Army Moving Forward with Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) Program

Wednesday, March 15th, 2023

The Army is continuing its rigorous testing and evaluation of small arms systems to meet their requirements and deliver increased lethality to the Soldier. Last April, the Army awarded a contract to Sig Sauer to produce the NGSW Rifle, Automatic Rifle and a 6.8mm family of ammunition to replace the M4A1 Carbine, M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and 5.56mm family of ammunition within the Close Combat Force.  Since that time, PEO Soldier, JPEO Armaments & Ammunition, Product Manager (PdM) Next Generation Weapons, PdM Small Caliber Ammunition, Soldier Lethality – Cross Functional Team, Sig Sauer, and the collective Army enterprise have worked feverishly to get this new capability ready to field to the Army.

During the competition to award the contract, the team conducted over 100 technical tests, fired over 1.5 million rounds of 6.8mm ammunition and executed over 20,000 hours of Soldier testing across three different vendor weapon systems.  The team continued this pace by conducting a Soldier Touch Point last fall with a squad of National Guard Soldiers and a squad from the 75th Ranger Regiment.

“The Soldier Touch Point allowed the program and Sig Sauer the opportunity to solicit direct Soldier feedback on the systems post-contract award and inform simple design changes to improve the weapons before going into Production Qualification Test and Operational Tests in the coming year,” said Capt. Tyler Morgan Assistant Product Manager, NGSW

A Soldier with the 75th Ranger Regiment said on the XM7, “Absolutely would take this weapon to combat in a heartbeat. It is light, functions very well, has an awesome load system, and is easy to handle and engage targets with.”

The next step in the NGSW program will be Production Qualification Testing (PQT), May-July 2023. PM Soldier Lethality is preparing to accept delivery of two dozen XM7 Rifles and XM250 Automatic Rifles in preparation for testing. Once these deliveries are received, the Aberdeen Test Center (ATC) will conduct 31 tests including weapons reliability, immersion, cook-off, flash and blank fire performance. The ATC will also test environmental conditions like extreme hot and cold, sand, dust, salt fog and mud.

Following PQT, the Army will conduct an operational test focused on setting the conditions for the First Unit Equipped scheduled in the second quarter of FY24.  Future operational testing is planned for FY24 to assess natural environments and airborne qualifications.

LWRC – SMG Pistol End Plate w/ QD Socket

Monday, March 6th, 2023

While the ATF’s recent Pistol Brace ruling sends shockwaves (no pun intended) throughout the industry, and seeks to make millions of legally-purchased weapons illegal with the stroke of a pen, industry is doing what industry does best: adapting. Such is one case with LWRC’s SMG Pistol End Plate.

Designed specifically for pistol brace variants of LWRC’s own SMG 45, this end cap plate converts the SMG 45 to a “fully operational SMG Pistol”, complete with a built-in QD sling mount. The End Cap Plate is made of 6065-T6 aluminum with a Type III hard coat anodized finish.

Enforce Tac 23 – Rheinmetall Squad Support Weapon 40

Wednesday, March 1st, 2023

Rheinmetall is exhibiting their Squad Support Weapon 40, a semi-auto, box-fed 40mm Grenade launcher. It fires Rheinmetall’s new programmable medium velocity rounds as well as legacy low velocity rounds. These rounds can be programmed for airburst and include:

HE Fragmentation (HEFRAG16)

Anti-Tank (HEDP16)

Door Breaching (HEBE14)

Air Burst (HEAB)

Training (TPM, TPM-T)

Illumination / Fog

Sound & Flash and Stimulus Ammunition (CS)

While we see a 5 round magazine, there is also a 3 round magazine under development which sits flush with the bottom of the pistol grip. Additionally, a 10 round magazine is under development. The weapons weighs about 4 kg.

This is the programmer which is the same one they are using for high velocity 40mm rounds fired from the Mk19 and HK GMG. It programs the round via IR.

With the US Army poised to release the Precision Grenadier System requirement, the SSW40 will surely be a contender.

Enforce Tac 23 – H&K SFP9 CC

Tuesday, February 28th, 2023

The SFP9 CC is Heckler & Koch’s answer to the current demand for 9mm compact carry pistols.

This 10 round pistol is still under development but is planned for release. In this configuration, it holds 10 rounds but there are plans for a 13 round magazine.

BAE Systems Receives Contract for 20 Additional CV90 Mjölner Mortar Systems for Swedish Army

Tuesday, January 31st, 2023

This new order for 20 additional CV90 mortar systems for the Swedish Army brings the total fleet to 80 vehicles, planned to be in service by 2025

BAE Systems has received a contract modification from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to build 20 additional CV90 mortar vehicles. The approximately $30 million contract has been awarded to the BAE Systems Swedish joint venture HB Utveckling AB, which combines BAE Systems’ Hägglunds and Bofors manufacturing capabilities. Production will be performed at BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.

“This new contract modification for additional mortar vehicles ensures that soldiers will benefit from this critical capability in the near future,” said Tommy Gustafsson-Rask, managing director of BAE Systems Hägglunds. “We look forward to continuing to support the Swedish Army’s efforts to modernize and increase its combat power.”

The original contract for 40 CV90 Mjölner systems was awarded in 2016, and deliveries of the systems started in 2019 and were completed on time in 2020. In February 2022, FMV awarded the first follow-on contract for 20 additional systems, as well as the upgrade of the 40 systems already in service, to bring them all to the same standard by integrating the Swedish Army’s new C4I LSS Mark system. Both FMV and BAE Systems have heralded this program as a benchmark for collaborative development.

Once the contract modification deliveries are completed in 2025, the Swedish Army will operate 80 CV90 mortar vehicles in its fleet. The vehicles, known as Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90, provide critical indirect firepower capabilities in the mechanized brigades.

There are approximately 1,300 CV90s, in multiple variants, in service with Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. The vehicle has a combat-proven track record and is designed to accommodate future growth to meet evolving missions. More recently, both Slovakia and the Czech Republic have selected CV90 to replace their legacy infantry fighting vehicle fleets.
