Mil-Spec Monkey Releases 5-01-11 Patch

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

According to the Monkey himself, “Symbolism wise there are the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and PA Keystone in the middle to represent the Flight 93 crash site. Geronimo was the code name for Bin Laden.” We agree with MSM that this is a classy design and is understated enough that you can wear it with pride and there won’t be any blood and gore in everyone’s face.

Tac Apps – CamoScience Begets Special Operations Apps

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

The CamoScienceâ„¢ App from MW Research and Development, Inc has spurred the launch of a new company; Special Operations Apps. Their mandate is to “design and field applications specifically for warfighter mobile devices, touchscreens, laptops, and smartphones.” This includes Android and iOS.

“Special Operations Apps uses common platforms, like the Apple or Android systems, to integrate different hardware and equipment and centralize them into common, familiar, smart devices that the operators already know or own,” said K. Dominic Cincotti, who founded MW Research and Development, Inc and also serves president of Special Operations Apps.

“So we lighten the operator’s load and provide more real-time data, improved capabilities, and more effective targeting — taking full advantage of cutting-edge commercial devices without the need for budgeting and developing new and expensive devices and platforms that only serve one function,” he said. “We get more powerful devices at lower costs and without the need to re-invent the wheel.”

As an aside, Cincotti’s father is the late COL Joseph G. Cincotti (USA), the original ground-force commander of Blue Light. If you don’t know your history, do some research on Blue Light.

For the new company, Cathlena Spencer, who the led the commercial-application team for CamoScienceâ„¢ has been named Chief Technology Officer of Special Operations Apps. Mark Tocci, a former Ranger and patent-pending inventor, will serve as Vice President of Business Development. David Mullins, a former Special Forces operator, will lead in-house subject matter experts. I served with Dave and he is a great guy. In fact, his wife encouraged me to earn my degree when she worked at the Smoke Bomb Hill ed center.

Special Operations Apps is based in Wilmington, NC, strategically located between Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune, and convenient to Virginia Beach, VA.

With both the Army and USASOC hell bent for leather to field Android devices to their troops maybe we can get Special Operations Apps to develop an Android app for us. If you need some work done, they have let us know that requests for new apps should contact them via 650-209-0762.

Warrior Expo West Wrap Up

Friday, May 20th, 2011

This year’s Warrior Expo West in San Diego was even better than last year. Once again participants came from bases around the Pacific Rim as well as the Western US in order to see the latest in equipment and services from a variety of providers. Attendance was much larger than last year and the number of vendors was also larger making for a great atmosphere.

Now that Expos are offered on both coasts they have become even more accessible. As travel funds become more constrained it’s great to be able to stay a bit closer to home. This also helps to mitigate travel time. Depending on where you are coming from, you can easily spend two travel days. Since both shows are in locations with a large military presence the venues offer billeting for personnel on travel orders as well as local economies that are military friendly.

In addition to the equipment you would generally expect to see at a show like this, there were also vendors specializing in dive equipment and boats, EOD tools, tentage and other expeditionary gear as well as a full section of MRO products including all terrain vehicles and the ADS MRO truck. Look for a few more articles over the next few weeks discussing some of these capabilities.

For those of you who missed Warrior Expo West, be sure to register for Warrior Expo East in Virginia Beach, VA, July 14 & 15. Not only will you get to interact directly with manufacturer reps, but also observe hands on demonstrations, participate in breakout sessions and listen to key note speaker GEN Stanley McChrystal.

New Reticle Options for the Meprolight M21 Combat Sight

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Meprolight’s M21 reflex sight is imported from Israel by The Mako Group. It is a self-illuminated reflex sight powered by tritium and a fiber optic collector system. While it is the standard issue combat sight for the Israeli Defense Forces, they feel it is also a great option for Law Enforcement duties. One of the biggest advantages of the M21 is that it requires no batteries and has no switches to break. This means that it can be mounted to a rifle and there is no chance of encountering a dead battery when you need it most.

In addition to the cost savings associated with batteries, there is another advantage. Mako has worked with Mepro to introduce new reticle options. The standard reticle for the US market has been the bullseye reticle, but they have now added the Triangle reticle, Open X reticle, and both 4.3 MOA and 5.5 MOA Dot reticles.

“The non-electronic Mepro M21 sight with bullseye reticle has proven immensely popular with law enforcement agencies who need a rugged sight that can withstand rough rides and extreme temperatures in the trunk of a patrol car, and is always ready for instant use without worry about dead or leaking batteries,” Addy Sandler, CEO of The Mako Group explained. “Now these agencies have the option of choosing the precise triangle and dot reticles to fit any intended use.”

For more information about the Mepro M21 Self-Powered Reflex Sight and the new reticle options, visit www.themakogroup.com.

Kelty MAP 3500 MultiCam Available for Preorder

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Almost a decade ago, the Special Operations (SOF) community requested a new and improved assault pack prompting Amron International to approach pack manufacturer Kelty. Designed and engineered with the help of direct military end-user input and feedback, the MAP 3500 was born becoming a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution for a sturdy and functional Military Assault Pack (MAP).

Based on customer feedback Amron is introducing the popular MAP3500 in MultiCam® to accompany the six standard solid colors (Anaconda Green, Black, Coyote Tan, Desert Tan, Foliage Green, and Ocean Grey). Preorders are being accepted now with deliveries beginning in August 2011.

I can tell you that I purchased mine in 2002 and used it for many years as a my day to day pack. In fact, it was later passed down to one of my kids and has been used for a wide variety of duties. It’s still a great pack to this day despite a little wear and tear around the edges. It will serve you for years to come.

To Preorder the new MultiCam® pack for only $119.95 with free UPS ground freight within the continental US from now through 31 July at tactical.amronintl.com. Regular price is $159.00.
