Survival Equipment Pioneer Celebrates 40th Birthday

Friday, August 9th, 2019

Andrew Howell, the Managing Director of protective and survival equipment specialists, BCB International Ltd, celebrated with his family and BCB personnel his 40 years at the helm of the business.

Its equipment currently supports the British military as well as a number of foreign ministries of defence. It has been used in the Falklands, Mali and Afghanistan, among other places. The company, which stemmed from one man’s cough syrup has grown to now have over 70 employees across three sites in Wales.

BCB was originally founded in 1854 during the Crimean war, when Dr Brown supplied the troops with Brown’s Cough Bottle (BCB). The company was then taken over by a local chemist, Deryck Howell, in 1949. Forty years ago, his son, the current director of the company, decided to embark on international waters and set up BCB International Ltd.

“I set it up to design a new life raft first aid kit for Avon Inflatables in Llanelli. I thought it would take me 2 weeks; then I was going to go exploring the world,” tells Andrew Howell. “I am still to an extent redesigning the kit – and seeing the world,” he continues.   The energetic Managing Director shows no sign of slowing down. Meeting with international clients, Andrew Howell  regularly travel all around the world – in the past month alone, Andrew Howell and some of his team have  travelled to the Netherlands, Germany, Brunei, French Guiana and Iraq in addition to meeting with prominent political and business figures in the UK.

Andrew Howell’s belief in continuous innovation has led to the development of products such as an eco-friendly biofuel FireDragon, a first of its kind worldwide, a self- inflating body armour system or a non-lethal boat stopping system to aid in peace and security-keeping in marine environments.

Having recently moved to larger Headquarters, under Andrew Howell’s leadership, the company is extremely well positioned to serve its clients.

Specifically, Avon Rubber PLC, best known for their CBRN protective masks, will be purchasing 3M’s armor protection business which includes production of helmets and armor plates. It operates three sites within the US and has about 280 employees.

3M developed the Integrated Head Protection System for the US Army, it’s latest ground troop helmet. They also manufacture armor plates for military and law enforcement.

Avon sees that this move, “Significantly widens Avon Protection’s product range in the personal protective equipment segment with a leading brand for next generation ballistic helmets and body Armour,” as well as “Deepens our presence in the U.S. and relationship with the U.S. DOD as a key supplier of ballistic helmets and body armour for the Soldier Protection System (“SPS”).”

The acquisition should be complete by the first half of 2020.

Netline Supplies Its Counter IED System, the C-Guard Reactive Jamming ManPack, to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)

Tuesday, August 6th, 2019

The company has also been awarded a €65 million contract to supply its Vehicular C-Guard System to the Spanish MOD

August 5, 2019. Netline Communications Technologies Ltd. – a leading developer and manufacturer of high-end electronic warfare and spectrum dominance systems for defense forces and homeland security agencies – is supplying its C-Guard Reactive Jamming (RJ) Manpack system to the IDF. The system is already being operated by the IDF, and is also in ongoing use by ground forces in NATO countries, Asia and Africa.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), such as roadside bombs activated by radio-controlled devices (namely cell phones), have become a common threat in today’s asymmetric warfare, as they are easy to make. Netline’s reactive jamming system provides frontline forces with a real-time counter-IED solution.

Easily carried into the battlefield, the C-Guard RJ Manpack system detects and prevents IED activation attempts. The system creates a secured zone around the soldiers on the frontline, reacting to real-time situational electronic warfare (EW) threats by both detecting the threat and providing an immediate response of jamming RF signals that are attempting to detonate the IED. The solution’s advantages include superior reactive jamming capabilities, wide coverage, simple operation by an individual soldier to provide protection of personnel within a specific radius, and better overall control of the operational situation, all without requiring any additional hardware.

Netline has also recently secured a €65 million contract with the Spanish Ministry of Defense. In a show of confidence similar to the IDF’s, both in Netline and its advanced jamming capabilities, this is a major contract to supply the C-Guard RJ vehicle system for use in all military corps of the Spanish Armed Forces, due to begin in December 2019.

“We are proud that the IDF and the Spanish MOD have chosen our life-saving systems to protect their forces in a variety of operational missions,” says Yallon Bahat, CEO of Netline. “For us, this is further evidence that our strategic decision to invest in the development of high-end EW technologies is bearing fruit. We have succeeded in bringing the message of EW defensive measures to the ground tactical arena, and will continue to invest in advanced generations to provide solutions for future threats in this field.”

Meet Särmä Jorma, The Hunting Suit

Wednesday, July 31st, 2019

Something this cool could only come from our friends at Varusteleka Oy. Jorma is an ancient Finnish man’s name, pronounced with a strrrrong ‘r’. The English equivalent would be Dick or Johnson. This sums up the deal: straightforward, free of uselessness and solid as hell.

Completely rustle-free, silent and slightly resistant to rain (can be waxed for more water resistance).

The Jorma suit comprises of jacket and trousers, sold separately.

Offered in Finnish M05 Woodland or Bright Orange.

Designed in Finland, by hunters, for hunters.
