Why Aren’t There Berry Compliant Running Shoes?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

A recent editorial in the Coastal Maine’s “The Times Record” makes the case that the Berry Amendment is an important, valid rule for procuring Soldier equipment. But the author brings up an interesting pint which is that there is currently a Berry waiver for athletic footwear. Fortunately, Sen Susan Collins, (R-Maine) along with other Congressional members are asking DoD why.

According to the editorial, the Pentagon is hiding behind the contention that one shoe will not do it all. Hopefully, this isn’t their real fall back position as they don’t rely on one boot to do it all. Why would they expect one running shoe to be all things to all service members?

Apparently, Senator Collins was satisfied with this answer either so she inserted language into the Fiscal Year 2012 National Defense Authorization bill requiring them to provide the proof that there are no American made athletic shoes that fit the bill.

Lest we forget to mention New Balance happens to make running shoes right here in the US of A.

Ultralife to Pay $2.7 Million for False Pricing Information Provided to US Army

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

The Department of Justice recently announced that Ultralife Corporation has agreed to pay $2.7 million to resolve allegations that the battery manufacturer violated the False Claims Act.

In an investigation conducted by the Defense Contract Audit Agency, the DCIS, and the US Army Criminal Investigation Command it was found that Ultralife employees knowingly provided failed to provide current, accurate and complete cost and pricing data related to three contracts with the US Army to provide Ultralife’s lithium-manganese dioxide non-rechargeable batteries that are used in a variety of military applications. They gave government contracting personnel with false certifications concerning the company’s cost and pricing information, which was not current, accurate and complete as required by law. As a result of the defective price disclosures, the Army paid inflated prices for the batteries it purchased.

“Contractors who improperly pass inflated costs on to the American taxpayers undermine the public’s trust,” said Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “This case demonstrates the Justice Department’s commitment to holding accountable contractors who attempt to overcharge the government for purchases.”

“Those who work for the government as contractors have a duty of honesty to the American taxpayers, said US Attorney for the Western District of New York William J. Hochul Jr. “We will continue to use the False Claims Act and all other civil legal tools at our disposal to address contractors that seek to avoid their disclosure obligations when selling products to the United States government.”

“The American taxpayer expects the Department of Defense and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service to be champions of fiscal accountability and acquisition integrity,” said Edward T. Bradley, Special Agent in Charge, Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Northeast Field Office. “Today’s settlement is evidence of the commitment of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service to vigorously investigate procurement fraud allegations.”

The Future of QR Codes?

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

We’ve introduced you to Quick Response (QR) codes in the past. Sure, they’re cool, but pretty generic. That is, until now.

FaceBook user Stevewebstlouis created this variation on a theme for Triple Aught Design. Not only are the colors tacticool but it is customized with special design elements. Best of all, it works. Get your QR code at qrcode.kaywa.com. But, you’ll have to find somebody to customize it.

ADS Takes It to the Troops ADS

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

In addition to the East and West Warrior Expos ADS is known for their base level shows. However, this year they have done something completely new. Twice now ADS has taken their thing on the road and gone directly to the troops in Afghanistan.

First, with Operation Lombardi, ADS sponsored a get together in celebration of Super Bowl XLV. Then, over Memorial Day weekend ADS held their first Warrior Expo Afghanistan on Camp Vance, Bagram AFB. This two day vendor show was host to several hundred Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, and Navy. Both of these events were phenomenal for the vendors involved as they were able to interact directly with deployed forces.
