Seeking AF Tattoo Policy Expertise

Monday, August 18th, 2014

We’ve got an Air Force reader with a problem. He’s a hard charging Airman that has a pretty extensive tattoo collection. He’s being told that if he doesn’t have his ink removed, he’ll be denied reenlistment, have his ALS date cancelled, meal card stamped “no dessert”, etc.

Do any SSD readers have any insight into tattoo waivers for serving Airmen (of any rank)?

BLACKHAWK! Retakes Control Of Facebook Page

Monday, August 18th, 2014

Although the URL remains httpswww.facebook.com/girlswithguns18, late last night BLACKHAWK! Worked with FaceBook to regain control of their Facebook page. It was hacked yesterday and spammed thoroughly with NSFW images of women with guns. We are still insure who accomplished the hack but a similar act was recently committed against sister brand Bushnell. In recognition of the situation, BLACKHAWK! made this simple post.

Unfortunately, this hacking event cost BLACKHAWK! followers on Facebook which is now a rather expensive issue considering the spate of service changes at Facebook that have severely throttled the reach of business pages to their followers.

VSSL Outdoor Utility Tools

With the adoption of LEDs, the traditional battery-and-bulb flashlight became largely obsolete, as LEDs are capable of producing light with reduced power requirements. VSSL Outdoor Utility Tools were created to utilize the form factor of these traditional flashlights by using a small form LED light and converting the extra handle space into storage for outdoor and survival gear.

Made from MilSpec 6061 seamless extruded aluminum, the VSSL is a waterproof 8″ x 2″ tube which comes standard with a dual mode LED flashlight and an oil filled compass. VSSLs are currently being offered in three configurations: Supplies, First Aid, and Shelter, which feature pre-packaged components. The Supplies configuration, for example, includes the following items, stored in tins specifically designed to fit in the VSSL:

• 4 hour pure Canadian beeswax candle

• Razor blade

• 6 Aquatabs® water purification tablets

• Wire saw (high tensile, 60lb working strength with handle straps)

• Aluminum beadless emergency whistle

• Waterproof matches

• Tinder Quik® fire starters

• Fishing Gear

• Signalling Mirror

• Kevlar® rope (150lb breaking strength)

• Reflective trail markers

• P38 military GI Type can opener

• First aid supplies

Made and assembled in Canada, using components from Ireland, India, USA, China, Mexico and Canada. Currently available for pre-order, with an expected ship date sometime in Fall 2014. If you’re interested in picking up one for yourself, they currently have promo code PREORDER20, which will save you 20% off your order.

What The Heck Is Going On With Blackhawk!’s Facebook Page?

Monday, August 18th, 2014

UPDATE: Not too long after this article was published, Blackhawk! regained control of their Facebook page and has issued the following statement:

Friends and Fans of BLACKHAWK!: earlier this week our page was hacked. We apologize for the inappropriate content that was posted to our page and may have appeared in your news feed. We have regained control now. Please know we’re working with Facebook to clean it up and take the necessary steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Thank you for your continued support. Please help us spread the word.

Blackhawk! WTF 1

For roughly the past 12 hours, the official Blackhawk! Facebook page has been posting nothing but pictures of women posing with guns and other unrelated links. If you go through their post history, you’ll find that the last legitimate post was August 5th, after which there’s a huge dead zone until today’s shenanigans started. Interestingly enough, the current URL for the page is www.facebook.com/girlswithguns18.

What’s going on over there? Our money’s on a hacker, and that seems to be the general consensus in the comments. Here’s to hoping that Blackhawk! will take control of the situation soon.

You can check out the madness for yourself here, but be warned it’s a bit NSFW: Blackhawk! Facebook page.

UPDATED – Somebody Isn’t Reading SSD

Monday, August 18th, 2014

These are actual photos of equipment used by troops recently attending a qualification range.

The photo was shared with SSD by a trainer who had this to say:

Joe is going to do dumb shit if you let him. He also doesn’t know better half the time. All of these are examples of why it’s important to perform equipment maintenance, invest in quality gear that will stand up to sustained use, and educate the shooter on how to properly set up their individual equipment.”

Fortunately, SSD readers are a switched on bunch. Don’t let your buddies do stuff like this.

Update – that’s right, it’s a reflective belt sling. These are real.
