Team Wendy EPIC Air Combat Helmet Liner System

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Team Wendy has introduced their new EPIC Combat Helmet Liner System. It incorporates three main pads (front, rear and crown) for impact protection, an assortment of new ergonomically designed comfort pads and patent-pending Air Channeling technology to keep you cooler. EPIC Air is offered in two styles to fit standard cut as well as high cut helmets. It is compatible with all styles of communications headsets and offered in two sizes.

Don’t forget, the Team Wendy ZAP pads remain the only authorized helmet pads for DoD use. Even though the new EPIC Air Combat Helmet Liner System exceeds standards set forth in blunt impact protection requirements of the Advanced Combat Helmet (AR/PD 10-02) it is not authorized for use.

Team Wendy is well known for their ZAP helmet pads but they have applied their expertise with synthetic compounds to develop training armor plates. Made from a tough Polyurethane, unlike issue ESAPI plates, they won’t crack or break when dropped and mimic the size and weight of the issue item. Both chest and side plate shapes are available.

SLEEK Knee and Elbow Protection System from Team Wendy

Monday, November 16th, 2009

I saw these at AUSA and was pretty impressed. They are unlike anything else currently on the market. Team Wendy’s new SLEEK™ Knee and Elbow Pad System (KEPS) have taken the technology developed for the military issue ZAP helmet pads and applied it to your knees and elbows. The low-profile SLEEK™ system has a non-slip, embossed cap with a distinctive flat center designed to provide grip and stability on any surface, wet or dry. In addition to being grippy, cap also has a digital design and embossed size information to help with purchase. The caps are also secured by continuous, durable stitching that prevents debris from lodging between the cap and the pad.

SLEEK KEPS from Team Wendy

Like all Team Wendy KEPS, the SLEEKâ„¢ system is made with resilient, waterproof, shock-resistant foam that quickly recovers to its original thickness after kneeling and impact. The pads are lined with high-friction Grippiumâ„¢ material, which prevents them from slipping down the arm or leg once strapped in place. SLEEKâ„¢ KEPS are available in Coyote Brown, UCP, Woodland Camo, and Black, and come in sizes Small through X-Large.

With Team Wendy’s SLEEK™ KEPS, you can focus on your mission, not your equipment.

Team Wendy will be exhibiting at the Soldier Equipment and Technology Expo and Conference November 17 – 18 near Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Be sure to visit booth #731 to learn more about SLEEKâ„¢ KEPS and the entire line of Team Wendy products including the issue ZAP helmet pads. Enhanced Protection Individual Comfort

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Team Wendy teased us at both Modern Day Marine and AUSA with their new EPIC technology. They have been keeping it under wraps because it is not yet approved for use by the military. However, Soldier Systems Daily was fortunate enough to be given a sneak peek at the new pad system.

Team Wendy's EPIC

Designed in response to an RFI for enhanced impact protection for the Enhanced Combat Helmet. The current ZAP pad system utilizes 7 pads but the new EPIC system offers 22 pads including a Impact Liner that cradles your noggin and is intended to be permanently attached to the inside of the helmet for enhanced performance. Additionally, there are sizing pads and four oval shaped Ultra Grip TM anti-slip pads to ensure a perfect fit. The comfort pads are provided in four shapes and two thicknesses: 3/16-inch “thin” and 3/8-inch “thick as well as two Sweat Bands (3/16-inch and 3/8-inch thick). The impact liner alone offers the 10 feet per second impact protection required. Testing indicates that the additional fitting pads only enhance the protection afforded to the wearer, up to 40% in hot conditions.

I had the opportunity to try it in an ACH and it definitely offers a great deal of adjustment. When I mounted the Ultra Grip TM pads it was going nowhere on my head. As with the current ZAP pad system, the pads feature wicking and anti-microbial treated fabric.

Team Wendy prepared this video to give you an idea of how the system works.

EPIC is available for sale to Law Enforcement customers but will not be offered to the military until it has been officially tested and approved for use. The ZAP system remains the sole approved helmet pad for use by the US military. We encourage the acquisition to take a serious look at such enhanced technologies as EPIC especially in light of the increased ballistic protection afforded by the developmental Enhanced Combat Helmet.

Portable Seat and Tactical Storage Cover ADS

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The Team Wendy Portable Seat and Tactical Storage Cover is comprised of three components; Tactical Storage Cover with Pouches, a Portable Seat Pad, and Lumbar Cushion. It is modular in design making it easy to install. The Portable Seat Pad has been available for some time and proven quite popular with military and civilians alike. Imagine the same type of padding you enjoy in your helmet pads but in your seat. It works with or without the Lumbar Cushion to accommodate body armor systems. You can see in the photo that it is removable.

Team Wendy Seat Cushion with Removable Lumbar pad

The Tactical Storage Cover folds over to cover both the front and back of the vehicle seat and zippers to the Seat Base. Elastic straps secure the cover around the vehicle seat back and non-slip Grippiumâ„¢ strips help keep the cover in position on the seat frame. While others have produced what are essentially seat covers swathed in PALS webbing, the Team Wendy design is unique. Stout pull handles are attached to the PALS panels which allow them to be “torn away” in an emergency. The PALS panels are attached to the Tactical Storage Cover via a combination of hook and pile tape and snaps in order to keep full panels from sagging during extended operations. In fact, this set up is secure enough to support up to a 50 lbs load in the pouches. What’s more, the tear away panels can be pulled open to reveal small storage cubbies. In addition to large and small utility pouches offered by Team Wendy, any PALS-compatible pouch will fit on the TSC.

The TSC Set includes Tactical Storage Cover with both pouches, Portable Lumbar Pad, and Portable Seat Pad. The entire set is Berry Compliant available in Coyote Brown, Universal Camo, and Black.ADS offers the Portable Seat and Tactical Storage Cover. To order visit www.adsinc.com.

GAO Report on Helmet Pads

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Last week the Government Accounting Office released a report on helmet pads intended as a backgrounder for members of the Senate and House Armed Services and Appropriations Committees. While it was fairly thin, there were a few jewels of information buried in the document’s 12 pages (including covers).

One interesting section covered by our friends at DefenseTech discussed the military’s interest in alternative helmet suspensions and more stringent requirements.

Team Wendy's ZAP Pads

Also of note in the report is the timeline detailing the chain of events that brought us the current pad system. However, most interesting to us were the sections that dealt with the intent of the report which was to determine who currently provides the pads used in Army and Marine Corps ground combat helmets, and how they were chosen. The short answer repeated numerous times was Team Wendy.

To quote the report:
“To date, based on the results of the testing performed, the Army has approved pad systems made by two manufacturers—Team Wendy and Mine Safety Appliances—for use in its Advanced Combat Helmet, while the Marine Corps has chosen to limit its approval to one pad, and has approved only Team Wendy pads for use in its Light Weight Helmet. The approved pads used by the Army and the Marine Corps are consistent with the 2006 U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory testing results in that they showed the best performance relative to the other pads tested.”

However, Ability One (A JWOD service provider) under contract with DoD to provide helmet pads has chosen to only procure the ZAP pad from Team Wendy. Consequently, Team Wendy currently has the only authorized issue pad for the MICH, ACH, and LWH. To confuse matters, several alternative pad systems are available for local purchase as well as on GSA and are manufactured to the Mil Spec for pads. While they do meet shock mitigation standards they are not the issue item and to curb their use, both the Army and Marine Corps have issued directives for troops to inspect their equipment and replace unauthorized pads.
