High-Flying Extreme Mumfest

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

This is a pretty interesting article form our friends at Extreme Outfitters. They put quite a bit back into the community and sponsor some interesting causes. This report by ERIC STEINKOPFF details Extreme Outfitters sponsorship of the Flippenout Extreme Trampoline team.

NEW BERN, NC – The temperature rose to the mid 80-degree mark under a cloudless sky over the October 9-10 weekend for the 30th Annual Mumfest, but thousands still flocked to the downtown area to see what all the fuss was about.

More than 300 artists were featured along several closed-off city blocks, as well as concerts, car shows and daredevil demonstrations – that included the Extreme Outfitters-sponsored Flippenout Extreme Trampoline acrobatic performance at the Union Point Park waterfront where the scenic Neuse and Trent Rivers meet.
“New Bern is a terrific area and the Mumfest is a terrific festival – it’s a privilege to come back,” said Flippenout emcee and operations director Mike Kennedy. “We want to thank Extreme Outfitters for making that possible.”

Early Saturday and Sunday morning traffic was very light, as each day was just beginning to open its eyes and stretch for the festivities to come, but as the day wore on the crowd came to life in response to three young men flying over 25 feet in the air – complete with single, double and triple forward and back flips, spins, twists and gyrations up to and over a wall between the two trampolines.

The 2010 Mumfest gymnastic trampoline performance featured 2000 national champion Nathan Gibeault, 27; fourth-ranked U.S. national team finalist and Olympic hopeful Sean Kennedy, 22; and junior national finalist Eric Kennedy, 17, who is representing the United States at a November 2010 international teen competition in France.

The trio’s presentation included individual acts, followed by side-by-side synchronized performances on parallel trampolines to lively music, while wearing Extreme Outfitters exclusive Feelmax “barefoot” shoes that provide a unique combination of gentle touch, yet protecting the skin from cuts or abrasions. Other stunts added cumbersome skis with boots and even snowboards.

Kennedy said he was pleased with the event, the community and how the two Extreme teams worked together to present a positive message to the public. “We’re really happy how the weekend turned out,” Kennedy said. “You guys (at Extreme Outfitters) support the troops and the area has a strong military presence – with service members and their families.” “We like to encourage a healthy lifestyle, discipline and safe practices on the trampoline and we like to raise awareness about this Olympic gymnastic sport,” Kennedy said.

782 Gear’s New Look

Friday, November 12th, 2010

782 Gear just launched their new web presence and, in addition to the new streamlined look, they have also opened a web store. One of the features that we really like about the new storefront is that there is also a mobile version for those on their smartphone. We have received numerous inquiries from our readers asking where to purchase 782 Gear’s clothing which includes both FR and non-FR options. So guys, no excuses now.

782 Gear clothing is comfortable and functional. When you see many of their products the first thing that comes to mind will be, “I’ve seen that before.” But we can assure, not like this you haven’t. 782’s motto is ‘Tradition Meets Innovation’ and they have taken those military clothing and equipment designs you are familiar with and updated both construction and materials. Performance and comfort are both enhanced. 782 Gear offers Berry Compliant products with additional options for those who do not require American made.

Marine Corps Marathon Report

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Last week we mentioned we would be featuring a report on the Marine Corps Marathon, but it is important to note that there was more going on than just the Marathon. For example, Team Xtreme was also on hand to help our wounded warriors. We really appreciate this report by retired Devil Dog ERIC STEINKOPFF who is on the Extreme Outfitters Staff and provided us with this eye witness account.

WASHINGTON, DC – It was an uncharacteristically warm late October weekend when Extreme Outfitters ventured to our nation’s capital to support wounded warriors at the 35th annual running of the Marine Corps Marathon.

The staff arrived Friday, October 29, and met with the public, giving out free items and others at nominal charge, to visitors along Pennsylvania Avenue near the Marriott Hotel – all within sight of the Capital Building and the Washington Monument.

Saturday was busy as liberal comedians John Stewart and Stephen Colbert, dubbed “the founding fathers of fake news” by The Washington Post, held their Rally to Restore Sanity in large part as a response to conservative commentator Glenn Beck’s rally Restoring Honor on the national Mall just two months prior. But the real story was to wait until Halloween Day.

Bright and early race day Sunday, October 31st, runners gathered in the Rosslyn area of Arlington, Virginia, near the Iwo Jima memorial and the National Cemetery. There was nervous small talk as some tried to forget the pre-race anxieties and participants were dressed in sweats or sometimes plastic wrap or garbage bags – to capture their body heat before the impromptu wraps were deposited along the route.

Nearly 22,000 runners completed the marathon – with the first finishing in just under two and a half hours and the last just over eight hours. Extreme Outfitters sponsored employee Brian Parran, 27, ran his first marathon that day in under six hours, but doesn’t intend to stop there. “It was long, but a lot of fun,” Parran said. “It was great hanging out with the team. I’ll do it again next year.”

Some estimated guests in the area to be as high as 50,000, while more than 1,000 serious visitors came by the Extreme Outfitters booth on race day, obtaining discount cards, information on products and supporting wounded warriors with monetary donations.

Team Xtreme leader U.S. Marine Jeremy Soles wore a gas mask through the event, setting a new Guinness World Record of just under four and a half hours and dedicating his efforts to Marine Cpl. John Michael Peck, 24, who was the victim of a roadside bombing in Afghanistan last May that inured both arms and legs, leaving him a quadriplegic.

The entire Xtreme Team and supporting cast with Soles is from the Richmond, Virginia area and consisted of Jason Thompson, Rocky Motley, Benjamin Dyer and Nathan Huffman – all of whom successfully completed the grueling 26.2 mile course.

But Soles ran the race his own way to demonstrate the struggles that physically and mentally challenged warriors must endure every day as a result of injuries sustained from their service to our country. “We accept these challenges not for fame or fortune, but to represent those who face challenges far greater than running 26 miles in a gas mask,” Soles said. “We do it to represent and honor our wounded brothers and sisters in arms who would do the same for us. The mask symbolizes perseverance in the face of insurmountable odds and overcoming mental and physical obstacles.”

S.O. Tech Profiled in ‘Combat Tactics’

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

SSD sponsor S.O.Tech is profiled in an article in the latest issue of SureFire’s ‘Combat Tactics’ magazine. It presents an excellent history of S.O. Tech as well as an overview of some of their latest products. Published by Guns & Ammo, SureFire Presents ‘Combat Tactics’ is available on most news stands and also features articles Paul Howe, SureFire’s Total Signature Reduction Suppressors, the FN SCAR, Arc’teryx line of combat clothing, and an argument on why gas pistons ARs are so much hype as well as many others. It is well worth picking up.

Camouflage Improvement Industry Day Announced

Friday, November 5th, 2010

We have mentioned the Army’s Camo program many times over the last year. The fielding of MultiCam (OCP) was not the end but rather a way station on the road to a more comprehensive signature management solution. As part of Phase IV, the Army will host an Industry Day on 9 December at the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, Maryland. Then, they will solicit industry for a family of camouflage patterns. These will be assessed and the Army hopes to choose a new camouflage solution by FY13.

The U.S. Army Product Manager, Soldier Clothing and Individual Equipment (PM-SCIE) and Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) will be conducting a Camouflage Improvement industry day on 9 December 2010 (1000-1500, 0900 registration) at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland. The intent of this industry day is to allow the Army to open lines of communication as it relates to the sources sought that was released on 29 June 2010 (W911QYFAMILYOFCAMO), address areas of concern with current camouflage solutions, identify a path forward and timelines as they relate to potential camouflage changes, as well as clearly identify the process (i.e., testing, evaluation, etc.) that will be used in determining the solution that is in the best interest of the government.

The 29 June 2010 sources sought (W911QYFAMILYOFCAMO) was for a family of camouflage patterns. A family is considered to be of the same or similar geometry with coordinating color palettes to cross the global operating environments. Global operating environments are defined by a geographic classification system that subdivides the global landmasses into areas with similar environmental characteristics. Examples of these environments include but are not limited to: physiographic features such as arid and humid river plane, low and high relief mountains, plateau; land cover such as forest / full ground cover, shrub land / moderate ground cover, barren or sparse ground cover, cropland, snow and ice; and seasonal changes.

Interested organizations are asked to register prior to 24 November 2010. (See the actual solicitation for POC info.)

Subsequent to the close of this notice, the Government intends to solicit for and award multiple developmental contracts for the purposes of evaluating (via computer and field) a family of camouflage patterns. The developmental contracts will include a priced option for the Government to purchase the data rights to the family of camouflage patterns.

Blackwater Pro Shop Closed

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Back in June we mentioned the imminent opening of the Blackwater Pro Shop in Fayetteville, NC. Finally, there was a place where we could replace those worn out Blackwater T-shirts, but alas, no more. Cut down in its infancy, the Fayetteville Blackwater Pro Shop is closed. This week, while we were in town for SOFEX, we decided to drive by the Pro Shop and follow up on a tip we had received that the shop had closed its doors. Sure enough; out of business. Well, it was a good run, that is if you consider three months good. We always thought we’d stop by on our next visit. Hopefully someone local will buy the place which features an indoor range.

In early October, employees cleaned the place out. They even took down the sign. It looks like the Grinch came through the place. Poor Cindy Lou Who.

Thanks to Grey Group for the photos.
