Magpul – PMAG 30 AK/AKM MOE And PMAG 30 AK/AKM GEN M3 Comparison

Thursday, November 5th, 2015

In Packaging

Earlier this week, we received a new PMAG 30 AK/AKM GEN M3 from Magpul, which prompted us to pull out one of the original PMAG 30 AK/AKM MOE magazines and take a look at the differences.

The major change to the GEN M3 mag is the addition of the Stainless steel rear locking lug and steel-reinforced front lug and spine, compared to the original 30 AK MOE mag which features all polymer construction. As you can imagine, this adds a noticeable bit of weight to the magazine; the Magpul site lists the weight of the GEN M3 at 7.2 oz., and the MOE at 6.5 oz.

The patterning on the polymer body between the magazines is virtually identical, however, and they also both have the same constant curve internal geometry, stainless steel spring, paint pen dot matrix panels, and flared floorplate.

The other major noticable difference is the MOE mag has a reddish-brown follower, while the GEN M3 mag has a bright orange follower. Take note that in every image where both magazines are present, the PMAG 30 AK/AKM MOE is on the left, and the PMAG 30 AK/AKM GEN M3 is on the right.

UPDATED – Major International EOTech Distributor Ends Relationship

Thursday, November 5th, 2015

As you may recall, we recently published an article regarding L3 Communications’ EOTech sights. In that article we shared L3’s SEC filings, changes in their user manuals and a USSOCOM Safety of Use Message which mentions Point of Impact shifts in both the low and high temperature ranges of EOTech holographic sights issued to the government.

But apparently, issues surrounding the sights have been brewing since at least Spring. In a recent memorandum to customers obtained by SSD, distributor Elite Defense discloses that EOTech has not been delivering product since April of this year.  It’s our understanding that Elite Defense is the single largest distributor of EOTech sights with extensive international sales of the brand.  Even more interesting than the secession of deliveries, is that Elite Defense has chosen to terminate their long distributorship.  Unfortunately, it seems EOTech has not acknowledged this action, nor Elite Defense’s proposal to convert their customer base to direct sales with EOTech.  It’s like they’ve gone radio silent.

Elite Defense Customer Letter EOTech

When queried, Elite Defense offered no comment regarding the memorandum other than to ask where we obtained it. That, we’re keeping to ourselves.

UPDATE – We just received this message from Elite Defense:

When Elite Defense released the letter to our international customers on 11/3/15 (published by SSD 11/5/15), we had not received any formal contact from EOTech about the termination of the relationship or our proposed transition plan. However, on the afternoon of November 4, EOTech reached out to Elite Defense. Elite Defense and EOTech are now working together to develop a plan that will focus on what is most important: a smooth transition for our customers.

NEWINGTON, N.H. (November 5, 2015) — SIG SAUER, Inc., has returned the venerable P225 pistol to its catalog and is now shipping the classic handgun to dealers and distributors.

The P225-A1 retains the exceptional look and feel of the original P225, but features an enhanced trigger and the precision manufacturing and quality from the state-of-the-art SIG SAUER facility.

“We set out to re-create the fantastic ergonomics of the P225, but we also wanted to make the best P225 ever built,” said John Brasseur, Director of Product Management for SIG SAUER, Inc. “While the original West German P225 was a fantastic pistol, the degree of precision and accuracy we can obtain now makes this the ultimate expression of the P225.”

The P225-A1 is a single-stack 9mm pistol with the time-tested double-action/single-action trigger system. A fully machined stainless steel slide is finished in the durable Nitron finish. A hard coat anodized frame sports two-piece grips with the SIG mark medallion.

The slim slide profile and shorter barrel length is easy to carry yet retains the familiar controls of its full-size batterymate the P226.

Featuring the accuracy, reliability and durability of all SIG SAUER products, the P225-A1 combines the elements of the company’s history with the cutting-edge manufacturing of modern day SIG.

The P225-A1 is now shipping and available at SIG SAUER dealers across the country.

Kinetic Development Group – SIDELOK Aimpoint Micro Mount Now Available & Shipping

Wednesday, November 4th, 2015

KDG expands their lineup of SIDELOK optic mounts with a new model for the popular Aimpoint micro red dot optics. Designed to fit Aimpoint T1, T2, H1 and H2 models, the mount will also fit other popular miniature red dots that share the same footprint. The Sidelok micro mount allows the user to achieve a lower 1/3 co-witness with flip up iron sights when mounted on the AR-15 or M4 carbine.  This lightweight, 2.7 ounce Aluminum mount uses KDG’s Sidelok (pat. Pending) cam lock system to attach to picatinny rails instantly. With no tools needed to attach the mount, the user simply rocks their setup onto the chosen mounting space, and down onto the rail. Once pressed down, the Micro Mount self locks, and the optic can be zeroed in the usual fashion. Removal is equally fast, and can be accomplished with one hand even while wearing gloves. The front-located release button has a smaller, recessed secondary lock, which must be deliberately pressed in to facilitate removal; similar to the way a Glock trigger safety works. Do to its’ design, it is virtually impossible to accidentally engage the release, and the cam lock system ensures a secure grasp on various sized (and some out of spec) picatinny rails. This equates to a fast, easy means of removing and attaching optics while retaining an absolute return to zero. The smooth sides of the mount prevent snagging and “Busted Knuckle Syndrome”, while the unique skeletonized riser reduces the overall weight of the mount.

KDG plans to continue releasing more Sidelok models for other common optics, including one for the recently released Trijicon MRO. The new Aimpoint Micro Mount is currently available on their website and at their authorized dealers and distributors. MSRP for the mount is $139.00. For more information visit the links below.

High Angle Solutions – CTOMS – M2-Harness

M2 System Complete Kit With PS

The M-Harness was born of CTOMS’ drive to produce designs customized to the unique capability requirements of defense and security, rather than simply adapt a typical recreational mountaineering harness and offer it in “military colors”. The concept behind the M-Harness was to build a safe design, where the main belt could be worn as a standard trouser belt, with the convenience of a quick release belt, eliminating the requirement for carrying two belts, reducing weight and bulk. This design also sped up donning and doffing the harness, and allows the user to to keep their feet planted while donning the leg loops, ideal when wearing crampons or skis.

The M2 system is an evolution of the original M-Harness design. The buckles were shrunk for less weight and bulk. This also allowed the use of smaller webbing. AustriAlpin customized the buckles for CTOMS so the tabs are flush with the frame for additional safety. Padding was added as a standard feature on the leg loops, and the rear support straps are field replaceable. CTOMS ensured that the safety and function of the harness was the highest standard, not compromising any safety features for convenience, but also not compromising convenience (see Private Bloggins Harnesses 101).

M2-Belt Coyote Brown

As for the belt, it is 1 3/4″ wide for fit into 2″ trouser belt loops; a 2″ Duty Belt version that has internal loop Velcro, and an inner soft trouser belt are currently in production. The belt is also compatible with the CTOMS X-Belt padding and armor system, making for a versatile and scalable system. If a harness is not in your requirements, it also happens to make for a pretty good standalone belt, as well.
