Los Alamos National Laboratory – Science in 60 Seconds: Training the Explosives Experts

April 13th, 2016

Military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians have a tough job. Their lives—and others’ lives too—depend on their knowledge of explosive materials and the correct procedures for identifying and dismantling homemade explosives. During the Advanced Homemade Explosives training course at Los Alamos National Laboratory, lab scientists use their expertise to teach EOD techs from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy how to recognize homemade explosives labs and the raw ingredients commonly used to make IEDs and other bombs. Techs also learn safety measures, get hands-on experience synthesizing the materials, and study the sensitivity and performance characteristics of those materials. This science and hands-on training is critical for keeping EOD techs safe and helping them save lives.

Boot Campaign, Serket Racing and Kaplan University Join Forces to Launch the “Boots On” Scholarship Program to Support Military Families

April 13th, 2016

Boot Campaign, Serket Racing, and Kaplan University have joined forces on a new “Boots On” Scholarship Program designed to help current or surviving spouses and dependent children of U.S. military service members and veterans reach their higher education goals.

The “Boots On” Scholarship Program will offer up to 150 partial scholarships and three full scholarships to attend Kaplan University (KU). Applications are now being accepted through September 16, 2016. Information on how to apply for the “Boots On” Scholarship Program is available online at: www.bootcampaign.org/KU.

“All too often, the sacrifices our military families make on behalf of our country are overlooked,” says U.S. Marine veteran Mark Llano, owner/driver of Serket Racing and board member of Boot Campaign. “The Boots On scholarships will provide greater access to a flexible, high quality college education to those who love and support our service members.”
Llano’s Florida-based team, Serket Racing, is dedicated to raising awareness and directing support for veterans and their families with every race and every win.

Charged with a like mission, Boot Campaign is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan military charity that promotes patriotism, raises awareness of military issues, and provides vital assistance for our nation’s current and former military heroes and their families.

“Spouses of service members are faced with heavy challenges every day, especially when their spouse is deployed into combat, and all too often their own personal and professional goals are unfortunately put on hold or abandoned,” explains Boot Campaign CEO Robyn Payne. “Boot Campaign is committed to helping our military families, and is grateful to team with Kaplan University and Serket Racing to help spouses and their children keep on track and thrive in their desires to pursue a college degree.”

“Kaplan University is proud that more than 26 percent of our students are active military, veterans or military spouses,” adds KU Vice President Pat Milligan, who oversees Kaplan’s military scholarship programs. “Military spouses also represent one of the most successful groups of students at KU with respect to academic performance so we are thrilled to be able to unite with Boot Campaign and Serket Racing to build on that success.”

April 13th, 2016

Grinnell, Iowa (April 12, 2016) – The 77-year-old, Iowa-based firearm industry giant Brownells, Inc. has opened its first ever retail store location in Grinnell, Iowa. Known worldwide for its all-things-firearms website – Brownells.com – and their enormous catalogs, the Grinnell retail store marks the company’s first brick and mortar location.

The 7,000 sq. ft. retail store, attached to Brownells’ new 245,000 sq. ft. distribution center, is located at 3006 Brownells Parkway in Grinnell, Iowa, just a few yards off Interstate 80 at the 182 mile marker.

Visitors to the new retail location will experience one of the nicest and most unique gun stores they’ve ever visited. They’ll be greeted by nearly 1,200 new and used firearms, plus a large selection of ammunition, optics, parts and accessories, all set against an outdoorsy backdrop with rich wood accents and a world-class taxidermy collection. If customers don’t find what they’re looking for on the shelves, they’re invited to order from the warehouse where any of the nearly 100,000 firearms-related items will be delivered to the store in minutes.

“Our company has been family-owned and Iowa-based for 77 years,” said third-generation owner and CEO, Pete Brownell. “We’ve done business nationally and internationally for decades, but we’re excited to have an Iowa focus now with our retail store. What’s most unique about this store is that it’s located in the same walls as our distribution center. This equates to a fantastic customer experience and the best of both worlds; a beautiful retail store to transact and access to a huge selection of products unrivaled anywhere in the world.”

Brownells retail store hours are as follows:

April 13th, 2016

Håkan Spuhr has been working on this collapsible stock for the G3 for about 6 years.  Having been smacked in the cheekbone with the issue stock, I can say, this upgrade is most welcome.

At IWA he told me it was where he wanted it.  Coming soon!

Feel The SURG – USSOCOM Seeks Suppressor Upper Receiver Group for M4A1 Carbines

April 13th, 2016

On 12 April, USSOCOM’s Directorate of Procurement released a solicitation for the long anticipated Suppressor Upper Receiver Group.

According to the government, “The SURG weapon upgrade of the M4A1 Lower Receiver Group will allow the Warfighter’s weapon to be optimized for continuous suppressed use.” Interestingly, there’s no requirement that the upper feature an integral suppressor, just that it is suppressed.

Vendors have been working on this project for quite sometime as SOCOM has collected data in order to dial in the requirement. As you can imagine, most of the major players have all teamed up which explains the relatively short lead time until submissions are due.

Potential offerers have until July 13th to answer. Specific information requires an account with Fed Biz Opps.

Invest In Veteran-led Companies || VeteranCrowd, LLC

April 13th, 2016

If you’re looking to invest in veteran-led companies the team at VeteranCrowd has the platform to do so. More details below:

VeteranCrowd

The marketplace for investing in Veteran-led companies

Why Veterans? The leadership skills and values veterans develop in the military translate to greater success in the private business sector. Veterans are:

  • Team players.
  • Mission-oriented, effectively organizing teams to achieve objectives.
  • Good communicators, clearly stating goals and objectives as well as the “commander’s intent.”.
  • Creative problem-solvers, accustomed to working with limited time and resources.
  • Calm in stressful situations.
  • Personally accountable, holding themselves to a higher standard and maintaining a heightened sense of ethics.
  • Integrity first and always.
  • With change comes opportunity. Until recently, the business of raising capital remained virtually unchanged for the eighty years. The issuer’s reach was limited to the high net worth investors with whom they had existing relationships and could contact directly. Now, Regulation D Rule 506C of the JOBS Act allows for general solicitation. We list equity investment opportunities on the web and investors explore these investment options online, at their leisure.

Timing. With millions of troops transitioning to civilian life, veterans becoming entrepreneurs in great numbers and the new rules surrounding raising capital, we believe our timing is ideal.

Who can participate? Veteran-led businesses, family offices, professionally managed funds, and accredited investors. An accredited investor is anyone who:

  • earned income that exceeded $200,000 (or $300,000 together with a spouse) in each of the prior two years, and reasonably expects the same for the current year, OR
  • has a net worth over $1 million, either alone or together with a spouse (excluding the value of the person’s primary residence).
  • In addition, entities such as banks, partnerships, corporations, nonprofits and trusts may be accredited investors. Of the entities that would be considered accredited investors and depending on your circumstances, the following may be relevant to you:

  • any trust, with total assets in excess of $5 million, not formed to specifically purchase the subject securities, whose purchase is directed by a sophisticated person,  OR
  • any entity in which all of the equity owners are accredited investors.
  • Many states have passed intrastate equity crowdfunding laws that allow non-accredited investors to participate in generally solicited equity offerings. The Federal Government is expected to enact similar rules in 2016.

How it works. Interested parties simply create a free account on VeteranCrowd.com to view available equity offerings. Select offerings are thoroughly vetted for suitability and compliance before they are posted on VeteranCrowd.com. Qualified investors explore offering details and may request any further information and access to the management team. Once an investment is committed, our FINRA broker dealer conducts investor accreditation, processes the transaction and the securities are issued.
