Princeton Tec in MultiCam at Extreme Outfitters

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

BY ERIC STEINKOPFF
EXTREME OUTFITTERS STAFF

In the same tradition as three wise men following a star well into the night, U.S. and allied troops now have a chance to see the light as they deploy far away from home during the holidays.

From the same folks who brought the first initial U.S. shipment of Blackhawk! packs and pouches in the new MultiCam pattern, Extreme Outfitters is now offering Tan Princeton Tec headlamps with headbands also in the new MultiCam print.

Patrons at their Brynn Marr Shopping Center location on Western Boulevard and those who are finding their way to the website at www.tacticaledge.com, are taking advantage of the limited-time-offer discount of 25 percent off retail for the popular Remix, EOS Tactical and Quad Tactical models.

“They’re nice and bright,” said active duty Marine Derek Paquin. “They’re easy to use for multiple purposes.”
The Quad Tactical model has a wide beam to highlight the immediate area up to 35 meters away on the brightest of four settings.

The EOS Tactical model has a narrower beam to spotlight greater distances up to 54 meters on the brightest of four settings.

Both tactical models are waterproof to about three feet, have interchangeable blue, green and red lenses and take three included AAA batteries that power four settings of low, medium, high and flash modes.

The Remix model headlamp features three single-color LEDs, either red or green or blue or infrared, next to a larger white maxbright LED both with separate high and low settings powered by the included CR123 three-volt light.

The new headlamps just arrived over the Christmas weekend, but are only available while supplies last.
“They’re probably one of our top-selling headlamps,” said Extreme Outfitters purchasing manager Zakk Plocica. “They’ll go fast.”

Icon Lights

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Designed by legendary flashlight designer Paul Kim (PK), Icon lights are at once elegant in design, yet tough enough to take a beating. For those of you unfamiliar with PK, he is the design genius behind SureFire’s success. In fact, he has a cult-like following in his home of Korea. Having spent some time speaking with him, we can definitely see Icon as the perfect creative outlet for him.

No, Icon Lights aren’t tactical but they are performance products, and are a great option for Every Day Carry. In fact, they are perfect for the crowd that demands performance but doesn’t want to look like a mall ninja. Plus, they make great gifts for the folks in your life who want to abscond with your duty lights. With Icon, they will get the performance in a package that fits in a bit more with the suburban lifestyle. Regardless of model, Icon Lights share a couple of common features: Innovative design elements and the use of LEDs combined with the latest lens technology (TIR) to maximize performance.

While there is an entire line up of handheld lights and headlamps now available, our favorite is the Link. It’s aluminum body features an integrated carabiner clip so it will always be handy whether carrying your keys or attached to a day pack. Powered by a single AA battery, it will produce 50 lumens for 3 hours or 6 lumens for 70 hours. Power settings are determined by the “clickie” tailcap switch. We picked one up and it proved so popular here at the home office that it was claimed for use the first day and we can’t get it back!

Icon Lights caught on early with the candle power crowd and continue to grow in popularity as they increase in availability. In fact, they are beginning to show up places you would have never expected such as Radio Shack and regional test marketing in a couple of big box outlets.

First-Light USA’s AMP Admin/Medical Pouch ADS

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

First-Light USA’s AMP (Admin/Medical Pouch) increases lighting versatility for Combat Medics and other soldiers who are currently using their Tomahawk Tactical Light in conjunction with their MOLLE vest. The pouch allows the Tomahawk to be positioned on the Soldier’s chest by providing a mounting surface for First-Light’s MOLLE Tactical Retention System (TRS). This eliminates the need to wear body armor in training scenarios, as well as a myriad of other scenarios, in order to utilize the hands free functionality of the Tomahawk. When body armor is required, the straps on the AMP can removed and it can be attached directly to the PALS webbing, and used as a standard admin pouch. In addition to providing a mounting surface for the Tomahawk with TRS, essential equipment, such as writing tools, notepads, bandages, medications, etc. can be stowed within the pouch for easy access. The AMP is made in the USA by Tyr Tactical and constructed of 500D Cordura Nylon with ample exposed loop Velcro on the flap and front surface for attaching identification patches. Fully adjustable and fast-connecting straps and buckles allow for quick fitting of the pouch for all sized Soldiers.

The AMP and other First-Light products can be seen next at the SOMA (Special Operations Medical Association) Conference in Tampa, December 10 – 12. They’ll also be at the SMA Nominative Conference at Ft Bliss, January 10 – 12 and SHOT Show in Vegas, January 18 – 21. Additionally, the entire First-Light line is available for agency purchase from ADS.

SureFire Wins USSOCOM VBL-H & VBL-III Contracts

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Early this year, Naval Surface Warfare Center – Crane released a solicitation for a new generation of Very Bright Lights. Several companies answered the call and Crane has awarded contracts to SureFire for their HellFighter, M620V Scout Light®, and the M720V RAIDâ„¢ that we wrote about at SHOT Show 2010. Two types of Very bright Lights were selected. The VBL-H (visible bright light heavy) and VBL-III. Both contracts are Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity.

The VBL-H contract is for $16.6 million and will field the HellFighter as a heavy weapons light. The HellFighter is no stranger to SOF troops and models were purchased under a similar contract a few years back. It is designed for use with weapons such as the the M2, illuminating out to over 800 yards. It’s also been used for IED detection. This unit is specific to the needs of the Department of the Navy and is technically the fourth variant. Variants II and III are being tested by other branches of the United States Military.

The VBL-III contract is valued at $14.9 million contract, fielding personal weapon lights for members of USSOCOM. The two light that were chosen feature LED lamps that provide both white and IR light. To choose one or the other the user simply pulls out and twists the head to switch between the modes. The RAID also features additional functionality as you can see on the photo.

First Light USA’S Tac Med Lights ADS

Monday, November 1st, 2010

First Light USA’s new Tomahawk TC3 Kit for Combat Medics features a proprietary mix of Red and Green LEDs that “highlight” blood. Unfortunately in the aftermath of IED attacks and vehicle wrecks, medics find that they trouble distinguishing blood from other fluids such as petroleum products. After much experimentation First Light found the perfect mix of lights to make blood stand out from other colored fluids. For example, red light makes blood all but disappear and blue light turns blood black making it indistinguishable from oil.

Along with the red and green mix, the main light also has six IR LEDs that have 3 brightness settings and operate in a separate mode than any of the visible lights. The main white light is a 120 lumen LED that also has 3 brightness settings. Another new feature of the TC3 Kit is the TTL (Tomahawk Task Light) built into the battery cap. It’s a single 5 mm LED available in either Blue or UV. The Blue LED works great for Flourescein eye stain tests. The UV option is a 375 nm LED that can be used to fluoresce certain fungal and bacterial infections and eliminates the need for a medic to carry a bulky and fragile Wood’s Lamp.

I know this is going to sound like one of those Ginsu knife commercials but really, this light combines four different lights into one. You can also attach the TC3 on to a plate carrier with the included MOLLE TRS Mount. The TRS positions the light horizontally on the chest and allows the light to be directed up or down nearly 180 degrees meaning hands-free use while keeping the light off the helmet or head. The Tomahawk, when detached from the TRS mount can be used as a hand-held light, and the angle head design is easier to wield than a standard “tube” light when used in conjunction with small arms.

Energizer Helmet Light Now Offered with Red Lens

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Energizer’s popular Hardcase tactical helmet light is now offered with a red lens. I know that sounds odd to some of you old school guys who cut your teeth on red lenses but they played havoc reading the contour lines of maps, so many companies, Energizer included, switched over to a blue green color that was more map friendly. In the interim, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency altered the colors on mapping products just slightly so that they would be red light readable. The rest is history.

Additionally, Energizer has upgraded the MOLLE mount for the helmet light so if you were an early adopter, Energizer wants to give you one of the new mounts. Visit www.energizerlightingproducts.com.
