The Science of Nothing – The Story of WL Gore’s New Camo Pattern

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Gore Optifade Concealment Technology – remember that name. It will probably be one of the biggest things at SHOT show this year but you can find out all about it now. Optifade has been developed specifically for the hunting and outdoor market but the information on the website is fantastic. It is presented in a Discovery Channel-style documentary format and I suggest everyone check it out for themselves. Of particular interest is the interview with Tim ONeil.

For more information check out Optifade. Not only do they discuss the science behind the camo, they also show behind the scenes at WL Gore.

PECOC in the British Press

PECOC

We have previously discussed the British Army’s new PECOC program here and here. Finally, the BBC has shown an interview showcasing the recent evolution of the British Soldier. Although the BBC interviewer never comes out and calls it PECOC, take a keen look at the three Tommies being interviewed. Not only will you see a slightly modified DPM, but a new armor vest, helmet, and eye protection. The hybrid camo we talked about in previous articles can be seen in the pic below. Please note that the pattern will be confined to armor and belt kit as the UK uses different uniform fabrics for temperate and desert environments. Following this reasoning, if you are going to use different fabrics, why not use different patterns. You can also see the Crye-style Combat Shirt in the PECOC camo. The MoD has determined that this will be the colorway for the new camo pattern but that they may come up with an entirely new pattern.

Pak Straps

Monday, September 15th, 2008

There is currently a dearth of bungees on the market that are well suited for military use. At the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, I found a small company named Rok Straps. They have a really cool line of elastic cargo straps and three models in particular are well suited for military use.

The two below, the Camo Rok and Camo Sport are both often used for vehicle applications. Note the heavy duty hooks. Additionally, the Sport features a side release buckle to allow handier access to equipment that has been tied down.

They also make a specialty strap that is smaller and designed for use with individual equipment. The Camo Adjustable is specifically designed to attach to back packs and secure smaller items without damaging waterproof materials. Quick release buckles ensure fast and quiet access to gear.

All of the camo straps are available in Black as well as a Green-based camo.

Blue Force Gear – UCP and Multicam Slings

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Blue Force Gear is the first company to offer their line of slings (except the Victory) in both Multicam and Universal Pattern. As with the rest of their product line, the webbing is low-IR with a flat, abrasion resistant finish. The Multicam pattern webbing has been approved by and is licensed from Crye Precision. The VCAS and Padded VCAS will be the first slings available in the new patterns. Deliveries should begin no later than mid-September.

If you want to know why this is so important, take a look at the picture below. Typically, slings are Black. The color matched UCP sling blends in perfectly with the ACU, drastically aiding the camouflage effect.

In addition to the new Universal Camouflage Pattern and Multicam, the slings are still available in Black, Coyote, Olive, and Foliage Green.
