Protonex Launches Updated EOD Kit

The Universal Power Kit, based on Protonex’ industry-leading SPM-622 Squad Power Manager, dramatically reduces the weight and clutter of batteries, chargers and power adapters currently used by military EOD teams.

The original SPM-612 EOD kit, pioneered by Protonex in partnership with the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Naval Sea Systems Command (NavSea) and Navy EOD Training & Evaluation Team Two, was deployed to all Navy EOD teams in 2014. The teams subsequently reported a reduction in charger and adapter weight from 45-lbs. to 9-lbs., with a correspondingly large decrease in space taken up in the EOD team vehicle.

The Navy EOD teams were also the first to request that Protonex package each intelligent power manager kit in a rugged “roll kit”, keeping the equipment organized and ready for use while decreasing volume and weight. More than 90% of all power management kits shipped to every branch of the U.S. military and many allied militaries are now requested in nylon roll kits.

The updated EOD Universal Power Kit includes the SPM-622 Squad Power Manager, with additional power-handling and intelligence, as well as full waterproofing (the SPM-622 can be used while submerged up to 1-meter). Additional equipment support also now includes the latest Minehound® and other metal detectors, as well as DeWalt® and Snap-On® tool batteries and other EOD-specific equipment.

“The new enhanced EOD universal power kit builds on the capability established with the original SPM-612 kit and gives today’s EOD teams the most advanced universal power solution available,” said Michael Skinkle, Protonex EOD Account Manager. “When used in conjunction with our Adaptive Battery Charger, EOD teams have a total power management solution that is more efficient and rugged than other options.”

Here is a sneak peek of the New Huron MDX9 Medical Pack. Following our philosophy, Innovate or Die, we have designed the next generation in medical gear to assist first responders who are assigned as tactical medics, rescue task force members, or individual FIRE/EMS/LEOs. Our new Huron™ medical packs are designed specifically around the guidelines from the Committee for Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) and the principle that no one should bleed to death from uncontrolled hemorrhage. Current TECC guidelines recommend all first responders carry tourniquets, learn to pack wounds and utilize hemostatic dressings, and learn to seal chest wounds following the MARCHE protocols. TECC is the civilian evolution of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC), written to address the differences in civilian populations and operational environments.

The MDX9 is designed specifically to carry multiple emergency medical items required in a Mass Casualty situation. It has ample storage space and organizational features that assist users in identifying the required items for treatment, and quickly accessing them for application.

USSOCOM Selects M-Lok For Weapon Programs

While we’ve heard rumors of a USSOCOM directed study by NSWC-Crane of weapon accessory attachment systems, we only recently came into possession of evidence of that study, conducted in 2016. We present to you the summary of the report, as it offers the most pertinent facts. However, we are not offering up the rest of the report, as it contains proprietary information regarding the Magpul M-Lok attachment as well as other, competing systems.

The summary states:

SUMMARY
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) conducted testing for the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to evaluate modular rail systems and provide a recommendation based on the performance characteristics of each system. Modular rail systems were evaluated for repeatability, endurance, rough handling, drop testing, and static failure load. Where possible, handguards manufactured in different modular rail systems, but otherwise identical, were used as a basis for a comparative analysis. All tested modular rail systems showed to be adequate for securing accessories during cyclic loading through endurance and rough handling testing. However, distinct performance differences were observed from repeatability, drop test, and failure load analysis. Overall, test and evaluation demonstrated that the M-LOKTM modular rail system surpassed the performance results achieved by other modular rail systems. In repeatability testing, M-LOKTM allowed for the repeated installation of the same accessory rail in the same location on a handguard with an average point of aim (POA) shift of 1.3 MOA, as low as one quarter the average POA shift observed by other modular rail systems. Drop test results demonstrated that M-LOKTM systems maintain securement of accessories to the handguard and sustain less damage from impact forces than some other modular rail systems. Failure load testing demonstrated that M-LOKTM systems support the highest load of all modular rail systems tested. In fact, the test equipment used to interface with 1913 accessory rails secured with the respective modular rail system across testing repeatedly failed prior to failure of the M-LOKTM attachment system. Even so, testing of the M-LOKTM systems failed at loads as high as over three times the maximum failure load of some other modular rail systems. NSWC Crane recommended to USSOCOM that the M-LOKTM modular rail system be utilized over the alternative systems tested. USSOCOM has chosen to incorporate the M-LOKTM modular rail system in acquisition efforts including the Suppressed Upper Receiver Group (SURG) and Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR).

Of additional note, the US Army directed H&K to integrate an M-LOK rail (designed by Geissele) on the new Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System rifle which is an indication of wider Dod adoption of M-Lok.
