Steve Reichert Training – SRT Ballistics Course

August 14th, 2015

INSTGRAM-SRT-Advanced-Ballistics2

The SRT ballistics course is a full 8+ hour course that immerses the student in every aspect of bullets in flight. This course is a very intense and in depth dive into what very few people fully understand. The instructor for this course is Dr. Lyman Hazelton.

Dr. Hazelton has served as a faculty research scientist at the Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Science of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His work as a Project Scientist and acting Principal Investigator, he led a team from MIT and the NASA Ames Research Laboratory to create a computer system to provide astronauts with AI based scientific assistance, the “PI-in-a-Box” experiment. The experiment successfully flew on SLS-2 (STS-58).

Following this mission, he headed the design team for the onboard science computer system (hardware and software) for the Chandra X-ray Observatory CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Dr. Hazelton has done previous work in lasers, holography, spectroscopy, and plasma physics. He has fifteen published scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, and has delivered numerous presentations at national scientific meetings. His “PI-in-a-Box” project won a NASA Presidential Commercial Space Act Award and he has received personal certificates of recognition from NASA and the American Association for Artificial Intelligence. He holds an Interdepartmental (dual) doctorate of philosophy in Aeronautics and Astronautics and in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Polaris Defense – Contract Awarded For Ground Guidance Route Planning Software Integration Into ATAK

August 14th, 2015

Ground Guidance Screen Shot

MINNEAPOLIS (August 13, 2015) — A contract for Ground Guidance software expands the patented route planning and terrain analysis software for the U.S. Army by integrating it into the Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) platform. The software suite from Primordial, which is owned by Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII), provides on and off-road routing for mounted and dismounted soldiers, accounting for terrain, weather, enemy activity and equipment load. The contract also includes a computer-based training (CBT) package.

Military small unit leaders face complex tradeoffs when selecting equipment and routes. Ground Guidance, when integrated into platforms like ATAK, plans efficient and safe routes to and from mission objectives and allows soldiers to account for other variables that impact speed and time.

“We continue to expand the integration of Ground Guidance onto our mission planning platforms because it accelerates mission planning, enables dynamic and rapid re-planning, facilitates thorough course of action (COA) analysis, and is critical for remote mission planning,” said LTC Robert Klarenbach, U.S. Army. “Bottom line, it increases the combat effectiveness of our soldiers.”

Also, with each platform and integration comes user evaluation and testing to improve the software and verify the accuracy of route metrics such as distance, duration, energy expenditure, calories burned and exhaustion.

“Ground Guidance dramatically accelerates mission planning, facilitates on-the-fly re-planning, and improves route quality by automatically generating fast and concealed routes through on- and off-road terrain,” said Randy Milbert, Director of Software, Polaris. “As a result, small combat teams are more autonomous, nimble and adaptable in quickly changing battlefield conditions.”

Ground Guidance has been integrated into FalconView, TerraExplorer, Nett Warrior, X-Plan, Ringtail, Tactical Ground Reporting (TIGR) and Google Earth. Primordial has also secured Ground Guidance contracts with major defense contractors including General Dynamics, Rockwell Collins, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon.

Mysterioso- Hydrawear

August 13th, 2015

I kept passing by this booth at outdoor retailer and the manikin out front had a Green colored compression shirt out front with what looked to be integrated hydration. I finally had enough a breather to stop in and check it out. This model is designed for watersports although their others are for cycling.

Hydrawear by Mysterioso is pretty interesting. They aren’t the first people to do it but I like their combination of materials (bamboo/poly) and their choice of Source hydration reservoirs.  There are some cool applications here.

Offered in Mens and Women’s sizing S-XXL in a variety of colors.

Support Pitti Heerwagen as He Raises Money for the All In All The Time Foundation

    August 13th, 2015

    Meet Andreas ‘Pitti’ Heerwagen.

Pitti was born in the East when Germany was still divided and grew up to serve in the German Navy. He came to the United States in 2007 for a military exchange program. He fell in love with America and never left, gaining his green card. Currently, he works in sales at S&S Precision.

For 15 years, Pitti has competed in triathlons including five Iron Man iterations as well as over 30 other events. This time, he’ll be competing in the Maryland Cambridge Iron Man on Oct 3rd. In addition to the thrill of competition, Pitti will also raise funds and awareness for the All In All The Time Foundation. His other goal is to not let Drew down.

Although always in training, he’s had his sights on this regional qualifying Iron Man since January. Pitti admitted to being “Addicted to working out”, and currently participates in one major event per year to provide purpose for his efforts.

He reiterated several times that he was not doing this one for himself and he’s said that it’s made the training easier. Plus, he’s 40 now. He knows what he’s done wrong in that past and what works.

But there’s something more. Pitti recently read a book that has seriously influenced his training philosophy. He read, “Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance“. He not only has taken inspiration from this book, he has given copies to friends. He spoke with me about it, “It’s a natural born lifestyle…in our DNA. We were made for a time when you couldn’t just pick up a Snickers, you had to fight for it. You couldn’t eat four times a day.” To learn more about what Pitti was talking about, you’ll have to read the book, but I’ve got to say, it seems to be working. I’ve known Pitti for years but never seen him this lean, or focused. He told me that he is the same weight as when he was a young man starting out in the service. If there is anything personal about this race, it’s that he wants to realize his goal of qualifying for Hawaii.

When I asked if there was anything he wanted to add, he said, “I want to to thank S&S for allowing me to train hard.” Pitti isn’t alone in his commitment to this cause. Drew from S&S said that his arms are getting tired from giving massages every day.

Please join us in supporting Pitti.
