Industry Day At The Range – Battle Arms Development OIP 2.0

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

IMG_0145

A few years back, Battle Arms Development unveiled the OIP ‘Ounces Is Pounds’ rifle, a limited-production AR-15 pattern carbine, designed in concert with Bentwood Gunsmithing to see just how light an AR could be while retaining proper function. At this year’s Range Day, they had the OIP 2.0 at the firing line.

The OIP weighs in at easily under 4 lbs., with a receiver that is further skeletonized when compared to BAD’s already aggressively lightened lightweight receiver set, and the receiver extension is as minimalist as it can possibly be; pretty much a fixed aluminum tube with a shoulder rest for a stock. The barrel, a very slim pencil profile, was noted by the rep as being even lighter than the already heavily lightened dimpled barrel of the original OIP. As you may also notice, the optic, in this case a Trijicon MRO, is supported by a skeletonized mount. True to its name, if there’s a place weight could be saved on this rifle, it was saved.

If you’re wondering how the reduction in weight effected the recoil, it wasn’t bad. .223/5.56 isn’t really a recoil-intensive round to begin with, so even with the reduction in rifle weight, it was still extremely controllable.

The rep at the booth noted that they had enough components to build roughly 50 OIP 2.0s. Despite this, no immediate word on availability.

Initiating 5-year contract to provide new maritime assault suit systems for Navy use

Bellingham, WA – Mustang Survival®, the North American manufacturer of innovative solutions for the most demanding marine environments, proudly announces it has started delivering the Maritime Assault Suit System (MASS) and Lightweight Maritime Assault Suit System (L-MASS) for Navy use, having been awarded a 5-year IDIQ contract by the U.S. government.  Developed for users engaging in maritime operations, the MASS and L-MASS are both waterproof and breathable. And while they meet the requirements of splash and/or immersed hypothermia protection, both suits utilize military Gore-Tex® fabrics for a lightweight, comfortable design for constant wear while achieving mission objectives.

“Designing and manufacturing the most innovative gear possible to protect those who protect us is a mission we undertake with an immense amount of pride and respect for those we’re serving. Each article of gear and apparel takes the end-users’ mission, safety and comfort into account. Not only is the weight substantially reduced, but so is the thermal burden traditionally associated with dry suits,” explains Brian Dalgliesh, manager for the U.S. Military Channel for Mustang Survival.

With weights of less than 5 pounds for the MASS (MSD674vMA) and less than 4 pounds for the L-MASS (MSD678vMA), the dry suit’s sophisticated design technology and features do not hinder movement or mobility while keeping the operator safe and dry.  The Mustang Survival MASS & L-MASS deliver surface operations dry suits that wear like standard operational clothing, but provide the protection of a dry suit. MASS is based on Mustang Survival’s MSD674vTO Sentinel™ Series Tactical Operations Dry Suit and the L-MASS is based on the MSD678 Sentinel Series Ultra-Lightweight Dry Suit.

Exclusive to Mustang Survival, the Sentinel Series dry suits feature:

–       Mobility Based Sizing™ offers users a semi-custom fit that reduces bulk and increases mobility without the custom price tag.

–       Rapid Repair Technology™ enables users to field replace neck and wrist seals and repair small leaks in an hour or less. Now includes Rapid Repair Socks.

SHOT Show Industry Day At The Range – CMMG Guard

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

IMG_0166

The Guard is an AR-15 pattern pistol caliber carbine manufactured by CMMG. With a receiver crafted from billet 7075 aluminum, the Guard features CMMG’s Radial Delayed blowback action. Noted by a CMMG rep to be the US answer to H&K’s roller delayed blowback action, Radial Delayed Blowback utilizes a bolt that forced to rotate and unlock from the chamber upon firing, slowing the carrier group enough to safely cycle. This unique action allows for a lighter bolt carrier group and buffer than would traditionally be required for pistol-caliber AR pattern weapons, and also reduces felt recoil.

The Guard is designed to accept Glock magazines, and is available in both 9mm and .45 ACP.

AttackPAK Integrated Load Carriage System (ILCS)

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

AttackPAK has been issued 2 patents for their Integrated Load Carriage System (ILCS). The system is designed to unburden the soldier by integrating armor, fighting, and sustainment loads into one-system, with a universal chassis. The design is based on an independent waist belt and frame for optimum load distribution, which also doesn’t restrict range of motion or agility.

This is a simple and robust design that has no moving parts to break. It can be worn connected or disconnected, inside of body armor, over body armor, or without body armor, to adapt to every user. The AttackPAK is easy to ditch in an emergency and can be donned without assistance.

The frame and belt provide an ergonomic fit for each user. Three different model belts are available to carry more or less weight. The AttackPAK system can utilize suspenders to transfer weight between the hips and shoulders to reduce fatigue. The packs are modular and scalable to adapt to changing missions.

The AttackPAK is a complete solution, designed from the ground up, to eliminate redundancy and the “Christmas tree” effect. The resulting system eliminates 2+ pounds from currently fielded equipment.

Lessons learned, Afghanistan and Iraq:
Soldiers need body armor or plate carriers that more comfortably facilitates a heavy rucksack.

In 2016 the US Soldier Enhancement Program purchased 60 demonstration units for testing and evaluation. This purchase followed AttackPAK’s response to SPD9 in 2011.

PAK has been designing, building, and repairing backpacks for over 30 years. His years of Mountain Rescue and high-altitude ski patroller service gave him the real-world testing opportunities. His lifelong friend retired from NSWDG after 20 years and complained about constant back pain from carrying heavy equipment with ineffective gear. That friend’s Tier 1 military expertise, combined with mountaineering pack comfort, helped create the AttackPAK, a new system designed to eliminate the “suck” and provide greater soldier safety.

The AttackPAK design is beneficial for backcountry hikers, mountaineers, rescuer workers, as well as military, law enforcement, and wildland firefighters. The products can be seen at attackpak.com.

SHOT Show Industry Day At The Range – Glock

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

Glock had their new range of Gen 5 pistols out at range day, including the G19X, which is based on Glock’s entry for the US Army’s Modular Handgun System solicitation.

IMG_0130

Right off the bat, it’s fair to say that the G19X isn’t a true Gen 5 pistol. While it incorporates some of the Gen 5 changes, such as a dual finish slide, ambidextrous safety, and lack of finger grooves, in was developed specifically for the US Army’s solicitation. What this translates to, feature-wise, is:

A compact-size slide on a full-size frame
A removable lanyard loop
Tan-colored magazines
No front grip cutout

This lack of a cutout also means the new Gen 5 magazines are incompatible with the G19X, due to their larger floor plates, but older Gen magazines are good-to-go. Factory +2 floor plates also up the capacity to 19+1.

Elaborating on the aforementioned “dual finish slide”, much like the Gen 5 guns feature an nDLC finish, the G19X features an nPVD finish, with a color the rep was adamant should be referred to as ‘Coyote’; officially, it’s not Flat Dark Earth, Desert Tan, or any such variation, folks.

The trigger, noted in literature as featuring a smoother pull with a weight of 5.8 lbs., felt pretty similar to a standard Glock factory trigger, if a bit nicer. The factory night sights were clear and functional, and easy to point at the target. The full-size grip, derisive as it’s seen by some, felt good in the hand, with the lack of finger grooves contributing to the comfort.
