What’s Next from Salomon?

Monday, January 31st, 2011

About two years ago, Salomon introduced the Quest 4D in Grey to a couple of specialized military units. Uber Group, US reps for Salomon took a look at Salomon’s international offerings and came up with the Cosmic in Grey, bringing it right into the US market.

The boots are somewhat similar so the bottom line is; the Quest is sewn construction and the Cosmic is glued. While both integrate running shoe technology, think of the Cosmic as the next step based on construction. In the photo above, you can see the Cosmic in the foreground and the Quest peaking from the back.

Now, this last bit is cool as hell. Rumor has it that the Cosmic is vegan. Now how awesome would it be to know that you are being environmentally and socially conscious while you are hunting down Islamo-fascist terrorists? I mean, you would totally score with the chicks if you let slip “Well sure I terminate with extreme prejudice, but I wear vegan footwear while doing it.”

Available VERY soon from purveyors of fine tactical equipment.

Some Background on the SD Padres Military Program

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Folks often want to know what or more accurately, who is behind the San Diego Padre’s support of the military. For the last 15 years, that could be answered with a name; Jack Ensch.

Jack Ensch is the real deal. As a Navy Lieutenant he was held as a POW by the North Viet Namese. In fact, he is listed by the POW Network as a bonafide POW which verifies the stories of POWs and outs fakes.

But I digress. In an article by Bill Center of San Diego’s UNION-TRIBUNE, he explains how “Captain Jack” as he is affectionately known is retiring from his position as the Padres’ Director of Military Affairs.

“I’ve always looked at this position as being an ambassador from the Padres to the military and from the military to the Padres,” Ensch said last week. “I’m not sure who I was working for hardest.”

“We were military before military was cool,” Ensch said. “I love it when people on the outside refer to the Padres as ‘the team of the military.’ ”

The new camouflaged Padres jerseys we wrote about last week are the latest in a series first introduced by Ensch in 2000. According to the UNION-TRIBUNE article, “Other Ensch innovations are Military Opening Day and the Sunday home salutes to the military that includes hosting Marines from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Camp Pendleton.”

“They make sacrifices for us; we should make sacrifices for them,” he said. “I hope the Padres never view the military just as a revenue stream. Our programs were always designed to honor, respect and support military service with no strings attached.
“Revenue generation should be merely a secondary result of the first.”

Ultimate Survival Technologies Sells Commercial/Recreation Division

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

If you’ve been around the trade show circuit for any amount of time, you’ve probably seen Ultimate Survival Technologies and their line of cool survival gadgets and armor systems. There are a few other pieces going on there but they generally keep that stuff behind closed doors.

Last week they announced: “Ultimate Survival Technologies (UST) of Monroe, Washington, has just announced the sale of its Recreation/Commercial Division to Revere Supply Co, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida. The acquisition of the division will give UST the opportunity to solely focus on their military and law enforcement sales channels, with capital to expand current research and development initiatives in body armor, CBRNE defense, tactical gear and mobility systems.”

Awesome for them and awesome for Revere Supply as the products they purchased the rights to are well, pretty righteous. They include their patented all-weather fire starting systems, targetable and unbreakable signal mirrors, a premium outdoor saw, a low profile whistle, an ultralight emergency stove, and kits in which the tools are combined. Interestingly, UST will retains the sale of these products to the military so the Revere sale is purely for the commercial market.

Naturally, those involved in the deal made a few statements.

“We are very excited about what this means for our customers,” said Chris Venti, President and CEO of UST. “Revere is a well-established company with a great track record for customer service and a vast history in the survival and recreation industries. This transition will put us in an even stronger position to continue to innovate for and focus on our military and government customers.”

Revere President Andrew Kaufmann said this about the purchase: “Revere is focused on growing our business in the outdoor, aviation and leisure marine markets. We see the purchase of UST’s Recreational Division as a key acquisition that will help us to achieve this goal.”
