Major Tom Greer – “An American Warrior”

October 31st, 2016

You may have known him by his pen name, Dalton Fury. But in life, he was known as Tom Greer. Not long ago, we told you that Tom had terminal pancreatic cancer. I’m sorry to say that he recently passed away from cancer at age 52.

He wrote the book, “Killing Bin Ladin” about his time as an Army officer in Delta, and also created a series of fiction fearuring ex-Delta Operator Kolt Raynor. I think there was a lot of Tom in Kolt.

He was a great man, both in and out of uniform. He would often travel to Atlanta’s Hartsfield International airport near his home to give copies of his books to service members and that was the majority of my interaction with him. I sent him copies of his books to hand out. I supported his work via SSD, and exchanged notes. I’m very sorry to see him taken so young. He’s a man who still had a lot to offer the world.

He will be missed.

Initially, I didn’t want to post about his passing, not wanting it to be a spectacle. Even though he had written several nooks, he was not a public man and I’m not sure that anything I could say would properly honor the man. Then, his brother CSM Steve Greer, shared this video memorial to Tom, so my feelings changed on the subject. It’s solemn and I found it a very fitting tribute.

Rest In Peace

(Updated) Discontinued BSA Merit Badges : Master-at-Arms

October 30th, 2016

This photo is said to be of Boy Scouts participating in the short-lived Master-at-Arms badge. It was one of the original 14 merit badges which debuted in the 1910 version of the Boy Scout Handbook and unfortunately, this one lasted just a year. The badge was missing from the 1911 version of the manual when it was released.

To earn the badge, a Scout had to master three of the following combat skills (the surviving manual says two):
-Single Stick
-Boxing
-Ju Jitsu
-Wrestling
-Gymnastics
-Quarterstaff Fencing

Update – Kirk Lawson has introduced a reproduction of the original merit badge pamphlet. The drawings come from this manual and you can download it here.

Interestingly, the pamphlet is dated 1925 but it would not be unheard of for a merit badge pamphlet to continue to be published even after it was no longer a merit badge because they were printed by private publishers at the time, and not by BSA.

Can you imagine such a merit badge today?

Kriser’s Natural Pet Stores Raising Funds to Help American Humane Provide Lifesaving Service Dogs to Veterans with Post-traumatic Stress

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 27, 2016 – As the nation gears up to commemorate Veterans Day, a company dedicated to the health of America’s animals is stepping forward to ensure the health of the brave warriors who have made major sacrifices in fighting for our freedom. Kriser’s Natural Pet stores across the country are raising money to help American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization which has supported the U.S. military for 100 years, provide lifesaving service dogs to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress (PTS).
Every day, 184 veterans are diagnosed with PTS and 20 die at their own hands – nearly one an hour. Waiting times for obtaining one of these highly trained critically important animals is estimated at between 12-18 months – far too long when the odds for heroes are this great.
To change these odds and save lives, Kriser’s Natural Pet stores across the country are collecting $1 donations from customers who visit their stores between November 6 and November 19 to help American Humane put healing leashes in the hands of veterans with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries. Trained PTS service dogs are extremely expensive at around $20,000 apiece, but provide invaluable outcomes for veterans suffering the invisible wounds of war. Veterans with service dogs have reported improved sleep, decreased startle responses, and a decrease in the need for prescribed pain medication.
“As Veteran’s Day nears, we are proud to help support our true national heroes by raising funds and awareness to provide service animals as part of the Wags4Patriots initiative that American Humane coordinates,” said Brad Kriser, founder & CEO of Kriser’s Natural Pet. “In this month of Thanksgiving, our entire Kriser’s Pack gives thanks to the people who have served our country and the amazing companion animals that support them.”
“Honoring our veterans involves both commemoration and active participation on our parts,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane. “We all need to do what we can to care for and protect those who have sacrificed so much to protect us. Our veterans, including those who suffer from the invisible wounds of war, now need our help. I salute Kriser’s Natural Pet stores for choosing to stand with our veterans and urge Americans who love their pets – and our vets – to support this important effort on behalf of those who have given so much to this country.”

G96 Products’ New Bio-Based Synthetic Gun Oil Triggers U.S. Army Approval

October 30th, 2016

bio-clp-picture

PATERSON, N.J., Oct. xx, 2016 — G96 Products Inc., a leading supplier of gun lubricants and cleaning products, announces it has received U.S. Army certification for its new Bio-CLP Synthetic Gun Oil, opening the door for its use by America’s soldiers. Bio-CLP is the first bio-based gun oil from a gun products supplier to earn the Army’s stamp of approval.

Firearm products need to be at least 49 percent comprised of renewable resources to be recognized by the USDA’s BioPreferred® program as bio-based. G96 Products’ Bio-CLP Gun Oil was lab-tested to 51 percent bio-based content. As such, it exceeded the Army’s requirements to receive Military Specification MIL-PRF 63460E(4): Cleaner, Lubricant and Preservative for Weapons and Weapon Systems.

“We’re obviously very pleased to receive this designation, but we’re even more satisfied that our product will be used by our troops in the field, and possibly help save their lives,” says G96 Products President and CEO Alan Goldman. “This highlights our commitment to both providing gun owners with the very best lubricants and cleaning supplies available today, and ensuring the well-being of the environment.”

According to the acceptance letter from the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, G96 Products’ Bio-CLP Gun Oil performed “equal to or better than the control CLP on an M249 weapon on all tests,” which included exposure to salt spray, extreme cold and very fine dust. The Bio-CLP Gun Oil experienced zero stoppages at a rate of fire exceeding 650 rounds/minute, against a criterion of no more than five stoppages.

G96 Products’ Bio-CLP Gun Oil, which also contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), will soon be available online at www.G96.com and at select sporting goods and gun stores.

G96 Products Inc. is one of the most trusted names in gun lubricants and cleaning products. Used by shooters around the world, including many law enforcement agencies, G96 continually strives to live up to its reputation for providing world-class products for firearms.
