Australia Defence Extends NIOA Strategic Munitions Deed

Friday, June 9th, 2023

NIOA is set to provide the Australian Defence Force with key munitions options well into the second half of this decade, shoring up supplies against growing international supply chain pressure and responding to priorities identified in the Defence Strategic Review (DSR).

NIOA Australia and New Zealand CEO Ben James has welcomed Defence’s decision to extend the Major Munitions Deed (MMD) by five years.

Under the MMD, the Australian-owned prime is able to deliver more than 50 different munitions to the ADF, including small calibre ammunition, 40mm products, 120mm tank ammunition, aircraft decoy flares, smoke and 30mm ammunition providing options for purchase.

The MMD was established as a five-year, wide-ranging and flexible munitions standing offer deed  with options to extend munitions acquisitions for a further 10 years in two five-year increments.

“The DSR noted the requirement to rapidly acquire ammunition stocks from existing suppliers and contractors” Mr James said.

“NIOA is proud to be extended as Defence’s strategic supply partner for the range of natures included in the MMD supporting ADF preparedness.

“Through the MMD, NIOA, with supply partners Northrop Grumman, Vista, Rheinmetall, Winchester and RUAG, will provide options to directly support accelerated preparedness objectives identified in the DSR.

“With a successful track record of proven delivery, NIOA’s partnership meets Defence’s objectives for reduced transactional costs associated with munitions supply arrangements, consolidated supply arrangements and modernising selected ADF munitions.”

NIOA is the largest supplier of non-guided munitions to the ADF delivering Australia the medium calibre munitions for the LAND 400 Rheinmetall Boxer CRV, a selection of mortar capability, as well as the products listed under the MMD.

UK Royal Marines field over 1,000 Persistent Systems MPU5 Handheld Networking Radios to Support Future Commando Force

Thursday, June 8th, 2023

UK’s Ministry of Defence’s Future Commando Force program transforming Royal Marines into forward-deployed special operations force using new sensors, unmanned systems, and mobile ad hoc network

For Immediate Release

NEW YORK, N.Y.—May 11, 2023—Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”) a leader in mobile ad hoc networking (MANET), announced today that it has so far received orders to supply over 1,000 MPU5 handheld networking radios to the UK Royal Marines in support of their transformative Future Commando Force program.

“The network is the foundation on which future technologies will be deployed,” said Eve Shapiro, Director of Business Development, International Team, at Persistent Systems. “Our MPU5’s will transport data from sensors and unmanned systems enabling small agile commando teams to exert a disproportionally large effect on the battlefield.”

The Android-loaded MPU5 runs the Wave Relay® MANET algorithm, enabling seamless and robust peer-to-peer sharing of voice, video, text, GPS location, and sensor data without requiring vulnerable base stations or external communications infrastructure, speeding up the tempo of military operations.

“This is key in light of the objectives set forth by the Future Commando Force program,” Shapiro said.

These restructured Royal Marines will serve in two new Littoral Response Groups (LRGs) and are busy taking on new equipment to reflect that role.

This gear includes new helmet cameras, hand-thrown unmanned aircraft and ground systems, rotary-wing drones for ISR and resupply, and MPU5s to provide the MANET that connects the troops, equipment, and command. Indeed, for the past few years, the Royal Marines have been experimenting with Persistent’s Wave Relay® MANET:

• The Royal Marines used MPU5s to great effect during the Green Dagger exercise, held in the Mojave Desert. During that exercise, the Royal Marines of the newly formed LRG (South) were part of a U.S. Marine force that performed well in multi-national wargames.

• And last December, the Royal Marines likewise used MPU5s during Musandam Fort, in Oman. According to the Royal Navy, “it was a test of new communications equipment—which are designed to create powerful, secure networks anywhere in the world.”

Delivery, training, and customer support to the Royal Marines will be provided by Steatite Ltd., Persistent’s UK based partner. Deliveries are already underway and will continue throughout 2023.

Persistent Systems officials say that they expect to see more purchases from the UK military and the wider European market. “When people see what you can do with an MPU5 MANET device, and what missions you can support, there will be increased demand for the technology,” Shapiro said.

Rangering in the Ruin: WarGate Books’ Sgt. Thor

Wednesday, June 7th, 2023

Rangers of the 75th Ranger Regiment have gone, seen, and conquered in some of the worst places in the world – this, however, may be the strangest place they’ve led the way. The following release from WarGate Books – one of the owners of which is a former Ranger – tells of the latest project in the Forgotten Ruin series. The Ruin books are a different take on military science fiction.

Somethingthing to know before you get started: Amazon’s marketing department is now shad0w-banning indie authors with “violent content” on the cover (guns, swords, combat, etc.: more on that here). Big-name authors like Jack Carr haven’t been impacted yet (that we’re aware of), but individual writers and small publishing houses very much have been. They cannot run ads on Amazon Marketing Solutions on affected novels, and some books are no longer searchable by the author’s name. You can’t find them unless you know the specific title of the individual book. Sound familiar?

Sgt. Thor and Mjölnir Rock the Ruin

Area 51, God Only Knows When

Bring it in; take a knee. WarGate Books is proud to announce Sgt. Thor’s imminent raid on the Ruin, Sua Sponte solo style.

BLUF: An indie book company with a stable-full of combat veteran writers and best-selling authors is launching a new book line. You should back them on Kickstarter.

This won’t matter to you if you prefer anemic military science fiction, effete protagonists, lackluster action, or peace. If you appreciate a side of carnage to go with your violence of action, though, then you’re going to want to read on!

Who is Sgt. Thor? He’s what would happen if Conan completed Ranger School, got tabbed and scrolled, and carried a .50 AMR named Mjölnir on his adventures. He’s the guy who changed his name and his religious affiliation so he could grow a beard, then went full Viking. You know, the former surfer with the Glock 17, matched tomahawks, and Thor Score: The Regimental high score for stacking monstrous bodies.

What is the Ruin? It’s an ancient, murderous future. It’s four hundred generations from now, the wreck of a world Ruined by a nano-plague. It’s a place stalked by hideous creatures and haunted by fiends.

It’s the place a company of Rangers with attachments and augments finds themselves going shock and awesome on a series of HVTs straight out of a Tolkien novel or D&D campaign.

What about WarGate Books? They’re this world’s source for the acclaimed Galaxy’s EdgeThe Lost, Warlord¸ Splashdown, and of course Forgotten Ruin series of novels. They have entirely reimagined military science fiction.

Rangers gonna Ranger, whether they’re killing bad guys in dirty manjams or orcs in rusted armor.

“The Ranger tab is just a leadership school. The scroll is a way of life.” Sgt. Thor

An excerpt from the Forgotten Ruin series…

I tell Sergeant Thor what I’ve seen out there, more undead than expected being called back into service by the god of death. And yes, it sounds just as crazy as I think it does when I say it out loud. But I never mind that and give the intel because that’s what you’re supposed to do no matter how crazy it sounds.

We’re about to get hit good and hard by an unexpected amount of enemy units that may be ghosts.

From the Rangers’ position here in the team with the command element, they can’t see the undead elves and werewolves now massing behind the front of skeleton foot and grave troll heavies getting murdered by Knife Hand and the scouts. Even the snipers can’t hit them. But they’re there.

“Death god,” rumbles Thor, still holding Mjölnir, his Barrett M107 anti-materiel rifle.

I can’t tell if killing a god is actually seriously being considered by the Ranger sniper, but if I were a betting man, I’m pretty sure the Thor High Score just got another item added to the to-do-before-death list.

He confirms this a second later.
