Ray Summers, Director of Military Sales at Protonex stated;

“The adoption of our power management solutions by USSOCOM – as well as all branches of the conventional US military – has proven the ruggedness, effectiveness, and ease-of-use of our technology. The application of our power management solutions to the needs of EOD, Medical, Directed Fires, Unmanned Systems, and SOF Communications teams in the US has also spread to international Allied unit test and evaluation programs. Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback we’ve received from the field, we decided to participate in these highly regarded European events in order to showcase our solutions to an even wider audience.”

Protonex’s PTX line of rugged, intelligent, lightweight power management solutions includes the SPM-622 Squad Power Manager that dramatically reduces the number and variety of batteries needed by today’s warfighter; the ABC-812 Adaptive Battery Charger that allows end-users to charge all their batteries twice as fast, anywhere, and with half the energy; and the VPM-402 Vest Power Manager that manages both data and power for military communications and situational awareness systems.

The SPM-622 Squad Power Manager has also recently achieved “Safe-To-Fly Certification” by the United States Air Force for C-130H “Hercules” and C-130J “Super Hercules”. As the C-130 Hercules celebrated its 63rd birthday on August 23rd, this certification is particularly timely.

The Safe-To-Fly certification means that troops can plug their power managers into the aircraft’s power outlets while in-flight, without any danger of interference with the aircraft’s systems. With this capability in hand, troops can focus on their mission, reduce time spent dealing with batteries and shrink their overall equipment footprint. The award of this certification also enables medical personnel to utilize the SPM-622 Universal Austere Medical Power (UAMP) Kit to continue running lifesaving equipment during the flight phase of a medical evacuation.

PTX power management solutions from Protonex enable units to maintain constant operational effectiveness – while greatly reducing their battery burden and logistics footprint.

Cohort Showcases Capability Across Land, Sea And Air Domains At DSEI

Wednesday, August 16th, 2017

Defence technology company Cohort plc will showcase its capabilities across the land, sea and air sectors at DSEI 2017.

Cohort’s four business units will all be represented, with their presence including Portugal-based EID for the first time following the company’s acquisition last year.

Cohort Chief Executive Andy Thomis commented: “We have a growing order book in our domestic markets and worldwide. DSEi offers an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our new technologies and capabilities.

Alongside products and services in the established domains, we will also be focusing on our latest work in sectors such as cyber.”

EID’s focus will be on integrated communications and control systems for naval and land applications, including its ICCS, Integrated Communications Control System for warships, as well as ICC-201 and ICC-251 vehicular intercoms for heavy and light configurations respectively, plus its TWH-100 series personal radios, in use by several Armed Forces.

Marlborough Communications (MCL) is the UK’s leading provider of hearing protection for military personnel with tens of thousands of systems in use across the land, sea and air domains. MCL will be focusing on its Tactical Hearing Protection Systems (THPS) for the Dismounted Close Combat User and THPS Basic User, along with systems for specialist users and for RAF air crew.

Cohort’s cyber and intelligence specialists MASS will be highlighting cyber risk assessment, security and digital operations centres, and critical national infrastructure protection. MASS will also be highlighting some of its latest Electronic Warfare technology.
MASS provides EW training at its specialist centre in Lincoln. Its expanding training portfolio also includes design and delivery of operational level exercises, where it has considerable experience in supporting UK and NATO forces, along with overseas customers. Another developing area for MASS is secure information systems and the move from management dashboards to management cockpits.

SEA will be reinforcing its maritime pedigree, including further developments of KraitArray, the innovative thin line towed sonar. KraitArray has attracted considerable interest from overseas navies recently, with the launch of the modular anti-submarine warfare suite – Krait Defence System – the go-to ASW solution for smaller vessels or platforms with restricted deck space.

SEA will also be displaying the latest in aviation training simulation systems, which now incorporate the most up-to-date virtual reality and augmented reality capabilities. One of the most successful applications is DECKsim providing an immersive, high fidelity, 3D virtual environment for training students in both flight deck and land-based operations.

Cohort plc can be found on Stand S6-240 at DSEI 17.

Carinthia Caters to SOF Clothing Requirements

Tuesday, October 6th, 2015

Another great European brand we had a chance to chat with at DSEI was Austria-based Carinthia.  They manufacture a range of sleeping bags, shelters and environmental clothing systems.  Several of their items are used by European SOF units and they often create special make up variants of their products such as those shown below.

This is a Gore-Tex shell that has been adopted by a European SOF organization. It’s a modified version of the Carinthia Tactical Rain Garment which includes Trousers. It utilizes a Topaz ePTFE membrane with a polyamide shell.

That same unit also issues this jacket was an insulated garment. It’s a variant of Carinthia’s Extreme Cold Insulation Jacket and includes Trousers. It uses G-loft ISO+ polyester insulation with a polyamide shell featuring a GORE Windstopper membrane.

Steiner – M-Series LRF

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

At DSEI, Steiner Optics showed us the M-830r LRF, a binocular that integrates a Laser Range Finder.  It will range targets from 25m to beyond 6,000m.

The laser range finder is a class 1 eyesafe laser, and this 8×30 power bino offers the Steiner Universal Mil Reticle (SUMR) for ranging in case of battery failure.  What’s more, the laser is out of band for NVGs so your adversaries won’t see your laser.

Torqeedo

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

During DSEI, Golden Arrow Marine exhibited quite a few maritime systems but this electric outboard by Torqeedo caught my eye.  The Travel model is available in 1.5 & 3hp variants and utilizes a Lithium battery that can be recharged by solar panel.

Lincad Power Management Systems – Caravel Mk2 Charger

Friday, October 2nd, 2015

The Caravel Mk2 Charger from Lincad will charge batteries regardless of electrochemistry or manufacturer. It utilizes a series of pigtail cables to aupport the range of batteries and can even recharge mobile devices.

It detects the type of battery as soon as it is attached to the charger. It offers full diagnostics of that battery and will not only charge it, but also discharge a battery via a heat sink in order to bring it to half charge for storage.

BAE Systems – Broadsword Spine

Thursday, October 1st, 2015

Broadsword Spine is BAE Systems’ smart textile demonstrator. It offers both power and data connectivity through an etextile that is inserted as a fabric layer in a garment or piece of equipment. Early work in this field centered around cables inserted into webbing or run through a garment. But this new etextile from intelligent textiles limited is woven from conductive yarns.

As you can, see the etextile is extremely versatile and can be adapted to a wide variety of applications. It is not an outer fabric but rather sandwiched in between layers like an insulation material would be.

A wide variety of low profile ports can be integrated into the design to accommodate different cables. They are placed whe they are needed and sandwich the etextile in order to connect to the integrated power and data grid allowing ports to do double duty.

These ports also mean you can hot swap power sources/batteries as well as devices. Additionally, the elimination of cables lowers snag hazards and improves heat dissipation as the power load is carried over a wider surface area. For you guys who are now terrified you will be electrocuted, relax, the fabric is insulated just like a cable.
