Tasmanian Tiger – Tac Modular Pack 30 Vent

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

New for 2017 is the TT Tac Modular Pack 30 Vent exhibited earlier this month at Enforce Tac and IWA.

This 30 liter pack is made from 700D Cordura and features a 3/4 length zipper, allowing the upper compartment to be opened fully. There is also a lower compartment, accessible via a half moon zipper. Additionally, there is a laser cut PALs webbing field on the rear flap and softshell pockets on either side of the bag. The top of the rear flap incorporates a zippered pocket and also offers elastic cord for quick, external storage.

The ventilated X Vent Zero Plus carrying system is quite interesting. Some outdoor packs offer similar suspensions but use a full mesh packpanel. TT has opened the back up because the additional material doesn’t really bear the load and just makes the wearer sweat more.

I like the two-tone version seen above, but a Dark Grey model called Carbon was seen at IWA the following day (below). There is said to be a Black model as well.

ONE299 Frame

Monday, March 13th, 2017

At the recent IWA in Germany, I noticed that Polish brand Direct Action was experimenting with ADA’s ONE299 pack frame from Australia. I had previously mentioned it during SHOT Show 16, so it was great to see it getting out there.

The concept behind this expandable, polymer frame is that it is designed to accommodate the 1st through 99th percentile Soldier. Via five length configurations, the frame will telescope from 413 to 528mm.

There are multiple attachment points throughout the frame to accept various packs and suspension systems.

Helikon-Tex – Matilda Backpack

Monday, March 13th, 2017

At IWA this pack from Helikon-Tex caught my eye, reminding me of an ALICE Medium, with its three external pockets. Called the Matilda, it’s part of their growing Bushcraft line and was designed in conjunction with Survival Tech. Like ALICE, each of those external pockets has a back channel so you can carry odd-sized items. Unlike ALICE, the Matilda’s pockets are all closed with Side Release buckles. In addition to compression straps, the pack also offers PALS compatibility. The back is stiffened and incorprates breathable mesh.

IWA – Karrimor SF Manufacturing Danish Army Packs

Sunday, March 5th, 2017

British pack company Karrimor SF displayed three packs they are building for the Danish Army. While the samples were in various colors, the issue items are all MultiCam. Additionally, all three are PALS compatible and the Odin features a removable hibpbelt and interface to work with TYR Tactical’s Brokos Belt and Pico carrier which are both issued to Danish forces.

Odin

Odin is a 75 liter pack with a single main compartment accessible via a 3/4 zip. The main compartment can be sectioned off for carriage of a sleeping bag and there is a half moon sleeping bag compartment opening to access it. Additionally, the Odin offers a beavertail panel for the external carriage of helmets or jackets. There is also internal PALs webbing to attach radios.

Thor

Thor is a 40 liter patrol pack with a 3/4 zip access to its main compartment. There is an additional pocket with zipper access in the lid. Internal PALs allows radio carriage.

Loki

Loki works as a load hauler for items such as water jugs or Pelican cases. Additionally, a wide range of equipmeng can be attached via the large PALs field.

Lowe Vector Catalog

Tuesday, February 21st, 2017

From the late 1970s until the early 1990s, Lowe Alpine Systems offered a military line of packs called Vector. I owned a Woodland LCS-85 pack which is similar to the LCS-84 seen here, but I had also used an OD LOCO at 3ID LRS. LOCOs are rarely found with the rappelling harness as those were used long after the packs were discarded. These are pages from their catalog from the mid-80s.

“In 1978 in response to their experience in the U.S. Special Forces, Greg and Mike Lowe began designing to the needs of the U.S. Army and Marines as well as search and rescue organizations. Today, based on wide ranging input from outdoorsmen, hunters, rescue groups, SWAT teams and the military, Vector has become the leader in backpack design and innovation.”
