Kitanica Jackets

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

Every once in awhile we like to show something kind of high end. Kitanica’s jackets aren’t military but have features found in many tactical clothing products. In fact, the company name is derived from the word Chitin (prounced Kai•tin), which is the structural component of insect exoskeletons.

Mythbusters fans will recognize the Kitanica brand, not necessarily by name but by sight. Host Adam Savage wore one of the coats that looks like a cross between a motor cycle jacket and a flight jacket out of a sci fi movie. In fact, Adam’s use of the jacket on the show led to the resurgence of the brand which had gone into hiatus while owner Beej Cronin pursued a career in teaching. Interest became so great that Beej started the company back up along with brother Chris and their cousin Len Riccio.

Kitanica Mark I Jacket

Built from 1000D cordura the Mk I is going to last a lifetime. The unique design features eight pockets, PALS webbing and a universal hands free flashlight shoulder mount. There is also a drag strap integrated behind teh wide collar which can be folded up to protect the neck.

Kitanica backs their 100% American made jackets with a lifetime guarantee against material and manufacturing defects as well as a money back guarantee if you are dissatisfied with your purchase. Kitanica also offers discounts to Military, LE and teachers.

Down Range Gear NOD Retention Devices

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Down Range Gear has introduced two new NOD retention devices to augment their original design. Both are designed to retain and prevent the loss of a helmet mounted NOD but offer slightly different features.

With the ver 2 design a female side release buckle is pinned between the NOD plate and the helmet to form a sturdy socket that will remain on the helmet. The male end of the buckle is tethered to the NOD body via tension adjustable shock cord.

This system can also be upgraded with an improved dummy cord, snapping a female side release buckle onto a PALS loop to secure the NOD while stored.

Down Range Gear ver 2 NOD Lanyard MOLLE Attachment

The ver 3 is a streamlined design and features a male side release buckle that is anchored to the helmet under the NOD plate and tethered to length/tension adjustable shock cord. A short length of webbing keeps the female buckle secured to the device.

Optional steel cable ties are available for environmental extremes that require more than plastic and both versions are available in Coyote Tan and Foliage Green from www.downrangegear.com.

ICE Bivy

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Integrated Combat Equipment of Canada is releasing a limited run of Multicam Bivy Bags using Gore-tex 3 layer fabric left over from a design project for a large US supplier. Future Multicam Bivy production will utilize a 3 layer Stedair fabric from Duro. Additionally, they will have a coated nylon floor to help control costs.

ice_bivy

The ICE bivy is generously cut (90” Long x 34” Wide (Flat) at shoulders). Made entirely from 3 Layer Gore-Tex the bivy is fully seam sealed. The 36” side zipper also features a flap. There is also an 8” overlap at face opening which has a wire stiffened hood. Finally, tie-out loops at head, hood, and foot complete the design.

The bivy comes standard with a stuff sack and at $185.00 US, this is a phenomenal price for a 100% Gore bivy, especially in Multicam. If you feel the price is high consider what one of my readers said elsewhere, “That price is cheap compared to a few cold and wet nights out in the woods. Think about how much you spend on motels “. Also upon reflection the Editor said that he recalls purchasing a Woodland 100% Gore-tex bivy in 1987 for about the same price! We could call this a “Deal of the Week” but it’s really more like a “Steal of the Week”.

Available in Multicam, Army UCP, and Woodland MARPAT. We have verified that there are Multicam bivies currently in stock but there will be a two week wait for UCP and MARPAT. If you want to secure a 100% Gore-tex bag you need to jump on this offer quickly.
