Mechanix Wear Special Project American Sniper

February 8th, 2015

maxresdefault

For American Sniper, Mechanix Wear recreated four discontinued models of their gloves that were used by US Military personnel during the Iraq war: Core-Four Original, FastFit, M-Pact, and M-Pact 2.

If you’re wondering, Mechanix Wear doesn’t have any plans to bring these gloves back to market. If anything else, it serves as a reminder on how brands have progressed since the start of the war.

Ask SSD – “What Are You Going To Do To Make This Right?”

February 7th, 2015

I recently received an email from someone named John R. What made this email stick out from the thousands of others I receive each week was the subject. It was a straightforward, “Very upset Customer”. Well, as you can imagine, that certainly got my attention.

I read his email. The closing of this very passionate prose, really got to me. “What Are You Going To Do To Make This Right?” Indeed, what was I going to do?

I scratched my head. I thought about it. I conferred with friends. And then, it hit me. I’d share it on SSD.

So here it is, in all its glory. However, I did make one slight change; I edited out the author’s last name. Other than that, it’s all him.

To whom this may concern,

My name is John R, and I live in a small town named Savannah, TN 38372. I have been a subscriber of your magazine for awhile, but my sub. Recently ran out. I was in my local Walgreens last night, and seen what I thought was a new edition of your magazine. The magazine said sell by 3/2/15. So, I bought it, and when I got home, I realized that I had already gotten the same magazine, but it came back in the first of the Fall, and the sell by date was 10/2014. Walgreens will not return my magazine, and I am absolutely furious that you guys would be deceiving people into thinking they are getting the newest edition of your magazine. My question for you is what are you going to do to make this right?

Very angry customer,
John R.

Below is a couple pics.

Gunfighter Moment – Pat McNamara

February 7th, 2015

We cannot outperform our self-image. Many of us have a predetermined notion of where our peaks and valleys lie. Every once in a while we will outperform our current belief or nose dive and completely shit the bed. Enter the world of cognitive dissonance.

Using my ‘Five Second Standard ‘drill as an example, we should perform fairly consistent with incremental improvements over time. Use IPSC targets and yard markers starting at 7 yards, 10 yards, 15, 20, etc. I call these yard lines ‘levels’.

Set a timer to a five second par time. Start at the 7 yard line (level 1), weapon at a ready position. On the timer’s ‘Beep’, engage your target twice within those five seconds. Next, draw and engage your target twice in five seconds. Next, draw and engage your target twice strong hand only. If all six shots are in the ‘A’ zone, you have graduated level one.

Next move to the 10 yard line (level two) and repeat the same. If all shots are in the ‘A’ zone, you have graduated level two. Keep moving up levels until you shoot outside of the ‘A’ zone.

Sometime, even good shooters will drop out of level one or two. Take your medicine and fail quickly.in other words, get over it. It is a biological requirement for us humans to fail. These failures however, should not be a recurring theme. Learn from the past, prepare for the future and perform in the present.

Patrick McNamara
SGM, US Army (Ret)

Pat McNamara

Patrick McNamara spent twenty-two years in the United States Army in a myriad of special operations units. When he worked in the premier Special Missions Unit, he became an impeccable marksman, shooting with accurate, lethal results and tactical effectiveness. McNamara has trained tactical applications of shooting to people of all levels of marksmanship, from varsity level soldiers, and police officers who work the streets to civilians with little to no time behind the trigger.

His military experience quickly taught him that there is more to tactical marksmanship than merely squeezing the trigger. Utilizing his years of experience, McNamara developed a training methodology that is safe, effective and combat relevant and encourages a continuous thought process. This methodology teaches how to maintain safety at all times and choose targets that force accountability, as well as provides courses covering several categories, including individual, collective, on line and standards.

While serving as his Unit’s Marksmanship NCO, he developed his own marksmanship club with NRA, CMP, and USPSA affiliations. Mac ran monthly IPSC matches and ran semi annual military marksmanship championships to encourage marksmanship fundamentals and competitiveness throughout the Army.He retired from the Army’s premier hostage rescue unit as a Sergeant Major and is the author of T.A.P.S. (Tactical Application of Practical Shooting). He also served as the Principle of TMACS Inc.

Same Message, Different Approach – “Beware The New Media”

February 6th, 2015

Right before SHOT Show we reposted a story giving advice to an industry who was sure to be inundated during SHOT Show by media, particularly new media, wanting free stuff. My motivation is to support industry by making them more savvy toward the approach.

soldiersystems.net/2014/11/13/ask-ssd-redux-should-i-send-a-gear-sample-to-this-person

New media is a term for bloggers, Instagrammers, FaceBookers, forum goers, YouTubers, Twitterers, etc. Basically, anyone who uses social media platforms as media. Some are better than others.

Firelance Media recently attended SHOT Show as a media member and got a bird’s eye view of the shenanigans. His blog post is an entirely different look at the issue. Make sure you read it.

Why You Don’t Deserve That Free Product

It’s a refreshing read and something I could never say in my position. The up and comers in the new media would accuse me of using my influence to block them. No matter how I couched such a story, they’d be right. Many of these blogs and YouTube channels are parasites. They know it, Firelance Media knows it, and I know it.

The article is certain to be popular. Everybody loves a big “fuck you” in their stories. It’s also inspiring. Maybe one day I’ll write that article about people who want to be media and work for brands they promote in their stories. That’s a very disturbing trend amongst the new media.

As for industry. Don’t feed the Bears. If you don’t like what these parasitic new media folks do, don’t encourage them. Ask the hard questions and when they give you answers that don’t add up, tell them to take a hike.
