The Leaf- Chronical Presents – VETERANS: Parachutists have special evidence for claims

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Normally, I wouldn’t link to an article from a site owned by Gannett, but this op-ed is some good advice for US military Veterans who are seeking VA compensation for injuries arising from parachute duties. I served on jump status in both the Army and Air Force and the AF took it much more seriously from a medical viewpoint because parachutist duties were considered flight status. Consequently, parachutist were more likely to hide or at least downplay medical conditions in order to remain in status. After a career, they take their toll. If you’re in the same boat, this article by Sandy Britt For The Leaf-Chronicle is worth the read.

Many veterans who were on jump status avoided going to sick call while on active duty so as not to be taken off of jump status, or because it was frowned upon by their command….For example, veterans who were on jump status and earned one of the parachutist badges have concrete evidence of the number of jumps they completed. It’s a known medical fact that parachuting puts abnormal, traumatic pressure on joints, especially knees, feet, ankles, hips and spine, and as a result, chronic joint disabilities usually follow….read the rest at www.theleafchronicle.com/story/news/2016/07/16/veterans-parachutists-special-evidence-claims.

Para’kito Misquito Repellent

Monday, August 22nd, 2016

We checked out Para’kito misquito repellent at the recent Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City.

While they offer several products, we were particularly interested in their DEET-free bands. Rather than the chemicals we are used to seeing, Para’kito relies on essential oils whixh gibe off a slight smell of lemon, kind of like a cintronella candle.

It’s a good alternative for those of you who don’t want to use DEET and the refillable inserts for the bands are intended to last 14 days each. Also offered as a clip which can be hung from your gear, either way, they offer a spehere of protection that doesn’t extend much beyond your personal space.

ADS Presents – Active Shooter Impact on Law Enforcement Response Training and Preparedness

Sunday, August 21st, 2016

Law Enforcement across the country have focused on planning for, and reacting to, Active Shooter events. ADS Inc has shared this blog entry with us to briefly discuss the scenario and to show some material solutions.

WHAT DEFINES AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION?

As it relates to law enforcement, an “active shooter” situation is described as one in which a shooting is in progress and typical law enforcement protocols may be affected in terms of methods used for responding to the incident. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the “active” aspect of the term implies both law enforcement and the bystander have the potential to affect the outcome based on their responses. (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2013) According to a study released by the FBI in 2013, Law enforcement and an active shooter exchanged gunfire upon their arrival to the scene in 45 out of the 160 active shooter situations throughout 2000 – 2013.

Nearly half of the shooter involved officer deaths in this study were due to being under fire in open spaces and having little training or knowledge of how to respond or protect themselves. According to Greg Ellifritz, President of Active Response Training (Follow his blog), this study revealed the importance for law enforcement to undergo additional training similar to that of military tactics such as “bounding overwatch.” (Ellifritz 2014)

The new FBI study of 2014 and 2015 active shooter incidents was released just three days after the Orlando nightclub shooting (omitting the statistics from this incident). There were a reported 40 active shooter incidents throughout the 2014 to 2015 time period.

Of the 40 incidents, more than half (26) ended with law enforcement at the scene; 14 incidents ended in both gunfire exchange with law enforcement and the shooter being killed, while 12 others resulted in the shooter being apprehended. This is a dramatic difference from the FBI’s 2000 – 2013 study that revealed more than half (90) of the 160 active shooter situations ended on the shooter’s initiative with the shooter committing suicide, ceasing to shoot or fleeing the scene. (Federal Bureau of Investigation 2016)

Although these frightening statistics (see Diagram A) are hard to comprehend, they show a strong trend towards improving the way our law enforcement are educated and protected in responding to active shooter situations.

ADS’s INVOLVEMENT:

Provider of temperature-controlled packaging solutions unveils Golden Hour™ Medic, a small-scale thermal container for military personnel

August 16, 2016 02:45 PM Eastern Daylight Time

MINNEAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Pelican BioThermal, a global leader providing the broadest and most innovative range of temperature-controlled packaging solutions serving the life sciences industry, today launches the Golden Hour™ Medic, a critical care transport container. This packaging solution allows military personnel to carry life-saving whole blood with them onto the battlefield, which vehicles may not be able to easily reach in the critical first hour after a soldier sustains a life-threatening injury.

“The Golden Hour Medic is the result of our long-standing effort to identify and develop solutions for military field personnel; it supports the need to transport whole blood units far distances while still successfully maintaining blood at the critical temperature around 4 °C,” said Pelican BioThermal Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Kevin Lawler. “We are proud to officially launch the Golden Hour Medic and look forward to playing a pivotal role in the effort to save the lives of troops.”

Utilizing the same innovative technology as their award-winning Golden Hour™ Mobile container, the Golden Hour Medic is a reusable, portable container designed specifically for combat medics to transport blood and other lifesaving materials. The Medic can keep whole blood supplies at the required temperature for 24 hours in harsh conditions and up to three days in standard environments.

Maintaining critical blood supplies is an integral part of Pelican BioThermal’s historical product history. The company’s award-winning Golden Hour™ Technology was developed to protect the lives of military personnel on the frontlines by providing smaller-scale thermal containers for blood supplies. Later came the Golden Hour Mobile Container. It was developed shortly after 9/11 to protect military troops’ lives in the battlefield in the harshest of environments and climates. In 2004 the original container was the winner of the ‘Army’s Greatest Invention Award.’

Today, Pelican BioThermal provides a full range of single-use and reusable temperature-controlled packaging options that ensure the integrity of mobile blood supplies and inventories for blood banks, hospitals, EMT personnel, and first responders alike. MATBOCK Monday || Backdraft Medical

Monday, August 15th, 2016

Developed in coordination with some of the leading medics and combat first responders, the MATBOCK Backdraft is for small teams with relatively quick access to higher levels of care.

The unit mounts on the back of the plate carrier via MOLLE and is split into 2 separate removable pouches that are held in place via Velcro.

The unit was designed to split medical equipment between bleeding and airway and is run in this setup by different units.

The bottom of each pouch is attached to an adjustable lanyard that connects to the side panel of the plate carrier. When the operator requires the contents of one of the pouches, he or she simply pulls the lanyard, releasing that pouch.

The pack does not come equipped with any medical supplies as this time and is not limited to medical purposes only, but was initially designed for the medic. The back panel of the unit and the pouches is Tegris to give them rigidity and the pouches are made of MATBOCK’s extremely lightweight and strong Ghost Lite. Additionally, because the material is completely waterproof, the contents of the bag will remain protected from the environments.
