Next Generation Squad Weapons Complete Desert Environmental Testing

Friday, August 15th, 2025

FORT BLISS, Texas – No matter where Soldiers are deployed, from the jungles of the Pacific to the deserts of the Middle East, the performance of their weapons and gear is paramount. Given the U.S. Army’s extensive history of operating in harsh, arid environments, it’s essential that the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) system be rigorously tested under extreme heat conditions.

In the desert heat of Fort Bliss, TX, where temperatures averaged over 100?F, Project Manager Soldier Lethality (PM SL) and the Army Test and Evaluation Command (ATEC) conducted the Hot Weather Test for the M7 Rifle, M250 Automatic Rifle, and XM157 Fire Control. Supported by Soldiers from the 1st Armored Division, the team spent weeks performing various tests, including New Equipment Training, weapons qualification, tactical vehicle ingress/egress drills, and a 72-hour Force-on-Force exercise.

“Throughout these exercises, we closely monitored Soldiers’ feedback, focusing on the weapon systems’ suitability, reliability, and maintainability in desert conditions,” explained Maj. Mark Fischbach, Assistant Program Manager for Soldier Weapons. “Soldiers also provided valuable input on how the weapons performed in practical, real-world scenarios.”

During the exercises, the evaluators also focused on ingress and egress drills from the Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV) and the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). Soldiers, especially mounted infantry, must be able to enter and exit these vehicles with their weapons and gear intact in order to remain lethal.

The successful trials in the harsh desert environment underscore the NGSW’s ability to meet the demands of future warfare, offering Soldiers a more reliable, lethal, and adaptable weapon system. The NGSW Desert Test is one in a series of environmental tests that includes arctic, desert, and tropic.

The M7 Rifle and M250 Automatic Rifle are the successors to the M4A1 Carbine and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) respectively. Both weapons utilize the XM157 Fire Control, a 1-8x variable magnification optic with a number of advanced technologies integrated into the optic, and the 6.8mm family of ammunition. The NGSW provides Soldiers significantly more accuracy, range, and lethality beyond legacy weapon systems capabilities.

The NGSW is currently being fielded to Units across the Close Combat Force (CCF).

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems Highlights Its Missile Defense Portfolio at the 2025 Space and Missile Defense Symposium

Monday, August 11th, 2025

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., August 4, 2025 – General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) returns to the Space and Missile Defense Symposium to highlight its missile defense solutions supporting Golden Dome, a layered missile defense architecture designed to protect the nation from a range of advanced missile threats including hypersonic, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as other airborne threats.

GA-EMS will showcase the designs for their Bullseye™ missile and Long-Range Maneuvering Projectile (LRMP), with a 1:1 scale model and 1:2 scale model in their booth. The company has accelerated integration and testing of its missile defense technologies to demonstrate advanced capabilities and move rapidly toward field deployment.

“Our LRMP aligns with dynamic defense requirements for improved long-range precision strikes and minimizes operational uncertainty by integrating into existing artillery systems,” said Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS. “The next phase of full-system testing will validate the projectile’s performance across complex scenarios and ensure seamless integration with missile defense frameworks.”

Bullseye is a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 8 missile system that shares 80% of its components with combat-proven TRL 9 missile systems, fully validated through successful real-world operations.

Attendees visiting Booth #531 will engage directly with GA-EMS experts to explore system designs and planned field-testing initiatives for both LRMP and Bullseye. GA-EMS will also feature its portfolio of laser weapon systems, hypersonics and sensor payloads for missile defense and tracking-offering greater flexibility and capability to support both offensive and defensive missions.

USAF Characterizes Fatality at FE Warren AFB as Involuntary Manslaughter, Not Faulty M18 – Arrests Perpetrator

Friday, August 8th, 2025

The US Air Force has released the following statement regarding the death of Amn Lovan on 20 July, 2025 as involuntary manslaughter, committed by another Airman.

“Air Force authorities are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the facts and circumstances of the fatal firearm discharge at F.E. Warren AFB on 20 July 2025 that involved an M18 pistol.  Out of an abundance of caution and based on initial reporting, Air Force authorities ordered various safety precautions involving the M18 after this tragic event.  Since then, the investigation has progressed and an individual has now been arrested on suspicion of making a false official statement, obstruction of justice, and involuntary manslaughter.  As with all individuals accused of a crime, the person arrested in this case is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.  The investigation in this case is ongoing and further details are not available.”

We are waiting to hear from Air Force Global Strike Command whether they have lifted the restriction on use of the M18 pistol put in place in late July.

Update: AFGSC has stated that they have not completed inspections of their M18 fleet yet. We’re not particularly surprised considering it took the command 22 months to release a report on a HMMWV rollover in 23 which resulted in a fatality. They seem to lack a sense of urgency. We hope that doesn’t extend to use of their portions of the nuclear triad in the event they are ever called upon.

German Bundeswehr Selects CZ P-10 F as New Sidearm

Friday, July 25th, 2025

Reports indicate that the German Bundeswehr recently selected the CZ P-10 F as their new standard-issue sidearm after a competition conducted by Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

The new pistol which beat out the Arex Delta and GLOCK G17 will replace the Heckler & Koch P8 (based on the USP) and be designated as the P13.

The contract promises a minimum order of 62,000 pistols with a ceiling of up to 186,000 total pistols. A €25 million budget for the procurement has been submitted to the Bundestag.

CANSOFCOM Adopts Glock 45

Thursday, July 24th, 2025

In a recently released recruiting video, Canada Special Operations Forces Command spilled the beans on a couple of new capabilities.

While there was no public contract award, this Operator is seen shooting a G45 (which is 9mm not .45). CANSOFCOM transitioned to the C22 pistol based on the SIG P320 along with the rest of the Department of National Defence. However, based upon the fact that it made into this new video, they’ve likely been with the command for some time now.

When we inquired with DND about the new weapon, they provided us with this response:

“CANSOFCOM employs a range of weapon systems to meet a diverse set of mission requirements. We will not comment further on specific equipment details to protect operational security.”

There’s another Easter Egg in the video as well. This RECCE operator’s rifle is equipped with the Millbrook Strategic Sciences Multi Function Muzzle Device. That contract was announced during SHOT Show this year.

Here’s the entire video.
