LoopRope

Friday, December 30th, 2011

If you find yourself regularly tying gear down then you might want to check out this new product we just heard about. They use a Nite Ize S-biner to adjust the length of their bungee and secure it on one end. However, I have to say, their “Safe Knot” they use to anchor the LoopRope is just a simple girth hitch or lark’s head. The double bungee effect looks to offer some versatility in securing the load especially when used in conjunction with other LoopRopes.

Overall, it looks like a new mousetrap and might be right for some of our readers considering the product’s versatility and adaptability. You’ll come up with ways of using the LoopRope that no one ever considered.

BioLite CampStove Available for Pre-Order

Monday, December 5th, 2011

We first mentioned the BioLite stove in February of 2010. Thanks to SSD reader Brian M, we know that the CampStove is now available for pre-order after a very long wait indeed.

As you can see, the production version is different from the prototypes we originally showed. BioLite relies on wood gassifier technology combined with a fan that is powered by the conversion of heat generated by the stove to electricity through the use of a Thermoelectric Generator made from solid state semi-conductor elements. The use of woodgas has been around for years and converts the combustible elements of wood into a highly efficient flammable gas by super heating the wood. However, BioLite was originally envisioned for use in developing nations and it burns not only wood but also pine cones, underbrush, pellets, rice husks and even dung.

The CampStove doesn’t just produce heat. It also produces electricity that can be used to charge electronic items such as phones and lights. It takes up about the same volume as a Nalgene bottle and can be used for camping, post-disaster recovery or for any application where you want to use wood and other debris to produce heat and power.

Kifaru Releases MultiCam/Coyote Woobies

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Kifaru Tactical has just updated their excellent Woobie and Doobie. They are now offering both in a reversible, two-tone MultiCam/Coyote color combination. The Woobie was originally envisioned as a modern replacement for the USGI poncho liner. It combines RhinoSkin Shell with ClimaShield combat insulation. The Woobie uses 2 oz/square yard of insulation and the Doobie (Double Woobie) uses 4 oz/square yard of insulation.

Kifaru invested in the RhinoSkin Shell material so other products will also be offered in the new colors. For example, Slick Bags will also be available in either MultiCam or Coyote with OD interiors.

I got a Woobie several years ago when they were first released and it has weathered very well. Much better than the issue item. Granted, it costs more, but I have to remind of my old adage; “Buy Quality, Cry Once.” The issue poncho liner will never insulate like this thing.

Source Hydration AquaSource 20l ADS Tactical

Friday, September 30th, 2011

The AquaSource 20l is the first accessory designed to fit the USMC’s new pack frame. As you can see, the AquaSource adapts directly to the Down East 1606 frame (and the Army-issue 1600 frame as well) allowing a single Marine to effect a water resupply for his Squad. The AquaSource holds 20l of water in its collapsible bladder which features Source’s Glass-like reservoir technology. There are multiple carrying handles including integral shoulder straps for use in a pinch. Additionally, it adapts directly to Source Hydration’s Vehicle Hydration System.

MDM – Camelbak

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Camelbak serves as a sub-contractor to the primes for new Marine Corps Pack Suite after the mil-spec Antidote was chosen as the hydration system.

It features a wide opening mouth into a low profile, 100 oz baffled reservoir with a quick disconnect tube. The low profile cap requires just a quarter turn and can’t be over tightened to help mitigate leaks from breakage.

A commercial version should be available in exchanges beginning Spring 2012.

MDM – Forceprotector Gear ADS Tactical

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

In developing the new Marauder System, FPG built on their theme of innovating legacy equipment. Initially, they reimagined the old footlocker and green duffle bag into a modern, compartmented wheeled bag called the Deployer. Ultimately, the Deployer replaced the Marine sea bag.

Next, they developed the ThermaShield to replace legacy items like the poncho and shelter half. However, ThermaShield also provides unique capabilities in both hot and cold environments utilizing heat reflective fabrics. Not can you use it to shelter personnel but also critical equipment. Additionally, it can also be used to help prevent shock in casualties.

Here you can see a comparison between the old shelter half, designed in the Civil War (!) and the ThermaShield. It’s also 7″ wider and 22″ longer than a poncho.

But that wasn’t enough, so FPG took the next step and came up with the Marauder. The idea is that when a Soldier leaves the wire, everything he has is carried on his back. FPG integrated a stowable ground pad component into the Marauder. This closed cell foam pad can be pulled out when needed for sleep or long-term occupation of a patrol base. Additionally, it can be detached for other uses such as PT, vehicle maintenance, etc.

The Marauder is a top loader as well as a back loader meaning that, you can get to the contents through a progressive set of flaps that allow access initially to the ground pad and next to the actual contents of the bag.

Look for more in-depth information on the Marauder System from FPG soon.

Source Hydration Vehicle Hydration System ADS Tactical

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

20110914-044702.jpg

Source Hydration has introduced the Vehicle Hydration System which allows individuals to hydrate while enroute to the objective without draining their own reservoirs. These days many units are utilizing armored and mine protected vehicles and this looks like a great enhancement.

Consisting of a 25l Aquasource bladder and the Vehicle Hub Station (VHB), VHS is quickly integrated into any vehicle.

The Aquasource bladder holds 5 gallons and can also be worn as a backpack with it’s own straps or connected to a MOLLE frame. The VHB has 6 ports to accommodate the Source self-sealing SQC “quick-connectors” which are removable for cleaning or field replacement. The 6 ports can accommodate 6 different personnel or can be used to daisy chain VHBs to add ports. Also, the individual push button drink valves stay with the user, no matter where they are riding.

Source is well known for their glass-like PE reservoir that offers neutral taste. Additionally, it is easily cleaned due to the slider top that allows whole hand access to the inside of the bladder.
