ArmorSource has integrated the new Sidewinder Powered Rail into their new helmet line.
The Sidewinder is the industry’s first powered helmet accessory platform. Designed, engineered, and patented by Kerry Harris, it is a product of A7 Tactical Systems, LLC.
The Sidewinder is designed to directly attach and power accessories such as cameras, high powered illumination devices, etc. These accessories can be used independently or together on either side of the helmet. The big advantage here is that accessories no longer require battery compartments. This means lighter weight and sleeker design as well as alleviating the need to swap out batteries for individual items. In fact, the Sidewinder features a single, hot swappable power cell.
These reactor power cells custom designed with a built in protection chip that prevents incidental or purposeful shorting of the system even when it is fully submerged. The Reactor power packs are lightweight, flat, weighs only a few ounces, and can be replaced in a matter of seconds without removing the helmet. The Reactor cells are fully rechargeable which reduces the hazmat issue associated with the disposal of standard AAA, AA, lithium, and other disposable cells.
Angel 7 has already designed several accessories including:
1. The A7 Tactical Illuminator (TIL) boasting 130 lumens at a mere 3 inches long and 29.4 grams. It offers 3 hrs usage time.
2. The A7 micro cam features one touch operation, 720dp, 5 hours usage time in a compact package.
3. Gunfighter combat goggles clip directly on to the Sidewinder platform. Angel 7 has leveraged work on aviation helmets to offer 4 different visor options including photochromic and LEP.
In addition to powered accessories, the Sidewinder is mil std 1913 so it will also accommodate traditional, non-powered items that fit on a Picatinny rail. And, the Picatinny compatibility is extremely important because Angel 7 has also developed a powered weapon rail that will be unveiled soon. This means, that for the first time, you will have compatibility between weapon and helmet, including power for your cameras, illuminators, lights and other accessories.
Of additional interest, Angel 7 has already produced Sidewinder variants in A-TACS, MultiCam and digital desert.
Coming soon from Adams Industries is this GoPro Mount for aviation helmets. It works on any flight helmet with ANVIS-compatible shroud.
For those of you that took a look at Ops-Core’s new 2012 catalog yesterday, you may have noticed an item called the SLAAP Plate. It is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing things I have seen in quite some time. Developed by Velocity Systems for use in conjunction with the Ops-Core FAST Ballistic Helmet, the Super Light Armor Applique Plate defeats 7.62 x 39mm FMJ with mild steel core penetrator. There’s no ether here about it stopping an unspecified .30 threat like some helmet programs out there. This piece of kit stops the most common threat you are going to face on the current battlefield. And, it is used in conjunction with a helmet that is seeing more and more widespread use; the Ops-Core FAST Ballistic Helmet.
Ops-Core SLAAP Plate by Velocity Systems
Mounting is a snap as it is as easy as adjusting the position and slapping into place via Velcro. The SLAAP Plate is also NVG compatible and includes a cutout and edge recess to accommodate the VAS shroud.
SLAAP Plates come in two sizes: Large (1.0 lbs) and Small (.85 lbs). Look for SLAAP Plates for additional helmet geometries soon. Available sized and in Tan, Green, Black, MultiCam and Desert MARPAT, the SLAAP Plate can be ordered from both Ops-Core and Velocity Systems.
Team Wendy has unveiled their new tactical bump helmet. Leveraging over a decade of ski and sport helmet development, they have combined this with their Zorbium foam padding technology to develop this new helmet.
It features an entirely new suspension/padding system that minimizes the use of foam. Instead the energy is dissipated through a combination of a crown sling and buckling zones. In fact, this helmet’s liner technology was developed specifically in support of Natick’s Heads Up program.
You may recognize the Boa Lacing System used to adjust the fit of this helmet. It’s a proven technology used in footwear that creates tensioning via a wire system.
This helmet currently integrates a Wilcox NVG shroud but Team Wendy plans on working with industry to further improve integration. You will also note the rail system that utilizes a sliding lock mechanism to secure devices.

Hot off the press, the 2012 Ops-Core catalog. There are several new items and we will be offering details soon. I spent an hour-and-a-half yesterday meeting with Ops-Core and I can tell you that things are well at hand at Ops-Core and they are hard at work fulfilling contracts as well as developing new personal protection technologies many of which, you will see in these pages.
I use both the hybrid helmet cover for my Ops-Core FAST Ballistic Helmet as well as the Helmet Hut to store it and its accessories. I recommend them both.
We’ve talked about the 3M Peltor ARC mount before, but this too good to pass up.
