Berserkr Games Carbine Challenge

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

The Berserkr Games Carbine Challenge is an entirely new twist on the mud run. Consisting of 14 plus miles of obstacles to include mud pits, walls, stairs, rope traverse, and many more, there will be 8 shooting stations encountered throughout the course. Shooters will be required to carry a carbine only. Magazines and ammunition will be staged at the shooting areas.

Carbines may have iron sights only. No powered optics of any kind.

The course will have a staggered start and ranking will be a combination of accuracy and speed through the course.

All shots will be between muzzle contact and 285 yards. Expect paper close and steel at distance.

Water will be supplied throughout the course, so hydration gear is not required. This can be run in PT gear with your carbine.

The cost for the event is $150 per person. This will include the match, t-shirt, and barbecue at the end of the day. Prizes are cash payout. While some sponsors will be onsite, do not expect a large prize table. This is not that kind of match. In fact, it would be hard to call this a match at all. This is more of a physical, mental and equipment challenge.

October 26th, 2013 at Rifles Only. Contact Jacob Bynum at 361-522-4165 for more information.

Rifles Only also sponsors the more traditional mud run version of the Berserkr Games.

The Cogburn CB4

Monday, August 19th, 2013

If you’re familiar with Surly fat bikes then you’ll know their parent brand Quality Bicycle Products who has launched yet another brand, Cogburn Outdoors. Cogburn’s CB4 debuts in September.

Designed specifically for the outdoorsman, the CB4 (in no way related to the 1993 hip hop comedy of the same name) boasts a Realtree Xtra Camo frame (courtesy of Kansas City’s Dynamic Finishes) with the rims, handlebar, crank and other components in an anodized Black with a no-glare finish. Available in two different frame sizes for all riders.

It’s a fat bike with 3.8″ tires that will get you where you are going in the back country even with a heavy load. What’s more, it’s a bike, so it’s going to be quieter and leave a much lower impact than an ATV. It incorporates a Shimano Deore 20 speed mountain drivetrain with quiet Deore Shadow plus clutch rear derailleur.

“We make gear for people looking to hunt, fish and forage in remote places.”
-Cogburn Outdoors

It is designed, finshed and assembled in the USA.

I love everything about this bike, except the price. At $2199 it’s a bit more than I want to spend but I know there are many that will look at this price as reasonable. It’s all about the value exchange. I’m just not the guy who is willing to pay that much for a bike. What may be an option for those of us interested in adapting other Fat Bikes to a hunting role is the availability of Cogburn’s Scabbard which comes standard on the CB4. It attaches to a rear rack on any bike and is designed to accommodate archery equipment as well as hunting and fishing equipment.

Outdoor Retailer – Buck Knives

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

The 941 Travelmate Kit caught my eye awhile back on Amazon and I was glad to finally get a chance to take a look at it. It is a three component system that includes a spreader knife with integrated serrations on the wide blade. It can cut a tomato or spread peanut butter. As Stephanie Young, Buck’s marketing manager said, “It slices dices, cuts and serves.” The handles are made from Dishwasher safe Paperstone handles that are made of up of 100% recycled paper.

The Fork incorporates Can opener, Bottle opener and Scraping tool for grill or stove. Finally, the molded Sheath incorporates about $3 worth of microbial silver nitride to help ensure your utensils aren’t a breeding ground for gunk.

Hunting mule deer is one thing; hunting mule deer using a bow with howling winds in the Sandhills of Nebraska is something entirely different. Luckily for active duty Navy SEAL, Master Chief Ron Bellan and the rest of the Reaper Outdoors team they had Camo Form® to help them accomplish their mission.

Reaper Outdoors is the team behind the hit television series, “Survive The Hunt,” the first tactical/ hunting show. Recently Camo Form by McNett® Tactical sponsored a mule deer hunt with the Reaper Team on an episode titled, “Operation Camo Form.” Despite cold, harsh and windy conditions, they managed to land a mule deer with the help of Camo Form.

“We’re wrapping anything and everything we can think of,” said Bellan. “We’re using it and have been using it for a long time. We believe in this product. It’s Reaper tested, Reaper approved.”

Camo Form is the only reusable camouflage wrap that will not leave a sticky residue when removed. Unlike camouflage tapes, Camo Form adheres to itself as it is wrapped around the object. Camo Form helps conceal weapons, blinds and outdoor gear, adds grip, quiets clanking objects and helps with noise dampening. In addition, the heavy-duty fabric can be washed and re-used many times over. With 14 traditional and digital camo patterns, Camo Form offers on-the-fly concealment no matter what the environment.
