Introducing The S.O.Tech Tactical Evacuation Pack

Wednesday, July 12th, 2023

The Tactical Evacuation Pack is a lightweight compressible bag that zips into a small pack that mounts to the belt or upper rear plate carrier and unzips to expose a full size backpack to quickly accept raid evidence or high value items of a wounded soldier for air evacuation.

The durable but ultralight nylon zippered backpack accepts a plate carrier and gun belt with pouches and a helmet with radios to secure a wounded soldier’s high value items. It can also accept laptops, files and media during sensitive site exploitation. At 17” high x 14” wide x 9 “ depth this a substantially sized pack. The pack is also ideal to function in escape and evasion foraging bag in SERE mode. Zippered closure provides positive control of contents and webbing shoulder straps and pull handle facilitate control during movement.

When closed, the small rectangular pouch presents a zippered pouch to hold an optional evacuation marking, lighting and tagging kit as well as a patients face mask. This can be worn on a belt using the Flex Tab MOLLE compatible loops forming a belt pouch that expands into a pack. However, the intended mounting places the closed pack at the top of the rear plate carrier attaching via the Flex Tab MOLLE system or the top of a pack. The small pouch is accessible while main pack is zippered closed.

When unzipped the expanded pack can be worn while MOLLE mounted to the plate carrier, or it can be quickly unfastened and worn like a regular pack using the shoulder straps. Note that when the pouch is kept attached to the vest, the backpack straps can stay inside the pack, or they can pull the body of the pack forward by pulling the shoulder straps onto the shoulders. So when carrying the pack independently, the weight is shared between the shoulders and the point of MOLLE fastening to the upper rear plate carrier. When mounted on the tope of a pack, it can be expanded to carry light loads for a short distance (such as bandages and dressings). Made of 200 denier Cordura nylon in OCP camouflage but also available in tan and black.

Sneak Peek – Emissary Development Alternator

Wednesday, July 12th, 2023

Emissary Development’s Alternator addresses some of the shortcomings of using two illumination and/or laser aiming devices at the same time.

The design of the Alternator is simply a housing that clamps over two existing Unity Modbutton Lite switches. It has its own actuation surface that sits above the switches and features three pads that use different textures and their own unique angle to make it easier to differentiate each pad from another.

The forward and rearward pads fire off the switch directly underneath them but the middle pad will activate both switches simultaneously.

It also features a fully fenced off body that helps prevent accidental activation of the switches.

They plan to offer two different versions, a “standard fence” and a “raised fence” variant.

The standard fence has the activation buttons flush with the surrounding protective barrier (designed to prevent unwanted activation) of the housing. This will be the most comfortable and lowest profile version.

The raised fence, as it’s name implies, has a slightly raised protective barrier for those looking for a bit more added insurance against the possibility of unwanted activation of the buttons. Keep in mind this model stands slightly taller on the rail that the standard model.

Both versions are designed to prevent AD/NDs so while there really isn’t a massive difference between them they wanted to offer options that the end user can select which model fits their needs best.

Parry Labs Receives $38 Million Award for Electronic Warfare System

Tuesday, July 11th, 2023

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 10, 2023 — ADS Inc. has been awarded a delivery order by DLA Troop Support on behalf of the U.S Army for production of a system to support the safety and security of our troops against modern improvised explosions and electromagnetic threats. The hardware to fulfill the $38 million delivery order will be produced by ADS’s sub-contractor, Parry Labs LLC in Columbia, Maryland.

The expeditionary ultra broadband, man-portable jammer is designed specifically for utilization by certified bomb technicians and enhances soldier lethality through protection and sustainment of operations. This next-generation electronic countermeasures capability “jams” radio frequencies thereby reducing the vulnerability of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) soldiers to the latest Remote Controlled IED (RCIED) threats, which often result in critical injury or death. Development, transition, and fielding of this system will enhance the warfighter’s ability to safely conduct operations and help ensure US forces remain dominant on the battlefield of the future.

“Parry is proud to support the Army and the wider EOD community with this next generation electronic warfare system,” said CEO John Parkes. “Our solution provides capabilities needed by EOD teams to maintain freedom of maneuver and secure lines of communications.”

First delivery of the electronic warfare devices is planned for the early part of FY2024.

Thyrm Switchback

Monday, July 10th, 2023

I’ve found that once in awhile it’s good to reintroduce older products to the SSD readership as there are constantly new readers coming on board.

The Switchback is a flashlight accessory which screws a retention ring into place between the body and tail cap. It has become a mainstay of the Thyrm line and expanded over time to five different models which will fit most popular handheld lights.

• The now defunct SwitchBack Large was the original SwitchBack Large, compatible with many 1-inch diameter lights.

SwitchBack Large 2.0 is the newest version of the Large SwitchBack, compatible with even more 1-inch diameter lights and with several improved features.

SwitchBack DF is an extra-large flashlight ring that is compatible with Surefire Dual Fuel handheld lights and Pelican 7600 flashlights.

SwitchBack HOG is an extra-extra-large flashlight ring that is compatible with the Modlite HOG handheld light.

SwitchBack S Backup is a smaller flashlight ring that is compatible with most Surefire “EDC” and legacy Backup lights.

Many appreciate the versatility the SwitchBack adds to handheld lights by aiding retention, but the most common criticism I hear is from people who have never actually tried one.

They either rely soley on a weapon mounted light, which means they’ve got to expose their pistol and point it at things they might not want to point a weapon at, or they see others use a modified shooting grip with the flashlight and declare that they don’t shoot that way.

Got it. I don’t either. But I do like to know that I’m not going to accidentally drop my light while I’m using it.

For those of you who do shoot that way, SwitchBack makes it much easier to establish and maintain a solid grip on your light.

Warrior East 23 – Towed Jumper Release System

Friday, July 7th, 2023

One of the hazards of jumping out of perfectly good airplanes is that every once in awhile a paratrooper gets stuck, being dragged along with the aircraft by his static line or other piece of equipment. This is referred to as a “towed jumper”. Generally, they attempt to reel the jumper back inside the aircraft with a hydraulic system which I can only imagine feels like being beaten by a pillow case full of doorknobs as you’re smacked against the side of the aircraft and back in through the troop door. An alternative is the cut the jumper away if he is conscious and allow him to manually his reserve parachute.

Now, there’s a twist on that latter course of action which inserts a backup parachute between the aircraft and jumper before cutting his primary static line. The Towed Jumper Release System from Airborne Systems, is a modification of a British system known as the Hung Up Parachutist Release Assembly, or HUPRA.

The system uses a static line to deploy a T11 main canopy over the jumper and he retains access to his chest mounted reserve chute and his main doesn’t deploy but rather remains within its deployment bag on the packtray.
