SOTech to Unveil New IFAK at SOMA

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

SOTech will unveil their new Flat IFAK the the SOMA Conference (Booth 531) in Tampa, FL this weekend.

SOTech designed their new Flat Individual First-Aid Kit to be less cumbersome when mounted on equipment like belts and armor vests. Many IFAKs stick out from a vest or belt and hang up on vehicle seats, doorways, and other hazards.

The Flat IFAK allows ambidextrous deployment via handles mounted on either side of the insert. Once deployed the envelope-style insert may then be temporarily closed using the cinch string and hung around the neck or stuffed quickly into a cargo pocket, allowing weapons manipulation or to free up the user’s hands for extraction/movement of the patient. This is a great feature since oftentimes, it is difficult to reattach the IFAK insert to equipment for further transport.

The Flat IFAK is approximately the same thickness as SOTech’s VIPER Plate Carrier, allowing it to be mounted to their BLOCS Padded Armor Belt below the plate carrier giving the wearer flat back profile when sitting in a vehicle or a helicopter. It is MOLLE compatible with is outfitted with SOTech’s patented Flex-Tab attachment system. The Flat IFAK is sold as a kit along with the BLOCS Quick Eject Tourniquet Carrier.

SOTech Back in the Mix

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

You may have heard a whisper here, or a rumor there that Special Operations Technologies and their owner Jim Cragg had been debarred from federal contracting. Well, the truth of the matter is that they were on GSA’s Excluded Parties List System which serves as a clearing house for debarred parties but they’re not there anymore.

They were placed on the list on 1 September of this year in a proposed status and removed just over two months later after it was determined by the Army’s Suspension and Debarment Official that they should not be debarred. SOTech’s owner was a federal witnesses against Joseph Marak and somehow was inadvertently placed on the debarment lost along with Marak and the prosecution’s other main witness Skedco. Both Marak and Skedco thus far remain on the list, although, it’s highly unlikely Marak will be removed based on his fraud conviction.

After speaking with the Army’s SDO, we found out it’s not that hard to be placed on the list. It seems, if somebody accuses you of wrongdoing, or just makes a clerical error, the Government places you on the same list as those that have been debarred for cause. You sit in a proposed status during the investigation. Not only are you in the same database as those who are debarred for cause, you can’t compete for Government contracts until they take you off the list. Doesn’t matter how innocent you are, you look guilty. Until the investigation is complete, you look like a crook.

Fortunately for SOTech they only sat in limbo for two months. Now, they are back in the mix.

Look for an article next week where we take a look at how this happened and how the system is flawed to the point that a company must pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees in order to stay in business and clear their name.

In the meantime, check out the Excluded Parties List System for yourself. www.epls.gov

SOTECH Takes a Ride into History

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

20110822-114250.jpg

The photo is a little tongue-in-cheek, but the thought process behind it is a very serious part of SOTECH’s innovation process. As an avid military historian, SOTECH’s CEO Jim Cragg encourages his staff to study weapon development and soldier load carriage throughout history to spur the creative juices in developing SOTECH’s designs for the Future Warrior and Future Enforcer. Pictured above, Jim attends the week long U.S. Cavalry School on the Little Big Horn battlefield. The school teaches riding with period equipment, cavalry tactics, and use of period weapons, as well as a mounted military history staff ride. As one point of interest, in 1876 most troopers of the 7th Cavalry didn’t have a quick-draw ammunition belt, so they put their bullets in piles on the ground, many leaving them behind when ordered to fall back. In a history repeating itself moment, LA Sheriff’s Dept SEB Sniper Cadre approached SOTECH in 2001 asking for an ammunition harness because they had set their rifle ammo on the ground in position and found it cumbersome to police up their rounds and radio when ordered to shift positions. Some things never change. Jim is pictured testing SOTECH’s new VIPER plate carrier system while Lt. W.W. Cook (Ron Glasgow) and a trooper (Gary Newton) are sporting Hellcat kits.

Check out www.USCavarlySchool.com if you are interested in experiencing the way our forefathers fought. The school culminates with a reenactment on the yearly anniversary of Custer’s Last Stand. And yes, Jim was ingloriously scalped by a Native American warrior with a Nerf war club.

S.O.TECH Moves to the Industrial Level and Becomes ISO 9001:2008 Certified

Monday, July 4th, 2011

S.O.TECH is now ISO 9001: 2008 certified in Design and Manufacturing. This accomplishment has enabled their transformation from a mid-sized tactical sewing shop to a fully ISO certified contract manufacturing plant. Simultaneously, they are debuting a new website to streamline this effort, www.SOTECHSewing.com. Additionally, they purchased a new building in order to pursue work with large defense and aerospace manufacturers as well as defense companies in need of custom pouches for their weapons, radios, optics, and flashlights.

For those who don’t know, ISO 9001 is an industry process and quality standard. It is difficult to attain and has to be maintained by a company after an initial inspection and subsequent periodic audits by a registered ISO inspector. Many high quality corporations require an ISO certification from their contractors. S.O.TECH intends to leverage this new ISO certification along with its certification as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) into their expansion. S.O.TECH can currently handle all types of production requirements including Berry Compliant, Buy American Act, Commercial Made in USA, as well as an offshore production capability depending on budget preferences and specifications.

The new website allows customers to go step-by-step through both areas of the Design/Engineering and Production processes. Both customers looking to design a custom rig or to procure samples and quotes in order to bring their established ideas to the market, will find numerous points of helpful information to ease the process. S.O.TECH has even published a tactical sewing term glossary for those that want to brush up on their tactical nylon lingo.

Despite these recent activities, S.O.TECH hasn’t forgotten their core market and continues to maintain their web storefront through www.SOTECHTactical.com. Rather, their latest website is designed to support the corporate customer and present an option for companies looking to procure quality nylon load-bearing cases and harnesses, as well as the inventive individual with the great idea for a new piece of gear.

S.O.TECH wanted us to let let you know that they are standing by for all your custom sewing needs!

FREE Mission Go Bag from SOTech for SOF Personnel!

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Well, it’s not free to you directly from SOTech, but Uncle Sam has already paid for them and they are sitting at Lexington Bluegrass Army Depot (SOFSA) just waiting for your Supply NCO to order them! We were surprised to go out to the field and talk with SOF Operators who want the gear, but have no idea that SOCOM has already purchased it and it collects dust waiting for your unit to get around to ordering it. And it’s not just the SOTech Mission Go Bag, the entire BALCS backpack system is available including packs from Mystery Ranch and Granite Gear Tactical. Who knows what other great gear is waiting for your unit while your supply guy plays World of Warcraft. So if you belong to a SOCOM unit (only), march into your supply office and demand that they order the BALCS SOF Pack Suite Contract # W911QY-07-D-0013, especially the Mission Go Bag NSN: 8465-01-557-1565. It makes a great E&E or just day to day bag. Plus it is pretty versatile and can be mounted/worn 12 different ways. If you want to customize it, SOTech has developed a series of inserts for different mission sets including SERE, Breacher, Sniper, Laptop (RECCE), and Medical.

This is the real deal guys and there’s only one catch. You have to get your supply guy to order them.
