Panacis and Solace Power Collaborate for Soldier System Power

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Panacis Inc., a global leader in advanced lithium ion battery design and manufacture, and Solace Power, a leading innovator in the delivery of wireless power, today announced they were working together to reduce and eventually eliminate power cables for soldier-worn equipment.

The companies are working together to demonstrate wireless power transmission and charging capabilities. The demo will show a Panacis battery with integrated Wireless Power Technology from Solace Power, resulting in the first wirelessly rechargeable battery for soldier systems and other military applications, eliminating the need for cables and connectors.

“The average soldier will carry 16 to 20 pounds of batteries and related cables on a 72-hour deployment,” stated Steve Carkner, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Panacis. “Our goal is to use Solace Power’s technology to reduce both the weight burden and the tangle of wiring that connects equipment to our batteries.”

Neil Chaulk, VP Business Development for Solace Power stated that, “Wireless power enables the delivery of more utility to the user, including soldiers in the field. When combined with the advanced lithium ion battery technology developed by Panacis, we have an extremely flexible tool in terms of energy storage and ease of access. Together we can deliver a fantastic value proposition that truly will reduce the soldier burden.”

Panacis will host technology from Solace Power at the CANSEC trade show, 29 and 30 May in Ottawa. Visit Panacis and representatives from Solace Power at the Panacis Booth #927 to find out more about wireless power.

Panacis raises $1.8M for Soldier Battery Pack

Saturday, April 27th, 2013

Ottawa-based Panacis Inc. is expanding its local presence to go full-steam ahead with commercialization of its new military battery system following financial contributions from investors and taxpayers.

“The FedDev Ontario investment supports engineering and marketing development activities, which are both essential to the successful launch of the Soldier Sharepack product into international markets,” stated Panacis CEO Janet Mason.

After raising a funding round of $1.2 million from members of the Capital Angel Network, Panacis attracted $613,457 from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, known as FedDev Ontario, through its program that matches 50 per cent of investor contributions.

The funding will be used to fund the Soldier Sharepack, a wearable energy storage system that garners additional battery power from a user’s movement and renewable sources such as solar.

Panacis also plans to hire up to 15 additional full-time employees in Ottawa to scale up its manufacturing capabilities, according to the release.

WASP Destruction Test

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

The WASP (Wearable Advanced Soldier Power) X-90 is put through a destruction test at Fort Bliss, Texas. Solar Stik developed the WASP in cooperation with another company, Orlando, Florida-based Advanced Power Electronics Corporation (ApECOR). ApECOR’s benchmark X-90 multi-chemistry battery charger is the core component of the WASP. The X-90 can be used to charge many military battery, including the popular BB-2590 rechargeable Li-Ion battery. In this video you can see it put through the wringer.

OR – PowerPot

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

We haven’t mentioned PowerPot since their Kickstarter campaign but when we ran into them here at OR Winter Market we had to give you an update. They’re a local Salt Lake City company and assemble the PowerPots right here in town. A standard kit comes with the Pot, light and charging tips. As long as your are applying heat to the Pot, the system produces up to 5w and charges your devices via USB. The secret to success is in the tips which include circuits that tell the device to draw the maximum amount of power from the Pot.

In addition to the PowerPot they’re working on a cool new item. This simple bar meter shows you how much power you are sending from the PowerPot to your device. They built this using a DIY 3D printer!

One thing I love about PowerPot is that almost everyone in the company are Eagle Scouts!

SOMA – Solar Stik Inc

We’ve been big fans of Solar Stik’s kinetic energy collection system for some time now. But now they’ve partnered with INI Power to offer their IntelliGEN flex-fuel generator which we wrote about earlier this year. They both offer a variety of energy collection and management technologies and what’s even better, they are more than happy to work together.

It might seem odd to see energy companies at a medical show but you have to consider that many medical devices require power to work. In fact, think about disaster areas. Not only is there a great deal of suffering that requires medical attention, but there’s generally no shore power either.

Look for more info soon on both of these great companies.

EFB has developed the AN/PRC154 Charger with side pan connector to allow one set of cables to both power a radio and end user device (EUD) as well as provide a data path. It was designed for Nett Warrior and there are currently in excess of 400 of these currently undergoing evaluation. The charger is low profile and they’ve developed a pouch specifically to accommodate it and the radio.

Based on that project, they are working with Fires Warrior to expand the personal LAN to include input from the Vector 21. This required a module to convert data from RS232 standard to USB. Once again, everything is controlled by the EUD.
