2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – Rheinmetall Vario-Ray Low Profile

Monday, March 26th, 2018

Designed and developed by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics (RSE) in Stockach, Germany, the Vario-Ray Low Profile (VR-LP) is the latest version of their Vario-Ray line. It combines laser aiming and illuminating into a single device which is waterproof to 30m for 2 hours. It is very low profile, sitting just 1 inch above the Picatinny rail, with simple-to-use push button controls.

Available with Green or Red visible laser, the VR-LP also incorporates an IR illuminator and target marker. The laser block is aligned at the factory which simplifies boresighting. Additionally, there is an eye-safe training mode when the blue blocking screw is installed.

2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – RE Factor Flexible Antenna Mast

Monday, March 26th, 2018

Quantico Tactical gave us a sneak peek at the new Flexible Antenna Mast by RE Factor Tactical.

Over the years, communicators have rigged up various ways to communicate via SATCOM while on the move. Fortunately, antennas have gotten smaller, to the point where they can be mounted directly to a vest. That’s where things get tricky. You need to point the antenna in at least the general direction of the bird and its shape offers some challenges on how to keep it in place. There are also times where it’s preferable to have the antenna folded. We’ve all seen guys use PVC stuffed into PALS webbing or ziptied in place but that is a bit too rigid.

RE Factor Tactical developed a flexible mast which can be woven into PALS webbing on a vest and will accept most manpackable SATCOM antennas. It is flexible, but will retain the shape you select.

Ops-Core Helmets Evaluated During Urban Advanced Naval Technology Exercise 2018

Monday, March 26th, 2018

Last week, the Marine Corps conducted Urban Advanced Naval Technology Exercise 2018 (Urban ANTX-18) at Camp Pendleton, California.

52CCE013-2CBD-4C5D-BD60-995265AA61F3

During the exercise, Marines with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division evaluated a wide variety of technologies, particularly visual augmentation equipment. But in every case, they were wearing Ops-Core helmets to protect the Marines’ heads and serve as a head Orne platform.

The helmets featured the new step-in visor, RAC headsets and soft mandibles.

2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – SAIN Defense Firearm Cleaning System

Friday, March 23rd, 2018

At the US Tactical Supply I finally got a chance to check out the SAIN Defense Firearm Cleaning System In person. The amount of thought, and work, that went into this thing is impressive.

E433CF90-F0CB-433A-A009-7070A23A93F3

It’s available in 5.56 and 7.62 versions. Either one come packed in a Coyote or MultiCam pouch. The contents consist of:

Rod Sections for the kit are 17-4PH Stainless steel and 360 Brass (7.62 sections). (NOTE: 5.56 sections do not have bore riders due to small bore diameter. Uses standard, commercial (COTS) 8-32 male bore attachments.) Brass bore riders (softer than the bore) keep rod centered, reinforce the section joints, and keep the stainless rod off of the bore. Rod sections are knurled for assembly/disassembly with wet hands and without the use of tools. The rod is extremely strong and precision manufactured.

Picatinny Rail Interface (Patented): 6061 aluminum. Allows the rod to spin freely, forms a conventional T-handle, and also allows the weapon fore grip to be used as a handle. Also equipped with a 3/8” drive socket attachment which may be used as a weapons maintenance tool.

US Tactical Supply has both versions on GSA schedule (GS-07F-0259N).

2018 USASOC Sniper Comp – Modular Handgun System Enhancements From SIG

Friday, March 23rd, 2018

3AF25A15-05E6-49E8-882A-9336F0FD6889

Based on the commercially available SIG P320, the new Modular Handgun System can be configured as the full-size M17 or in the compact M18 configuration. MHS more than lives up to Modular aspect of its name, with possible upgrades not even yet conceived by the Army. For example, the slide is equipped with a removable plate to accept a red dot optic. Additionally, the fire control unit is compatible with other P320 grip modules.

In an initiative akin to the Special Operations Peculiar Modification (SOPMOD) program for the M4 carbine, SIG is demonstrating enhancements for MHS.

98D429C0-965F-4F38-87FB-358C477A6CCD

This has an M18 with an X-series grip. It incorporates an after market magwell, which works as a chute to speed reloads and also includes a Romeo 1T sight from SIG Optics as well as suppressor height front sight.

However, the slide can also be configured with an adjustable rear via the sight plate.

5ABC97B7-D7E3-4FC0-9E20-250C0DB116B4

Additionally, they have installed a flat trigger and removed the manual safety found on MHS.

These enhancements aren’t being offered as a package, but rather as a demonstration narrator to get users to consider ways to leverage the weapon’s modularity.

SIG and after market accessory manufacturers continue to roll out new products. Even more will come now that the P320 has been adopted for US military service as MHS.
