbard with several attachment points. A full PALS platform enables you to mount additional pouches on the pack. Rear covered access zip for hydration and comms. Removable back panel EVA foam and internal hydration attachment point. Remove the back panel and the pack will fold up and fit into a SA water bottle pouch. Can be mounted onto your vest or carrier with the TwinNeedle pack2armour kit.
