Basic Training With MACP Founder Matt Larsen

Monday, August 9th, 2010

In their September and October hard copy issues, Black Belt magazine will publish articles on Matt Larsen (US Army, Ret), who is considered the father of the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP). While on active duty Larsen was the primary author of Field Manual 3-25.150 (Combatives) which spells out the program in great detail. Taking a page from Mixed Martial Arts, MACP works hand in hand with the physical fitness regime to make movements second nature. Additionally, MACP teaches Soldiers weapons retention skills and limited knife fighting.

Be sure to drop by Black Belt’s website and check out the videos featuring Matt Larsen.

Practical Applied Stress Training

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Practical Applied Stress Training (PAST) is a tailored physical fitness program for Tactical Law Enforcement teams by Optimal SWAT. Designed to help the LEO deal with the physical side of stress and keep rounds on target, PAST prepares students to be on the “wrong end of statistics” meaning training for worst case scenarios. The result is that situations LEOs regularly encounter will be that much easier to master. Author Will Brink feels that traditional methods of short sprints or push ups before a shooting drill employed during many training courses don’t go far enough to recreate the real world. Instead, he has designed a program that incorporates functional strength, dealing with unbalanced loads, and overall strength and fitness combined with shooting scenarios.

PAST does not rely on expensive equipment but rather focuses on functional strength using ropes climbs, vehicles pulls, sand bag and telephone pole carries as well as other activities. Additionally, traditional firearms training tools such as shot timers are used in that portion of the program. This keeps the program within reach of even the most resource constrained department.

The PAST program covers training the individual as well as the team. To this end, the manual offers sample training plans and drills but also focuses on the program at a conceptual level to help teams develop their own tailored program. The author also addresses different forms of measuring progress to allow different users to get the most from the experience. Overall, it looks to be an excellent training tool for the LEO and should be considered for certain military formations as well.

Paul Howe Cancels Tactical Team Leader Classes

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

In the April 2010 issue of Combat Shooting and Tactics newsletter, trainer Paul Howe has announced that he is canceling all on-the-road Tactical Team Leader classes due to complaints by potential students that the physical requirements are too demanding. He challenges potential students with a goal of running five miles in 50 minutes in order to ensure they are fit enough to safely negotiate the course’s graduation exercise. However, he does plan on offering the course again at his own facility as well as for specially vetted customers in the future.

Corps Strength: A Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant’s Program for Elite Fitness

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I would like to introduce my readers to Paul Roarke. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant after 28 years. That alone is a pretty good feat but he did it keeping his health and fitness intact. He attributes his success to a system called “Working Fitness” he developed initially to keep himself in shape, and later to help mold Marines in Aviation Ordnance A school. He has been so successful that he now uses this same philosophy to help international students at NAS Pensacola.

PJ is the real deal. Soldier Systems Daily sponsor Bates Footwear actually introduced him to me. He runs in their boots and he has enough miles in them to recommend them for others who want to run in boots.

"Corps Strength" by MGySgt Paul Roarke, USMC (Ret)

A few points about his philosophy that I think will hit home. This isn’t your standard Marine Corps or military physical fitness routine, but rather a comprehensive system that draws the most useful aspects of many different exercise methods together. Meaning, he’s adopted what works. Formally titled the “Enhanced Physical Readiness System (EPRS)”, its main goal is to improve your bodies ability to perform (not just look good), maintain a healthy bodyweight, and stay injury free for life. It is designed primarily for military personnel, firefighters, law enforcement (readers of SSD) and anyone who must rely on their bodies to make a living. the author call these people “working athletes” but recommends the system for any healthy person.

“Corps Strength” is a fun, leisurely read, full of “Sea Stories” that bring the point home. The author is a real salt of the earth guy and has no qualms about telling you how he got it wrong so that you won’t as well. He isn’t about selling you on some crazy fad nor trying to convince you to sign up for some sport that takes a lot of equipment or years of training to get right. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t advocate having a coach. He also provides an extensive appendix providing a framework for various workout routines as well as an exercise guide with photographs.

It has been a pleasure working with a fellow military retiree and small business owner and I encourage you to support him. Corps Strength is available for order. The books are enroute to retailers from the printer and will be trans-shipped to you as soon as they arrive. For anyone that wants some more info on Corps Strength, Master Guns has a website corpsstrength.com.

Ranger, Athlete, Warrior

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

The US Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment has updated their Ranger, Athlete, Warrior website with a great deal of new resources for their human performance initiative which goes far beyond a typical unit PT program. According to information provided by the website, they are on version 3.0 of the program and constantly monitor it to ensure they are getting the most for their troops.
