Safran Optics 1 and affiliate Safran Vectronix are the market leaders for direction finding and laser rangefinding technology. We design and produce a wide range of high performance electro-optical systems such as laser rangefinders, visual augmentation systems, targeting systems, and digital magnetic compasses for military and civil applications. Safran Optics 1 Vector 21, a laser rangefinding binocular, connected to STERNA, a non-magnetic based target acquisition system. These Optics 1 products leverage Ultisense’ premier LRF, DMC and TNF modules.


LRF modules are designed and produced for a wide range of applications. The modules are lightweight and compact, without sacrificing precision range performance – the most important asset when it comes to selecting an LRF module. Our Digital Magnetic Compass (DMC) line of products is highly accurate and reliable OEM solutions which have been installed in over 100,000 opto-electronic devices. Our DMCs are robust, reliable, and can be adapted for almost any application.



Many customers require accurate, non-magnetic northfinding solutions for precision targeting and navigation applications.  Our TNF-Primus is an extremely accurate and reliable autonomous True North Finding module based on advanced Hemispherical Resonator Gyro technology from Safran Electronics and Defense. It delivers high precision azimuth, elevation and bank angles even in magnetically disturbed environments without the need for GNSS. Coupled to a LRF module, it is the ideal solution for far target location.  The TNF-Primus is unrivaled in terms of size, weight, and power consumption when compared to other technologies of comparable accuracy.



Safran Optics 1 is a world leader in the development and production of low Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) visual augmentation systems operating in the LWIR and SWIR bands.  We develop custom camera solutions for a number of customers with unique and challenging requirements which cannot be met by traditional COTS solutions.  For customers facing unique low-SWaP challeneges for LWIR and SWIR cameras, we offer custom solutions leveraging the experience of delivering well over 10,000 low SWaP camera cores.

AUSA 18 – Stalker by Safran Optics 1

In 2016 the Stalker, by Safran Optics 1, was selected as the US Army’s Laser Target Locator Module II and has recently entered production. Safran Optics 1 has a long history of supporting DoD, having delivered over 30,000 handheld laser rangefinders.

The heart of the Stalker is a laser rangefinder with a range of 5,000m on harsh environmental conditions. It also integrates a digital magnetic compass, SASM GPS, 6x Direct View Optic and Low Level Light imager, and LWIR Thermal Imager.

In addition to increased capability, the Stalker offers a 3 lbs, or 40% weight reduction over the LTLM it replaces.

Optics 1, Inc (Safran) I-CUGR Selected for USMC Sniper Range Finder Program

Optics 1, Inc. (Safran) announced today that its Integrated Compact Ultralight Gun-mounted Rangefinder (I-CUGR) has been selected by the United States Marine Corps (USMC).

The I-CUGR is a small, lightweight, and rugged weapon-mounted laser rangefinder with integrated illumination and aiming lasers that will give USMC the ability to quickly range targets without taking hands off their rifles — providing more accurate first round hits.

“We appreciate the opportunity to continue working closely with the U.S. Marine Corps in providing the Marines with superior technology that provides precise and accurate targeting solutions,” said Jose Andrade, Optics 1 Business Development Manager and a retired USMC Sergeant Major. “The selection of the I-CUGR solidifies the confidence in our commitment to providing technologies that are light yet powerful and are critical to the success of the USMC’s mission requirements.”

The I-CUGR has been designed by Optics 1 leveraging proven rangefinder technology from Safran Electronics & Defense. Production will take place in Bedford, New Hampshire at Optics 1. The initial order is for 315 units with deliveries beginning this year.
