Lockable DAGR Mount

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Our friends at Supply Captain are showing a really cool lockable DAGR mount. This is an indispensable idea as the DAGR GPS device is highly pilferable, especially when vehicles are left unattended like during visits to neighboring FOBs.

Announcing TacticalFanboy.com

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

We’ve been working on this for awhile now; the launch of our new little brother site, TacticalFanboy.com. Awhile back we realized that as our readership grew, so did their interests begin to vary and in response, our editorial content began to shift somewhat as well. Ever conscious of our core readership, that is Industry, Government, and Military, we became a bit concerned that we had lost some of our focus on that group. And in that notion, the idea for Tactical Fanboy was born. Think of it as sort of an alter ego. Over the past few months TFB’s fan base has grown and grown. In fact, some of our most popular stories have been from TFB.

Now, we can have our cake and eat it too and so can you. SSD at work and TFB at home. SSD will go back to its roots and concentrate on hard core Government and Industry news while TFB will pick up the more recreational and entertainment sides of this community with a little bit of humor and risque content thrown in for good measure. While this may mean no more worries about running across content on SSD that may be questionable at work don’t just write TFB off as some milsim wannabe site. The name might be lighthearted but the content will always be on point. Additionally, TFB will be more of a traditional blog so feel free to comment and join in the discussion. But don’t worry, you’ll see us share content and collaborate regularly.

We hope you are as excited about this as we are. Please join TFB at www.TacticalFanBoy.com and look for TFB himself at SHOT Show.

An Arc’Teryx Rigger’s Belt?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

You betcha. The new LEAF H150 Rigger’s Belt was premiered today at a Pre-SHOT Show event. The project actually goes back several years and finds its genesis in field expediency. Operators were purchasing the X350 Arc’teryx climbing harness and cutting the leg straps off to form a lightweight, formfitting gun belt. Some thought that since it was a climbing harness it would also suffice for use as a rigger’s belt. The harness is designed to work as a whole so unfortunately, when you alter the harness by removing the leg straps you shortchange your level of protection. Ever dedicated to the elite, whether athlete or military, Arc’teryx began work to engineer a dedicated rigger’s belt and the result is now available. Oddly enough, Arc’teryx itself started out with just climbing harnesses before becoming the outdoor titan of today. Obviously, they know a thing or two about the subject.

The H150 is touted as a “state-of-the-art gunner’s belt” and we couldn’t agree more. Like we said, they have been working on this for awhile and have invested heavily in producing an in-house test apparatus as well as certifications from outside labs. In fact, if you have a keen eye, you may have seen an early prototype in some of our photos here on SSD in the past.

Built with Arc’teryx’s Warp Strength® Technology (WST®), the hyper-light and improbably thin swami belt technology used in the construction of the company’s iconic climbing harnesses, the new Rigger’s Belt improves on the overall safety, comfort and performance of a traditional gunners belt. Warp Strength® Technology uniformly spreads the load across the entire belt, equally distributing weight and pressure from edge to edge, yet is stiff vertically to support holsters, sub-loads and pouches. The Rigger’s Belt is certified as a “belt for travel restraint” under the EN 358 Standard.

Combining WSTâ„¢ with a forged 7075 T6 aluminum anodized Self locking buckle results in a belt that is a scant 150 grams / 5.3 oz (size Med). The H150 is sized XS – XXL and available in Black, Crocodile, and MultiCam.

Additionally, LEAF will be unveiling the Wraith; their new overwhite solution. Consisting of four pieces, Wraith includes ultra lightweight, compressible tops and bottoms in White and Crocodile. The idea is to offer options so that the Operator can choose which garment to wear based on the environment so, a Crocodile top can be combined with a White bottom in the Alpine zone where Evergreens are present.

H&K MR556A1 Now Shipping

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

In addition to the MR556A1 finally shipping here in the US, they have made a couple of additional changes hence the A1 designation. These are in addition to the captive detent take down pins we wrote about during last year’s SHOT Show. As you will remember, these have to be depressed with a tool but help tighten the fit between the upper and lower receivers.

The first improvement is that the rifle can now be placed on safe even if the hammer has fallen. Thanks to a requirement from the German Army, H&K has rectified what we feel is a weakness of the AR-style weapon. You can now move the selector lever no matter if the weapon is cocked or not.

Additionally, they have made some adjustments to improve the fit of the collapsible stock so that it does not move or rattle. This is in the same vein as the take down pins.

Finally, the charging handle is now ambidextrous and can be reconfigured for use as a righty or a lefty. It is not set up for both, so you have to choose. The upper receiver has a groove on both sides to accommodate locking the charging handle.

Prices are somewhere just below $3000 but H&K reps promised uppers as well as full guns.

SSD Exclusive – ZERO POINT is on a TiRAID

Monday, January 17th, 2011

When the need to access or open something exists and carrying a halligan tool is either impractical or just too much and a big screwdriver just won’t get it done, what do you use?

Well, the team at Zero Point asked themselves that very question. The tool that they came up with is the first joint effort between the guys with the operational experience and Zero Point’s newly established World-Class Engineering Team.

Not one to back down from a challenge, the engineers took what began as grey matter concept and a few basic sketches turning them into a well designed, highly functional tool in less than two months. Better yet, it’s made from titanium!

Enter the TiRAID (Titanium Replaceable Assault Implement Demolition)

As the name implies, the operator will have the ability to attach different options based on the assessed target as well as his particular style. The striking heads are available in either stainless steel for increased striking momentum and a finer cutting edge OR titanium for lighter weight and absolute corrosion resistance.

Striking Heads Include: Talon, Hawk, Bludgeon, Ax, and Hammerhead

As if producing the TiRAID in short-order wasn’t enough, Zero Point’s engineering team was also tasked to design and manufacture a ground breaking, 12 gauge IED disruptor, also out of titanium and within that same two month window, of course. naturally, they succeeded.

ADS carries the complete line of all Zero Point products. To see both tools visit ADS’s booth (#20415) while at Shot Show.
