Shell Shock Technologies’ NAS3 Casings Used in Liberty Ammunition’s New Ultra-Lights

Thursday, December 19th, 2019

Liberty Ammunition’s new Ultra-Lights, featuring Shell Shock Technologies’ casings, are 52 percent lighter than standard 125 grain 9mm lead jacketed hollow-points.

Westport, Conn. (December 2019) – Shell Shock Technologies, LLC., an early-stage technology and manufacturing company focused on developing innovative case technologies for the ammunition industry, announces that Liberty Ammunition has introduced its Ultra-Lights round featuring Shell Shock Technologies’ revolutionary NAS3 casings.

The new Liberty Ammunition Ultra-Lights are the Civil Defense rounds taken one step further. Liberty Ammunition’s innovative projectiles have been added to Shell Shock Technologies’ groundbreaking NAS3 casings. The 9mm Ultra-Lights total cartridge weighs only 93 grains, and is 52 percent lighter than standard 125 grain 9mm lead jacketed hollow-points.

“We are truly excited and proud to have our cutting-edge casings be a part of Liberty Ammunition’s innovative new Ultra-Light round,” said Craig Knight, CEO of Shell Shock Technologies.

Ultra-Lights Ballistic Performance:

• Total Cartridge Weight: 93 Grains

• Projectile Weight: 50 Grains

• Velocity: > 2,000 feet per second

• Kinetic Energy: > 450 ft. lbs.

• Permanent Cavity: 3 ½” W x 10-13” D

• Accuracy: < 1” at 25 meters

Liberty Ammunition’s Ultra-Lights projectiles are copper monolithic with nickel plating and are turned on a precision CNC machine for consistency and accuracy. They are lightweight, extremely fast projectiles, with a large diameter deep hollow-point cavity.

Our ammo penetrates barriers well, but when this cavity fills with soft tissue/liquid, the hydraulic pressure explodes the side walls of the projectile in a starburst-shaped pattern creating a devastating wound with multiple channels that cover a much greater area inside the target. Combined with Shell Shock Technologies’ two-piece cases, the new Ultra-Lights are the ultimate self-defense round.

About Shell Shock Technologies NAS3 Cases:

NAS3 9mm cases are 50 percent lighter than brass cases, offer greater lubricity and will not abrade, clog, foul, wear-out or damage breach and ejector mechanisms. The cases offer greater corrosion resistance, tensile strength (2x stronger) and elasticity than brass. NAS3 cases will not split, chip, crack or grow (stretch) and are fully reloadable (using S3 Reload dies) and can be reloaded many more times than brass cases. NAS3 cases have been tested successfully by customers to pressures over 70k psi. NAS3 cases can be picked up with a magnet. The head can be colored for branding purposes and easy load identification.

NAS3 is “Best in Class” for maintaining consistent velocity between rounds. In an independent test performed by H.P. White Laboratory (a major munitions testing facility), rounds fired using NAS3 cases achieved a velocity standard deviation of 0.093 FPS (124-grain FMJ bullet, 4.2 grains Titegroup powder, 10 rounds, extreme variation 3fps).

SIG SAUER Announces New Bolt Gun And Caliber – SIG CROSS & 277 SIG FURY

Wednesday, December 18th, 2019

SIG SAUER made two big announcements today. First is their designed and manufactured in the USA bolt action rifle, the CROSS. Offered in .308, 6.5 Creedmoor and a brand new caliber, it will retail for around $1600.

SIG has done a great job establishing themselves as a defense company and the introduction of the CROSS is a concerted move into the hunting market. But as you can see, this bolt action rifle takes a lot of cues from their defense products.

In addition to the rifle, they are commercializing the 6.8mm ammunition developed for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program as the 277 SIG FURY round. SIG claims to be getting 3000 FPS velocity from a 16″ barrel when fired from the CROSS. This owes to the cartridge’s three-piece design case which features a brass case and steel head held with a clip. This is the same cartridge design being offered to the military, but now coming to you.

While the 277 SIG FURY cartridge is awaiting approval from SAAMI, SIG expects it be certified for SHOT Show.

The CROSS I fired incorporated a dust cover but SIG was toying with the idea of eliminating it on the production version. In addition to a 3-lug bolt, the CROSS relies on AICS pattern magazines.

Here, I’m firing the CROSS in 277 SIG Fury using SIG produced hybrid-cased ammo during a recent visit to SIG Academy in New Hampshire. It was quite controllable and the rifle performed well as I shot multiple magazines through it.

My friend Tom Beckstrand produced a great video on the CROSS for his Youtube channel, SpeedLoads.

Here is SIG’s press release on the CROSS:

SIG SAUER Introduces CROSS Rifle: The First SIG SAUER Precision Bolt-Action Hunting Rifle Manufactured in the USA

NEWINGTON, N.H., (December 18, 2019) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to introduce the CROSS Rifle.  The first SIG-built precision bolt-action hunting rifle is designed by SIG SAUER engineers, completely manufactured and machined at the SIG SAUER facilities in New Hampshire, and tested by premier competitive shooters, the world’s best long range shooters, and a team of professional hunters that the CROSS is built for.

When our product management team and engineers researched developing a bolt-action rifle, they looked at what was missing from the market, and what new innovation SIG could bring to hunters and precision shooters,” began Tom Taylor, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, Commercial Sales.  “Hunting rifles are typically focused on less weight, and accuracy is secondary.  Precision rifles are designed for extreme accuracy, with no weight limitations.  What was missing from the market was a true crossover.  Our product management team and engineers took the best of both worlds and developed the CROSS featuring the characteristics of a hunting rifle, with the accuracy of a precision rifle.”

The CROSS Precision Bolt-Action Hunting Rifle is a lightweight precision rifle with a push button, foldable SIG precision stock, a one-piece aluminum receiver that eliminates the need for bedding the action, and AI magazines for creating the most accurate precision hunting platform. The CROSS features a stainless-steel rifled barrel with a free-float M-LOK handguard, a 2-stage match-grade trigger externally adjustable from 2.5 – 4 lbs., ambi-safety, a three-lug bolt design with a 60-degree throw and interchangeable bolt handle.  The precision stock is spring-loaded for one handed operation and can be fully adjusted in the field for length of pull and comb height with no tools.  The rifle has a full-length replaceable picatinny rail that allows for direct optics mounts, 20 MOA, and O MOA.  The CROSS is available in 6.5 Creedmoor, 308 WIN, and the soon-to-be-released 277 SIG Fury Hybrid Ammunition with a black anodized or First Lite camo finish.

“Right out of the box the CROSS comes loaded with new innovation and features that hunters and precision shooters will appreciate at a very affordable $1,779.00 MSRP price point,” continued Taylor.  “The CROSS delivers on all fronts, and we are especially proud that everything about the CROSS from concept to completion is 100% SIG SAUER and comes directly from our U.S. operations here in New Hampshire.”

Rheinmetall Sets Three New Distance Records For Indirect Fire In South Africa

Saturday, November 30th, 2019

At a test fire event on 6 November at the Alkantpan Test Range in South Africa, Rheinmetall demonstrated its extensive expertise in the world of indirect fire. In the presence of international partners and customers, the Düsseldorf, Germany-based defence contractor proved how new technologies can be used to boost the performance of systems that are already in extensive use around the world – those which meet the NATO standards set out in the Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding (JBMoU) as well as non-JBMoU systems.  During the event, three new maximum effective range records were set using various guns.  A G6 howitzer with a 52-calibre gun achieved the longest range ever attained with a conventional 155mm artillery round: 76 kilometres, while the 52-calibre gun of PzH2000 self-propelled howitzer lobbed a shell 67 kilometres. Finally, a field howitzer with a 39-calibre gun attained a range of 54 kilometres.

The following table shows the ranges achieved with various projectiles and charges.

Rheinmetall Waffe and Munition, Rheinmetall’s centre of excellence for cannon technology, showcased the self propelled howitzer PzH 2000’s main armament in action. Over the past decade, this 155mm weapons system has proven to be one of the world’s most effective conventional artillery systems, capable of attaining the high rates of fire specified in the JBMoU. Developed and manufactured by Denel Land Systems, the G6 used at the live fire event was a new version designed to attain greater ranges in line with non-JBMoU standards.

Using the celebrated Assegai V-LAP shell is an example, modular upgrades of the artillery ammunition were on show at the event. The delegations could see for themselves the marked improvement in its performance with respect both to propulsion and range when fired from 39- and 52-calibre guns. Coupled with technologies from Rheinmetall Waffe Munition and Nitrochemie, Rheinmetall Denel Munition artillery shells exceed previous maximum effective ranges when fired from any conventional 155mm artillery system currently in use.

The maximum range of over 76 km was achieved with a non-JBMoU-compliant gun. This gun served as evidence of the feasibility of a new howitzer with a range of 83 km. Working in close cooperation with the German procurement authorities, Rheinmetall plans to develop and manufacture a new 155mm gun of this type, which will feature a significantly larger chamber and a longer, 60-calibre barrel. The gun should be able to fire existing JBMoU-compliant rounds as well as new ammunition families. On the one hand, these new ammunition types will be optimized with respect to stresses occurring in the new gun, but will also be able to be fired from legacy JBMoU-compliant guns. Here, 83 kilometres serves as the benchmark, since the course correction fuse necessary for precision at these ranges reduces the attainable range by approximately ten percent. This means that the maximum effective range of 75 kilometres specified by the German procurement authorities is attainable.

Rheinmetall Norway’s 120mm Ragnarok motor system and ammunition from RDM round out the Group’s indirect fire profile. This combination lends itself especially well to multipurpose vehicle applications with a rapid-fire capability. It also enables friendly forces to quickly evade counterbattery fire.

The event’s host, the German-South African joint venture Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM), welcomed participants from several NATO nations to the event in Northern Cape province on 6 November. As RDM managing director Jan-Patrick Helmsen explains, “Our goal is to be a true partner to the military. That’s why transparent cooperation and trust are so important to us. Tube artillery can provide defensive and offensive fire support. It’s cheaper and faster than rockets or air support, can operate around the clock, and engage targets with great precision using indirect fire anywhere within its range. Of course, range has proved to be a limiting factor in recent years, giving rise to the need for increased operational reach.” During the event, Jan-Patrick Helmsen noted that RDM has already been working to extend the range of artillery shells for some time now. “We’re known for the Assegai family and our V-LAP round, the longest-range conventional artillery projectile. The combination of South African technology and German expertise has already resulted in enhanced range, effectiveness and precision. When it comes to artillery, Rheinmetall takes a totally holistic approach”, declares Helmsen.
