Eurosatory 2024: Caracal Airborne Platform Demonstrates High Mobility with Synthetic Fuel

The Caracal platform, a pathbreaking outcome of cooperation between Rheinmetall, Mercedes Benz AG and ACS – Armoured Car Systems, has proven to be a pioneering answer to the demands of modern military mobility. From 17 June 2024, the Caracal will be demonstrating its high agility twice a day in the Demonstration Area at Eurosatory 2024, even in difficult terrain. It will be using a new synthetic fuel generated from hydrogen, CO2 and electricity for military use.

Rheinmetall is cooperating with its technology partner INERATEC on this Giga-PtX project vision for a war-ready energy supply with synthetic fuels. Trade journalists will be able to view this demonstration in the Demonstration Area on 16 June 2024. Furthermore, at Rheinmetall’s Eurosatory 2024 stand a Caracal variant fitted with a launcher for Hero-120 loitering ammunition is on show.

The Caracal is also proving successful on the market. After winning a joint order from Germany and the Netherlands for up to 3,058 vehicles, another important contract came as part of Germany’s efforts to aid Ukraine. A total of 20 units of the Caracal, based on stocks of the G-model 461 series, have been delivered as an immediate requirement for the special forces since spring 2024 after just a few months of production. This has sparked interest not only at home but also internationally.

A showpiece of military innovation, the Caracal draws not only on tried-and-tested technologies, but also embodies advanced elements regarding tactics, safety and performance. While for Germany and the Netherlands joint interoperability and the Caracal’s airtransportability in the STH CH-47 Chinook helicopter were decisive design features, the Ukrainian Caracal will deliver maximum land mobility, giving Ukrainian special forces units a critical tactical edge. Incoming orders from Germany, the Netherlands and now Ukraine highlight the global relevance of this binational partnership and its contribution to international security.

Close cooperation between Rheinmetall, Mercedes Benz AG and ACS has resulted not only in a cutting-edge military vehicle, but also in a strategic alliance that bundles the individual strengths of the partners: the Caracal combines a high-performance, large-production run platform – the Mercedes military G class 464 series – with a modular, industrial scalable build-on from ACS. Rheinmetall is in charge of final assembly of the role-specific military mission kits, drawing on its ability to produce customized products on a large scale in relevant customer countries, as well as providing long-term logistical support throughout the entire product lifecycle.

The Caracal platform not only assures maximum mobility on the ground and in the air. It also enables integration of ballistic protection, various weapon systems and technologies, as well as state-of-the-art reconnaissance and communication equipment – critical elements in the modern battlespace.

Dark Systems Defense Unveiled its New K9 Lighstick Dropper at Eurosatory 2024

Pending patent Lightstick dropper represents a significant advancement in tactical and search-and-rescue operations, offering an innovative solution for marking and tracking in various environments. Mounted on a dog’s vest, these devices serve as essential tools for handlers who rely on their canine partners to navigate challenging terrains and critical situations. The primary function of the Dark Systems K9 Lightstick Dropper is to deploy lightsticks—small, self-contained sources of illumination that can be seen from considerable distances.

Thermoteknix Unveils ClipIR-12 – Latest in Thermal Fusion Technology – at Eurosatory 2024

Milrem Robotics’ Combat UGVs Flood Eurosatory 2024

Milrem Robotics, the world-leading robotics and autonomous systems developer, together with world-renowned weapon systems providers, showcases a variety of weaponised unmanned combat vehicles at Eurosatory 2024, demonstrating the versatility of its market-leading UGV the THeMIS.

From the eight THeMIS UGVs demonstrated at Eurosatory 2024, taking place from June 17 until June 21, in Paris, France, four are equipped with weapon systems provided by top of their class technology providers: KONGSBERG, Thales, Leonardo and FN Herstal.

“THeMIS Combat UGVs make up the forward line of robotic systems (FLOR) that ensures first contact will be made without blood. This allows the commanders to enter high-threat situations to identify and engage known or perceived threats before human intervention,” explained Patrick Shepherd, Chief Sales Officer at Milrem Robotics.

The newest addition to the preferred platform for weapon systems integrations – the THeMIS – is the FZ602 2-tube rocket launcher by Thales Belgium. It is showcased together with KONGSBERG’s PROTECTOR RS4, the world’s most fielded Remote Weapon System.

Additionally, KONGSBERG will showcase a THeMIS Combat with their PROTECTOR RS6, which features the powerful M230 LF 30mm cannon.

Announced in October 2023, but publicly displayed for the first time is the THeMIS with the HITROLE® Light Remote Weapon Station (RWS), one of the land turrets developed by Leonardo

“Since the enemy cannot allow unmanned combat vehicles freedom of movement, they force them to reveal their positions by engaging the robotic system. By destroying the first line of enemy key assets and creating a hole in the enemy’s defensive or offensive posture, THeMIS Combat UGVs enhance the effectiveness of manned assets by creating momentum that human troops can leverage with fewer casualties,” Shepherd added.

Exhibited with Thales, the THeMIS Observe UGV intended for ISR features the deFNder® Light of FN Herstal’s RWS family. It can integrate all FN Herstal machine guns up to 7.62mm calibre.

Eurosatory 2024: Avon Protection’s MCM100 Underwater Rebreather chosen by New Zealand Defence Force

The order expands the MCM100’s deployment among NATO nations

MELKSHAM, ENGLAND, June 17th, 2024: Avon Protection, the leader in innovative underwater and CBRN protective equipment, is pleased to announce that its MCM100 Multi-Role Rebreather has been selected by the New Zealand Defence Force to equip its navy divers. This significant contract includes the supply of MCM100 systems, spares and accessories, and a multi-year support programme.

Initially developed and deployed with global militaries and specialist user groups, the MCM100 delivers enhanced diver safety and extended mission duration for military divers across the spectrum of shallow and deep-water diving operations; including explosive ordinance disposal (EOD), mine-countermeasures (MCM), Special Forces, covert subsurface infiltration, submarine release & infiltration, and manned underwater vehicle operations.

The electronically controlled, closed-circuit MCM100 uses advanced digital oxygen sensors and a native decompression algorithm to manage the oxygen and decompression risk. System and mission information is fed to the diver via a wrist or console-mounted handset display and a heads-up display, maximising system useability and allowing the user to focus on the mission rather than the equipment. Additionally, automated pre-dive sequencing reduces mission readiness time and enhances safety.

The MCM100’s modular design ensures a future-proofed capability for the underwater operator, providing users flexibility in how and when they integrate new technologies as they become available or as their mission envelope changes.

“In selecting the MCM100 Multi-Role Rebreather, the New Zealand Defence Force is equipping its military divers with world-leading technology to enhance the safety and effectiveness of their increasingly diverse operations,” said Kevin Gurr, Avon Protection’s Underwater Systems Director. “We look forward to working with the New Zealand Defence Force as this system enters service and we continue to support their operations over the coming years.”

New Zealand joins a user community that includes other key NATO nations and partner navies.

Laser Light Module: Rheinmetall’s New Pistol Tactical Aiming Laser at Eurosatory 2024

Rheinmetall is showcasing its new “Pistol Tactical Aiming Laser” laser light module at Eurosatory 2024. Made by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics in Stockach on Lake Constance, the Pistol Tactical Aiming Laser (LLM-PTAL) is a compact lightweight build-on module specially designed for handguns.

For target illumination, an infrared close-range illuminator and white light are available to the operator for use in all operational situations.

In addition, the LLM-PTAL is equipped with an IR aiming laser and a visible (selectable red or green) aiming laser, integrated next to each other in a laser block.

Despite its compact dimensions (L/W/H 76 x 45 x 30 mm) and low weight of just 115 g, the newly developed module produces a powerful laser output of up to laser class 3B, permanently controlled via a monitor diode and electronically regulated. The build-on module features a dongle interface for an eye-safe training mode and effective force-on-force training.

Besides ergonomic, two-handed fingertip operability, the module can be attached to the weapon in various ways and can be adapted to different holster types. The single CR123 battery can be exchanged via the lamp head when the module is mounted.

Furthermore, the device offers the great advantage of not being subject to America’s strict ITAR export regulations.

Along with other Rheinmetall products, the LLM-PTAL is on view at Stand E115/F115 at Eurosatory 2024.
