ATF Determines AR-15 Pistol With Stabilizing Brace Can Not Be Classified As An SBR

ATF FTB SB15

In a reply to an inquiry made by a Law Enforcement Officer, the ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch determined that an AR-15 style pistol fired from the shoulder when equipped with an accessory such as the SIG Sauer SB15 Pistol Stabilizing Brace would not cause the pistol to be reclassified as an SBR. It has been previously determined through FTB # 99146 that placing a receiver extension of an AR-15 style pistol on the user’s shoulder does not change the classification of the weapon. Additionally, certain accessories such as the SB15 Pistol Stability Brace aren’t classified as shoulder stocks, and as such even improper use doesn’t constitute a design change. The FTB does note, however, that they can’t recommend using a weapon or weapon accessory in a manner not intended by the manufacturer.

Although decisions can be reversed at any time, this response is clearly in line with the SB15 Pistol Stabilizing Brace as being “ATF Approved” prior to its sale.

Private Bloggins – Cobra vs. Raptor – Head to Head

Friday, April 4th, 2014

A while back, CTOMS, through their Private Bloggins site, posted an article featuring self testing of the Raptor buckle in order to determine if it was a suitable replacement for the AustriAplin Cobra buckles in use on their X-belts and M-harnesses.

Recently, they’ve written a follow up to that original round of testing. This time, instead of conducting their own comparative testing, they posted the results of a study conducted by independent testing company TÜV SÜD at the request of AustriAlpin. AustriAlpin supplied 5 Cobra and Raptor buckles of each size for evaluation; the Raptor buckles were sourced by 3rd parties from online suppliers of the buckles.

Through the testing results, it was determined that Raptor Buckles bend and brake consistently below the direct pull stamped rating. Those interested in viewing TÜV SÜD’s test results can view them by clicking the image below:

Blast from the Past – Battlefield Airmen on the Job

Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

Why? Because I just like this post from March, 2011 is why.

We like seeing official Air Force photos of Battlefield Airmen applying airmanship to the tasks at hand. In this case we see U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Stacy Maxey, a command air mobility liaison officer with Task Force CROM, giving a landing zone safety officer course U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and Romanian army personnel at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Lagman, Afghanistan.

You will note the combination of AF Digital Tigerstripe, Army UCP and Army OCP (MultiCam) clothing and equipment on the Airmen in the photo. Expect this to be the norm for at least the near future as deploying Airmen transition to OCP.

SOWW – Takin Bacon 2014

Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

Special Operations Wounded Warriors (SOWW) had its 3rd annual event Takin Bacon 2014 several weeks ago at an Undisclosed location in North Carolina. The Reaper Outdoors Team led by SEAL Master chief Ron “Reaper-01” Bellan covered the event and filmed the event for the hit TV show ‘Survive the Hunt’.

Hunt 1

SOWW brought in 13 SOF heroes including SEAL (ret.) Jason Redman, Wounded Wear. Each of the SOF hunters were issued a Mil-Tac knife to take down their wild hog. The SOF hunters were broken down into hunting parties that were lead by local guides equipped with teams of dogs to track down the hogs. Its difficult to figure out who is having a better time, the dogs or the hunters. The hunt is filled with exhilarating moments. When the dogs begin to bay a pig its an all out sprint through brush, swamp, mud, water, and briars to get to the cornered pig. Once the handler lets go of the catch dog its time for the hunter to use his Mil-tac knife for its expressed purpose. Its truly an up close and personal hunting experience.

Hunt 2

The weekend is not only about tracking and taking down hogs. SOWW provides the SOF hunters with tons of excellent sponsored gear. More importantly though, its about the fellowship and camaraderie around the camp fires at night. It’s a truly unique experience that fosters brotherhood and healing.

SOWW is a 501c3 organization that gets wounded SOF back in the woods, on family retreats, fishing and hunting trips throughout the USA. If you want to support and learn more, please go to www.sowwcharity.com.
