Canadian Forces – Improved Combat Uniform

Friday, July 8th, 2011

In the first redesign of the Combat Uniform since the 1950s, the transition to CADPAT now withstanding, the Canadian military is releasing the Improved Combat Uniform (fr. UNIFORME DE COMBAT AMÉLIORÉ (UCA)) beginning in 2012. This is not the introduction of a new uniform but rather an improvement of the existing issue item based on operational feedback.

The most striking change is that it becomes more ACU-like with 17 changes based on recent operational feedback. Production should commence in June 2012.

In particular, the ICU will incorporate these features:

•Mandarin Collar
•Flat Chest Pockets
•Pockets: Arms + pen pockets on sleeves
•Velcro attachment on sleeve cuffs
•No more draw strings
•Better fit
•Integrated kneepads (two models trialled: “green” and “grey”)

User acceptance trials and working group have already been completed with a design freeze anticipated for No Later Than 11 August. As this is planned as a rolling upgrade to the current pattern, fielding priorities will go to combat units and over time include the entire force.

There are two ironies at work here. The first is obviously that the uniform is becoming more ACU-like even as US Soldiers complain of the ACUs features. The second is that the uniform improvements won’t be fielded until Canadian combat troops have left Afghanistan.

One last thing I forgot to add. The CF Operational Clothing Team made it very clear that the uniform would remain in CADPAT and would NOT be MultiCam.

Mission Pac Adds Outer Garments

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Australian firm Mission Pac has added 100% Cotton Outer Garments to their line up of merino wool under garments.

Mission Pac has reminded me of these excellent properties of Cotton:
This natural fibre, like merino wool, provides increased breathability, increased comfort levels , and improved flash-over properties compared to poly-cotton and other synthetic fibres.

They are offering Patrol Shirts, Patrol Pants, Bush Hats, and a lightweight Smock designed loosely on the original SAS Smock in Auscam (DPCU), AustDesert (DPDU), Multi-Cam (MCP), Danish Desert, Tan and Navy Blue.

Editor’s Note: I LOVE 100% cotton ripstop! (remember jungle fatigues?) I LOATHE the craptastic 50/50 NYCO that the Army introduced in the early 90s for the “Enhanced” Hot Weather BDU. The NYCO was developed so that Soldiers could starch their uniforms and make them last longer. It was not introduced to enhance the comfort of the uniform in hot environments. But, just remember, cotton isn’t for EVERY environment. So, huzzah to Mission Pac for putting this together! You guys rock.

Crye to Develop New Camo Pattern for Australia

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Last Fall, Australian Minister for Defence Materiel Jason Clare announced that they would be adopting MultiCam uniforms for their troops deploying to Afghanistan. He also made mention of a deal in the works with Crye Precision to develop an Australia specific derivative similar to what Crye did for the UK when they produced Multi Terrain Pattern (MTP).

According to Defence Materiel Organisation chief executive Dr Stephen Gumley, the first 5000 sets of the new MultiCam uniforms are being issued to troops in Afghanistan. Australian SF have been using MultiCam for several years but this is a first for conventional Australian troops who most recently had been trialling a uniform in the so-called DPMU pattern based on the distinct Auscam pattern but with Afghanistan specific coloring.

Earlier today, BRIG Mike Phelps (Director General, Integrated Soldier Systems Division, Land Systems Division, Defence Materiel Organisation) announced that they had issued contracts with Crye in the amount of $US4.7 million for a license to manufacture in Australia and $US3.1 million for Crye to develop a uniquely Australian camouflage pattern. He went on to add that the first prototypes should be available in five weeks.

Milap – The New Indian Carbine

Monday, May 30th, 2011

In our article on the Indian Army’s Futuristic Infantry Soldier As a System (F-INSAS) we mentioned a new carbine that was on its way. It’s called Milap and according to a recent article in the Times of India, it should begin field trials soon. Named after the joint venture that developed it, the carbine comes from a collaboration between the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). There are reportedly 20 variants of the carbine with Defence sources claim the Milap will run about R50,000 per copy which is half of what an earlier consortium had quoted. We’re not too sure what is meant by 20 variants but we find it very interesting that the Indian Army is more interested in a carbine, more suited for CQB scenarios such as the Mumbai attacks rather than full length heavy caliber rifles for potential operations along the border with Pakistan.

Canada Chooses Brown Boots

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Despite experimenting with camouflaged boots, it seems that Canada has settled on Brown. To be more exact, they appear to be Brown full grain leather combined with Cordura upper with a Goodyear Welt and Vibram Sole. Notice they didn’t use any of that Norwegian welt nonsense.
