Forging the Future of Combat: Inside CALFEX with the Next Generation Squad Weapon

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — In Fort Campbell, Soldiers from 1st Mobile Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), recently conducted a Combined Arms Live-Fire Exercise, utilizing the M7 rifle and M250 automatic rifle — marking a critical step in validating the Next Generation Squad Weapon platform.

Designed to replace the long-serving M4 and M249, NGSW brings new assurance to reshape small-unit tactics with enhanced range, improved lethality and advanced optics. The CALFEX set a high-tempo environment to assess the system’s performance under realistic conditions with combined arms elements, including dismounted infantry, aviation and indirect fire support.

“My first impression was how reliable the M7 was — we didn’t experience any malfunctions throughout the entire CALFEX,” said Staff Sgt. Caleb Harris, serving as a Platoon Sergeant from 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment.

“That level of performance gave us the confidence to push the weapon to its limits,” he added.

This reliability allowed teams to maintain tempo throughout training, adjusting fire and maneuver without the disruptions commonly associated with older platforms. Additionally, fire teams explored new bounding techniques and sectors of fire, ensuring the improved stopping power of the M7 and M250 was effectively applied in both offense and defense. These tactical evolutions highlight the importance of early and continuous integration of emerging capabilities into mission planning at the lowest echelons.

The enhanced range and improved ergonomics of the M7 allowed for greater flexibility in small-unit leadership and fire team control. “As team leader, I was able to direct my guys to engage targets at extended distances while taking a brief tactical pause myself — not off the line completely, but just enough to reposition and get more accurate shots from better cover,” said Spc. Brandon Horvath, 1st Battalion 506th Infantry Regiment.

He emphasized the rifle’s design contributed directly to improved combat flow, especially in high-pressure scenarios. “I really like the side-charging handle. Internally, with the buffer system, it’s a lot easier for me to charge the weapon from the side when repositioning — it just makes transitions smoother,” said Horvath.

The NGSW’s integration into team-level tactics reinforced the need for adaptable employment strategies, particularly in open terrain or against fortified positions by giving Soldiers the ability to shape the battlefield from a distance.

Spc. Tristan Mann, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, observed the practical benefits of increased range during tactical movements. “Being able to engage from farther out gave us more control over the fight. It changed how we moved, when we closed in, and how we set our fields of fire,” he said.

Cpt. Evan Myers from 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, highlighted a new level of control and effectiveness with the M250 during the exercise. “The 250 has semi, which makes it easier to control a single shot or two rounds instead of doing 6-8 rounds,” he noted. “The suppressor reduces the muzzle flash, which is a huge advantage for maintaining concealment in low-light engagements.” His observations further emphasize how the system enhances both precision and survivability on the modern battlefield.

While the NGSW’s firepower and ergonomics were widely praised, Soldiers also noted the importance of evaluating how the system integrates with current loadouts and sustainment practices.

The M7’s slightly increased weight compared to the M4 — particularly when paired with the larger 6.8mm magazines. “It definitely feels a bit heavier on the kit, especially once you’re carrying a full combat load,” said Mann. “But the extra weight didn’t slow us down — if anything, it made every shot count more.”

Despite the strong initial impressions, leaders recognize time and sustained training are essential to fully validate the weapon system’s long-term value. “The more time we get to train with it, the more we will get to see how it really works,” said 1st Sgt. William Melko from 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment.

His comments reflect a balanced perspective shared by many senior leaders: while the NGSW shows great promise, true validation will only come with sustained exposure, data and experience across formations.

The integration of the NGSW into the CALFEX marked a significant milestone in the Army’s ongoing modernization efforts. Across planning, employment, execution, and sustainment, the M7 and M250 proved to be reliable, lethal and tactically transformative. Looking ahead, 1MBCT is preparing for its upcoming rotation at the Joint Readiness Training Center, where the NGSW will be further implemented and evaluated in a simulated operational environment. This continued use will provide valuable forward feedback. Exercises like this ensure the system is not only technologically sound but also operationally effective under realistic combat conditions

Hanwha and WB Group Sign Term Sheet Agreement for Guided Missile Joint Venture in Poland

April 15, 2025 – Warsaw: Hanwha Aerospace has signed a term sheet agreement to establish a joint venture with Poland’s largest private defence company, WB Group, with the aim of manufacturing guided missiles in Poland for the Homar-K Multiple Rocket Launch System.

The agreement marks a key milestone in Hanwha’s localisation strategy, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Poland’s defence modernisation and industrial development. It also underlines Hanwha’s growing role as a strategic partner for NATO and EU member states.

Under the agreement, Hanwha Aerospace will hold a 51% majority stake in the new entity, with WB Electronics (a WB Group subsidiary) holding the remaining 49%. The joint venture will commence operations following approval from Poland’s Antimonopoly Committee.

The agreement was signed by Piotr Wojciechowski, Chairman of WB Group, and Mr. Billy Boo-hwan Lee, Head of Hanwha Aerospace PGM Business Group. Among the high-profile participants at the ceremony were Mr. Pawe? Bejda, Deputy Minister of Defense; Gen. bryg. dr Artur Kuptel, Head of Armaments Agency; Mr. Hoonmin Lim, Ambassador of the Korean Embassy in Poland; and Mr. Peter Bae, CEO of Hanwha Aerospace Europe.

“With this term sheet agreement, we have just taken the most important step toward establishing our joint venture with WB Group. We believe the joint venture will contribute to the growth of Polish industrial capability, as well as to the modernisation of the Polish Armed Forces. Thanks to this endeavour, our industries will also gain the opportunity to jointly enter new European markets with competitive, combat-proven missile technologies,” said Billy Boo-hwan Lee, Head of Hanwha Aerospace PGM Business Group.

The term sheet shows a clear roadmap for building a missile production site in Poland. The cooperation between WB Electronics and Hanwha Aerospace is a demonstration of how the Polish and Korean industries can work together and how each company complements the other. The factory will increase Poland’s independence in ammunition production and provide huge potential for industrial and economic growth. We expect the plant to become a supply centre not only for the Polish armed forces but also for the armies of other European countries. I want to point out that it will be a Polish company operating by Polish law and paying taxes in the country. The joint venture will employ Polish engineers and workers and will create a supply chain in Poland and the broader European market.” said Piotr Wojciechowski, Chairman of WB Group.

The joint venture will be responsible for fulfilling the requirements for producing 80km-range CGR-80 guided missiles for the Homar-K, a Polish version of the K239 Chunmoo MRLS, under another executive contract for the Homar-K. It is also focused on jointly marketing the guided missiles to neighbouring countries in Europe.

Hanwha Aerospace has signed two executive contracts since 2022 on the supply of 290 Chunmoo rocket artillery systems that can fire both 80km- and 290km-range guided rockets.

The Homar-K programme is referred to as one of the most successful examples for Hanwha’s localisation efforts in Poland, with extensive involvement from the Polish defence industry. Under the Homar-K programme, Polish defence companies oversee the integration and assembly of the long-range rocket launcher system, mounted on Polish Jelcz 8×8 chassis. The Homar-K also features the Topaz combat management system, developed by WB, and other Polish components and subsystems.

Army’s Advanced Manufacturing Revolutionizes Mortar System, Enhancing Soldier Safety

ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. — In a significant leap forward for Soldier safety and operational effectiveness, the 120mm mortar system’s attenuating blast cone has undergone a transformative redesign.

“Our service members are the bedrock of our nation’s defense,” stated Col. Dave Guida, commander of Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center. “They stand ready, modern and prepared to defeat any adversary. Equipping them with the best possible equipment is an imperative priority. This redesigned ABC is evidence of that commitment.”

The project, spearheaded by the Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence at RIA-JMTC, leverages the power of additive manufacturing to create a lighter, more efficient, cost effective and safer ABC. This innovation directly addresses concerns regarding head trauma and concussions associated with the legacy equipment, underscoring the Army’s unwavering commitment to equipping its soldiers with the most advanced technologies available.

“Collaboration was the cornerstone of this project,” explained Edward Flinn, director of the AM CoE. “We ensured it not only met, but exceeded expectations in terms of functionality, durability and ease of use in the field.”

The original eight-part ABC presented significant challenges for Soldiers in the field, contributing to fatigue and hindering maneuverability, especially in challenging terrain. Recognizing the need for improvement, the AM CoE embarked on a rigorous redesign process, initially streamlining the ABC to a two-part system and ultimately refining it to a four-part configuration based on extensive feedback. This iterative approach ensured the final design met the rigorous demands of real-world operations, balancing weight reduction with structural integrity and ease of maintenance.

“Additive manufacturing empowers us to push the boundaries of design,” Flinn elaborated. “We can create components that are simultaneously lighter, stronger and more adaptable to the ever-changing demands of the battlefield. This is a true game-changer for military equipment design and production and it’s happening right now at the RIA-JMTC AM CoE.”

The selection of titanium, renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, further enhances the ABC’s performance. While the 3D-printed components are solid, the strategic use of titanium and the design freedoms afforded by additive manufacturing have resulted in an ABC that weighs less than half of its conventionally manufactured counterpart. This significant weight reduction, achieved without compromising structural integrity, enhances Soldier mobility and reduces fatigue, crucial factors in demanding operational environments. This highlights the power of AM to optimize performance not just through complex internal structures, but also through material selection and overall design efficiency.

Beyond the immediate benefits of a lighter, more efficient design, the AM process offers significant cost and time savings across the entire product lifecycle. Eliminating the need for expensive tooling and lengthy lead times associated with traditional manufacturing, AM enables rapid prototyping and on-demand production. This agility is crucial in responding to rapidly evolving operational needs and maintaining a decisive advantage in an increasingly complex global landscape.

“The ability to rapidly prototype and iterate designs using AM is transformative,” Guida emphasized. “It allows us to respond quickly to emerging threats and deliver solutions to the Warfighter at an unprecedented pace. This speed and flexibility are essential in maintaining leverage against any adversary.”

While the initial production run of 700 ABCs utilized traditional manufacturing methods for comparative analysis and to ensure a smooth transition, the AM CoE is poised to take over full production during the sustainment phase. This data-driven approach allows the Army to thoroughly evaluate the long-term cost-effectiveness and efficiency of AM, paving the way for wider adoption of this groundbreaking technology.

“RIA-JMTC, Tank-automotive and Armaments Command and Army Materiel Command work tirelessly across the Department of Defense to synchronize logistics, build supply chain resilience and achieve combat readiness goals,” Guida said. “A modernized organic industrial base, coupled with data-driven predictive and precision logistics, ensures we can provide the right parts and materiel to Soldiers when and where they need them. When the need arises for new, upgraded or modernized equipment, the skilled artisans of the OIB stand ready to deliver.”

Sustainment leaders are increasingly relying on data analytics and advanced information systems to accurately predict battlefield requirements, effectively connecting the foxhole to the factory. This focus on strategic readiness is essential for maintaining a prepared and responsive force. Continuous transformation ensures the Army can deliver trained, cohesive and lethal forces capable of meeting future challenges in complex operational environments.

“The redesigned ABC is an equipment upgrade that embodies the Army’s commitment to Soldier safety, technological advancement and a future-ready force prepared for any contingency,” Flinn said. “This initiative reinforces the principle that strategic readiness begins at home and that investing in advanced manufacturing and data-driven logistics is essential for maintaining a decisive edge on the future battlefield.”

Big Milestone for the LAND 300 Program!

The LAND 300 program (formerly LAND 159) has reached a major achievement with the Sidearm Weapon System (SWS), hitting initial fielding ahead of schedule.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of NIOA, CASG and the Australian Army, the SWS is now ready for service. It features the Sig Sauer P320 pistol, Romeo 2 red dot sight, white light torch, holster and retractable lanyard, which will be officially known by Defence as the F9 Pistol in service.

Strike Industries Strike A2 Blast Shield

Las Vegas, Nevada — Strike Industries has released a new Concussion Reduction Device, the Strike A2 Blast Shield, which directly attaches onto any A2 Flash Hider muzzle device (chambered for either 5.56mm or 9mm).

Similar to the Original Oppressor, the A2 Blast Shield is installed via rotating the device to tighten onto its internal detents after slipping it over an A2 muzzle device.

Its purpose is to redirect and reduce concussive blasts from live fire. The A2 Blast Shield also has six ports to help retain the birdcage’s natural flash suppression and compensating qualities. With its unique fork locking design, this Blast Shield includes a safety mechanism that allows for the fork to stay locked and secured even if the device has not been fully tensioned.

The A2 Blast Shield was inspired by Strike’s development of its Oppressors as this product was designed to solve a looming problem of aging military, government, and law enforcement agencies’ armories: With many AR-15 and M4-style rifles getting older, many of these entities have been forced to retire their old inventories to update with newer platforms which can be costly.
