Tell Us Why You Chose Your Career and You Could Win a KCRF Patch

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Recently, a US Army Drill Sergeant shared this beauty written by a new recruit when queried on his motives for joining Big Green.

Some have said this is the worst reason ever to join the Army but they are just out of touch. These detractors have obviously never spent any time around Group back in the ’80s. There were loads of Tolkien reading, DnD playing, sword forging dudes in SF back then.

WTF LOTR

What’s your story? Tell us why you chose your career/job. We’ll choose our 9 favorites and award them with their very own Limited Edition ‘Keep Calm Return Fire’ patch made famous during SHOT Show 2013. Why award 9 patches, you might ask? Well that’s easy. In honor of the raw recruit’s LOTR reference we will give away 9 KCRF patches, one for each member of the Fellowship of the Ring.

Abbate Convicted of 1 Count of Child Molestation, Acquitted of 23 Others

Friday, February 8th, 2013

I was looking over my web stats last night and I noticed a lot of visits to a story on former GLOCK shooting coach William Abbate. He was arrested in 2011 for “child molestation, aggravated child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, sexual exploitation of children and statutory rape.” After a couple of delays he was tried in Henry County, Georgia.

After two days of deliberation, a jury convicted him of a single count of child molestation. Specifically, that count surrounded an assertion that he provided a sex toy to a minor. According to the Henry Herald, Billy Abbate will be sentenced February 15 and faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

This isn’t over yet, while Abbate may been found not guilty of the vast majority of the charges in Georgia, he still faces similar charges in the victim’s home state of Virginia. What will happen there remains to be seen.

BSA Selects Osprey to Provide Duffels to Jamboree Participants

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

20130207-103943.jpg

The Boy Scouts of America announced that 2013 Jamboree participants will be using this duffel from Osprey called the Osprey Transporter BSA. National Scout Jamborees are held every four years and this is the first at the new Summit Bechtel Reserve after 30 years at Fort AP Hill in Virginia. In addition to this new high adventure location, this Jamboree marks a departure from previous events. Beginning this year, tentage and other camp supplies will be provided by Bechtel so that local councils will not be required to acquire and transport equipment specifically for the Jamboree. In an effort to help control transportation costs and the amount of space each camper will use while at Jamboree, BSA is limiting each participant to the use of one of these issue duffel bags. But don’t worry, at 7015 cu in (115 liters), there’s plenty of room for a Scout’s clothing and gear. In addition to haul loops, the Transporter also incorporates stow able shoulder straps. These are awesome bags and I often use smaller version as a carry-on for short trips. No word yet if the BSA model will be available for purchase by those not attending the 2013 National Scout Jamboree. The Jamboree gear transport concept is excellent is and Osprey is a great partner for BSA.
