Air Force Senior Leaders Update OCP Uniform Guidance

Wednesday, April 24th, 2019

03EC25FE-09FC-4356-95B5-E64B72FC8A91

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — The Air Force announced April 23 new rules on Operational Camouflage Pattern uniforms that aim to better fit the needs of Airmen and the jobs they do while also holding fast to tradition.

The changes highlighted include authorization of the Two-piece Flight Duty Uniform in garrison and updated patch guidance for the OCP uniform.

“During the initial rollout of the OCP, we originally matched our sister services regarding patch configurations as we sought to emphasize our role as a joint warfighting force,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein.

“In response to overwhelming feedback received from Airmen, we will make an easy ‘sleeve swap’ of the patch configuration to further elevate our focus on honoring the heritage of squadrons as the war-fighting units of the world’s greatest Air Force. We will now place the squadron patch on the right sleeve along with the U.S. flag and move the higher headquarters patch to the left sleeve of the OCP.”

Additionally, to provide commanders with expanded uniform options to fit the myriad of missions, on April 15, the two-piece flight suit, otherwise known as the 2PFDU, will be authorized to be worn in both garrison and deployed locations. The 2PFDU continues an effort to provide Airmen with improved form, fit and function to perform their duties in any environment.

The traditional flight duty uniform will also continue to be an option. Squadron commanders will now have the flexibility to make combat uniform decisions based on what is best for their Airmen to meet mission requirements.

“The new unit patch configuration of the OCP and 2PFDU also aligns with the traditional FDU, elevating the significance of squadron focus and identity, which supports CSAF’s intent to revitalize squadrons,” said Lt. Gen. Mark D. Kelly, Headquarters Air Force deputy chief of staff for Air Force operations.

In May 2018, Air Force leaders decided to transition to the OCP following feedback from Airmen that it is the best, battle-tested utility uniform available. It will also eliminate the need to maintain two separate uniforms – one for in-garrison and one for deployments.

The service expects to fully transition to OCPs by April 1, 2021.

For more information, Airmen should view Air Force Guidance Memorandum 2019-01 and check Air Force Instruction 36-2903 for updates, which are available on the public website of the Air Force’s Personnel Center at www.afpc.af.mil/Career-Management/Dress-and-Appearance.

Technical Adventure Travel Short Built in the USA

Prometheus Design Werx introduces their new ATAR Short – A.T.C. for Summer 2019 in their high performance, technical All Terrain Cloth and designed for the summer Adventurist and global traveller. The technical properties and signature feature set for this style are dialed for high versatility and as a multiplier for a wide breadth of activities. From summer alpine trekking in the Dolomites, remote tropical locations in the South Pacific to the bazaar of Marrakech, the ATAR Short is the one pack-and-go style that has it all well covered. 4-Way stretch, quick-dry, stain and water resistant, packs small, light weight, durable, secure zippered pockets and discreet everyday styling. Built in the USA.

The ATAR Short – A.T.C. is a seasonal style from Prometheus Design Werx. They will be available in Transitional Field Green, Machine Mineral Gray and All Terrain Brown.

The Design and R&D Team at PDW states:

“The ATAR Short is light, stretches, breathes, durable, and resists stains and water via a C6 DWR finish. This style packs small, is easily washed in a hotel sink and dries quickly. Every pocket has a zipper closure to secure your EDC and travel items to prevent loss and the opportunistic pickpocket. An additional internal pocket has been added to discreetly stash your favorite slip joint. An internal drawstring waist was added for times when you don’t want or need the bulk of a belt and a spontaneous ocean dip or hike to a waterfall, calls to you. This short is our most casual in styling. At first glance, the ATAR appears to be an unassuming Bermuda style walk short. The inseam and rise will sit slightly longer than our field styles and the cut is roomier. The smart and seasoned adventure traveller does not draw attention to himself, nor attempt to appear as if they walked out of a wannabe “Operators-R-Us” catalogue. The enjoyment and adventures in the far reaches of the world are predicated upon not being a target, being mindful, respectful and aware of your surroundings. Our ATAR Short will help you focus on the journey and experiences, and avoid the inconveniences and pitfalls of international adventure travel.”

The USA Made PDW ATAR Short – A.T.C. will be available for $109.00 on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 12:00 noon PT via their website, prometheusdesignwerx.com.

The Full 9 – Modified Desert Night Parka

Monday, April 22nd, 2019

First off hello to all SSD readers, it’s a great pleasure to be here.

TheFull9 is something I created as a pastime in the form of just discussing interesting gear, uniforms, camo kit and firearms.  Material comes both from my own collection and things that I find on my travels and at shows like SHOT.  One item of military apparel I posted not too long ago was the modified Desert Night parka pictured above and since that time an awful lot of people had asked me how they could go about getting one of their own.  If you happen to be interested in finding out the answer to that question you can follow the link below to my own site for all the details:

The blog entry is also posted here on facebook if you happen to use that platform.

Thanks folks

NAVAIR Approves Massif’s Hellman Combat Pant and Advanced Quarter Zip Combat Shirt

Tuesday, April 16th, 2019

Massif’s Hellman Combat Pant and Advanced Quarter Zip Combat Shirt are NAVAIR approved.  As a recent SOA list addition, these new items are interchangeable with the approved Massif 2 Piece flight suit to give Aircrews the flexibility to pick and choose flight gear based on mission and environment. This is huge for Naval Aircrews as this is the first time a Combat-Style pant with integrated knee pad has been approved for flight use. Navy and Marine Corps helo crews spend lots of time on their knees and this move is bringing much needed relief.

Massif has done a great job of working with various communities like naval and Marine Corps aviation to not only boost performance, but also preventing injuries.

Sneak Peek – Särmä TST L4 Combat Trouser from Varusteleka Oy

Monday, April 15th, 2019

Varusteleka has had the Särmä TST L4 Combat Trouser in development for three years now, but now they’re finally Finnished.

Originally, the idea was to produce a homegrown version of a standard combat pant, but turned out quite different in the end. The biggest thing that changed over the years was the fact that they are making these from a new mechanical stretch fabric.

The new fabric is a mechanical stretch ripstop (made from a 60/40 cotton/polyester blend using spiral polyester fibers which provide the stretch). This has eliminated the need for separate stretch fabric details, like the new Crye G4s. The camouflage print is done according to Finnish military NIR specifications.

They feature reinforced – double fabric reinforced seat, diamond gusset crotch, 500D reinforced knees, cuffs, and insteps. With all these hard wear areas reinforced these will last hard, extended use.

One little “special” thing is the cargo pockets flaps which can be closed with hook-and-loop (fast and noisy), a button (slow and silent) or both (superior security, slow and noisy) depending on user preference.

Knee pad inserts can be added, but the design works equally well without any inserts due to the standard enclosed design of the knee reinforcements. The enclosed design mitigates snagging issues and prevents snow and mud from clogging the seams where an internal-external hybrid knee pad (such as Crye) protrudes through the knee fabric.

These will be released in June, but may go on pre-order sooner. Learn more at www.varusteleka.fi/fi/product/sarma-tst-l4-taisteluhousut.
