Seattle Police SWAT and King County (WA) Sheriff’s Office SWAT Adopt the B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. MAWL Laser Aiming System

Thursday, November 24th, 2016

November 21st, 2016 (Redmond, WA) – B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. Advanced Photonics, which specializes in laser systems for national defense, law enforcement, and aerospace is proud to announce that their Modular Advanced Weapon Laser (MAWL™) has been adopted as the new standard by both the Seattle Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), as well as the King County (WA) Sheriff’s Office Special Operations team.

These two teams provide tactical response services for over 2 million citizens in the greater Seattle area. Both SPD SWAT and KCSO SWAT explored multiple laser aiming systems before choosing the MAWL™ for their weapon pointing and illumination requirements in June 2016. The MAWL™ enables their SWAT officers to safely and effectively conduct high-risk tasks in complex low-light environments.

Officer Kirk Waldorf, Seattle Police SWAT Team R&D Lead said, “When my team decided to improve our night vision capabilities, we evaluated four of the best aiming devices available. The MAWL™ was without equal, and no other device offered the capabilities and functions of the B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. system. In the end, we decided not to compromise on quality or performance and chose the MAWL™ for the entire team.” Deputy Tony Mullinax, KCSO Special Operations said, “The MAWL™ has dramatically increased our ability to safely operate at night, allowing us to make better decisions about if and when to use force.”

As the first US law enforcement departments to adopt the MAWL™ using the FDA law enforcement variance for this system, the teams were trained on the advantages of the MAWL™ system by Presscheck Consulting and Tap-Rack Tactical, both of which provide specialized training in operating under night vision in tactical situations.

Matt Meyers, President of B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. said, “We’re excited that the first teams to adopt the MAWL™ are local law enforcement organizations that B.E. Meyers & Co., Inc. has had relationships with since our founding in 1974. Both Seattle PD and King County Sheriff’s Office SWAT are highly regarded professionals who display proficiency in tactical operations, and we are honored that they chose us to meet their equipment needs.”

Introducing New A-TACS LE-X

Thursday, October 6th, 2016

Last year A-TACS Camo introduced its A-TACS iX (Intermediate Xtreme) pattern as the central pattern in their “X” camo lineup. Later, they followed with the introduction of A-TACS AT-X, (Arctic Tundra Xtreme) which was quickly adopted by the Norwegian Special Forces. Now Digital Concealment Systems is releasing a new and enhanced version of their original Law Enforcement Pattern called A-TACS LE-X (Law Enforcement Xtreme).

Like the original A-TACS LE pattern, the new LE-X variant was developed primarily for use by Urban and Metropolitan SRT teams conducting low-light operations. The pattern is also suited to a wide range of other tactical military and law enforcement applications.

The Black, blue and grey coloration in A-TACS LE-X also works well with the black nylon gear utilized by many SRT personnel, which allows for easier integration into service.

In the coming weeks and months, new A-TACS LE-X will be introduced on a wide range of uniform and nylon gear options by a CORE group of A-TACS Camo brand partners including TRU-SPEC, Tactical Tailor, OPS Gear, Tactical Performance Corp. and others. Press releases and availability dates on specific product offerings will be forthcoming. For additional information, contact A-TACS Camo by e-mail at: info@a-tacs.com

Tactical Distributors – Thin Blue Line KCRF Shirts Raise Money for Spirit of Blue Foundation

Thursday, September 8th, 2016

We’ve recently seen some rough times in this country and unfortunately, members of the Law Enforcement community have given their lives in service. One of our biggest concerns here at SSD is that these men and women (and their K9 partners) have the equipment they need to protect their communities as well as themselves. Recently, Tactical Distributors approached us about doing a Thin Blue Line version of our popular Keep Calm Return Fire T-shirts to raise finds for a Law Enforcement charity.  We thought it was a great idea and suggested Spirit of Blue Foundation for the great work they do identifying and fulfilling capability gaps in smaller Law Enforcement Agencies.  Since 2011, this 501(c)(3) has awarded 42 grants valued at almost $200,000 in 22 states.

We only had one stipulation; our entire licensing fee had to go to Spirit of Blue.  The shirts look great and we are pleased to report that TD kicked in on their end as well.  $10.00 from the sale of each shirt will be donated to Spirit of Blue.

ADS Presents – Active Shooter Impact on Law Enforcement Response Training and Preparedness

Sunday, August 21st, 2016

Law Enforcement across the country have focused on planning for, and reacting to, Active Shooter events. ADS Inc has shared this blog entry with us to briefly discuss the scenario and to show some material solutions.

WHAT DEFINES AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION?

As it relates to law enforcement, an “active shooter” situation is described as one in which a shooting is in progress and typical law enforcement protocols may be affected in terms of methods used for responding to the incident. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the “active” aspect of the term implies both law enforcement and the bystander have the potential to affect the outcome based on their responses. (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2013) According to a study released by the FBI in 2013, Law enforcement and an active shooter exchanged gunfire upon their arrival to the scene in 45 out of the 160 active shooter situations throughout 2000 – 2013.

Nearly half of the shooter involved officer deaths in this study were due to being under fire in open spaces and having little training or knowledge of how to respond or protect themselves. According to Greg Ellifritz, President of Active Response Training (Follow his blog), this study revealed the importance for law enforcement to undergo additional training similar to that of military tactics such as “bounding overwatch.” (Ellifritz 2014)

The new FBI study of 2014 and 2015 active shooter incidents was released just three days after the Orlando nightclub shooting (omitting the statistics from this incident). There were a reported 40 active shooter incidents throughout the 2014 to 2015 time period.

Of the 40 incidents, more than half (26) ended with law enforcement at the scene; 14 incidents ended in both gunfire exchange with law enforcement and the shooter being killed, while 12 others resulted in the shooter being apprehended. This is a dramatic difference from the FBI’s 2000 – 2013 study that revealed more than half (90) of the 160 active shooter situations ended on the shooter’s initiative with the shooter committing suicide, ceasing to shoot or fleeing the scene. (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2016)

Although these frightening statistics (see Diagram A) are hard to comprehend, they show a strong trend towards improving the way our law enforcement are educated and protected in responding to active shooter situations.

ADS’s INVOLVEMENT:
PROTECTING YOU SO YOU CAN PROTECT OTHERS

In response to the growing number of ballistic threats to Law Enforcement, and the government’s effort to create awareness around active shooter situations, ADS has worked with reliable tactical & body armor manufacturers, LBT and Custom Armor Group (CAG), to develop a custom packaged solution.

ADS is proud to offer affordable ballistic protective equipment for law enforcement officers that is light weight, NIJ06 certified and available to ship immediately. ADS’s easy and affordable solution is the ballistic protection your department needs at a fraction of the cost.
