Kletterworks – They’re Back!

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Long before there was a Mystery Ranch or even a Dana Designs, there was Kletterwerks. Although short lived, it was Dana Gleason’s first pack company. And now, it’s back. At least, after a fashion. Kletterwerks is the baby of the Dana Gleason III, better known as D3. It’s envisioned as an update to the original line but from a lifestyle angle rather than hardcore outdoor. The initial run, already sold out, will premiere in Japan. We can’t wait to see what they’ve cooked up.

Follow them on Facebook to keep abreast of their latest updates.

Blast from the Past – Mystery Cinch

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

We constantly attract new readers at SSD so every once in awhile we go back into the archives and resurrect an old post. When the Mystery Cinch was first released it was shockingly simplistic. Now, it is more poignant than ever since being adopted as part of the USMC FILBE pack. Once you look at this video you will hit yourself in the forehead with your palm and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” In fact, simplicity might be its elegance, but it has garnered Mystery Ranch a patent.

Designed to work with any pack, the Mystery Cinch routes the straps close to the center of of the chest and prevents the straps from creeping up under the arm. Additionally, pack straps don’t adjust tight like they would during normal wear so when released from the Mystery Cinch they fall right off the arm. Its single motion, quick-release design sheds the pack smoothly. Because the Mystery Cinch uses the armor’s PALS grid it offers the flexibility to accommodate a variety of armor vests, pouch configurations, and pack straps.

FILBE on MR NICE Frame

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Unfortunately, the Marines haven’t released any photos of their new issue pack called FILBE. Yes, it’s odd, but so is the whole tale of its adoption. However, what we do have is a photo of the pack on a Mystery Ranch NICE frame rather than the issue Down East 1606 frame. You can clearly see MR’s new Removable Bolster System on the frame and word has it that they had a hand in development of FILBE. Interestingly, the 1606 fame was actually developed for use by the Army’s airborne forces who needed a shorter frame to accommodate the seating on cargo aircraft. The pack sits atop the thighs when rigged paratroopers are seated.

Hopefully, the Marines will display an issue version of the FILBE at this week’s Modern Day Marine.

The Marine Corps has announced the awards for the Family of Load Bearing Equipment (FILBE) pack. As these are to be paid for with 2011 dollars the announcement came none-too-late.
