Gunfighter Moment – Mike Pannone

July 27th, 2013

Frequently I will use a student’s gun to make a point about the common principles of weapons handling , marksmanship or both. I emphasize the same methodology whether you use an M&P, CZ, HK, Glock or 1911. The same general principle apply regardless of where the magazine release and slide stop are located and what shape they are. You may favor one gun or another but you should be able to shoot any quality pistol accurately if you truly understand the fundamentals of marksmanship. It’s all sights and trigger. I learned at my last unit in the Army that if the bullets aren’t going where you want, in your head you should be saying “sights, trigger, sights, trigger…”

·Sights-properly aligned sights held at the specific point you want to deliver fire

·Trigger- smooth, steady, even pressure exerted straight to the rear without disturbing the lay of the sights.

·Repeat as necessary!

As far as I am concerned there is no such thing as “advanced pistol marksmanship”, only “pistol marksmanship done at an advanced level of skill”. There is no secret mojo that you only learn when the “sensei” says “you are ready to be enlightened.”

That’s pretty much as advanced as marksmanship gets with a pistol. How precisely, rapidly and consistently you do it correlates to how advanced your shooting is.

-Mike Pannone

Mike Pannone retired from the Army’s premier assault force (1st SFOD-D) after an explosive breaching injury. A year after his retirement America was attacked on 9/11 and he returned to help serve his country as the head marksmanship instructor at the Federal Air Marshals training course and then moved to help stand up the FAMS Seattle field office. In 2003 he left the FAMS to serve as a PSD detail member and then a detail leader for the State Department during 2003 and 2004 in Baghdad and Tikrit.

In 2005 he served as a ground combat advisor of the Joint Counter IED Task Force and participated on combat operations with various units in Al Anbar province. Upon returning he gave IED awareness briefings to departing units and helped stand up a pre-Iraq surge rifle course with the Asymmetric Warfare Group as a lead instructor. With that experience as well as a career of special operations service in Marine Reconnaissance, Army Special Forces and JSOC to draw from he moved to the private sector teaching planning, leadership, marksmanship and tactics as well as authoring and co-authoring several books such as The M4 Handbook, AK Handbook and Tactical Pistol shooting. Mike also consults for several major rifle and accessory manufacturers to help them field the best possible equipment to the warfighter, law enforcement officer and upstanding civilian end user. He is considered a subject matter expert on the AR based Stoner platform in all its derivatives.

Recon Series – This Ain’t The 5.11 You’re Used To

July 26th, 2013

I’m not going to pontificate much about this but I’d recommend that you go take a look at what 5.11 Tactical has been working on with their Recon Series of training products that includes footwear, clothing and bags. It’s certainly not what I would traditionally expect from 5.11.

20130726-164901.jpg

The styling, materials and construction are more contemporary and the whole series seems to be focused on training but I’d say that some will be able to wear these items on the job as well. The price tag reflects the update but I don’t find this as a serious detractor. While I haven’t seen any of these items in person yet, if I had to make a criticism it would be the prominent branding. Something a bit more subtle might be more appropriate. However, I know some of you are going to lose it over the blood type ID.

It’s worth taking a look but please don’t come in and bash the brand without first seeing what they are doing with the Recon line.

Disruptive Tech – Test Firing a Full 3D Printed Gun

July 26th, 2013

Now that the lame stream media has moved on from trying to scare the hell out of Joe the Plumber and his neighbors with wild tales of streets run red with the blood of innocents caused by 3D printed guns in the hands of wild eyed Libertarians bent on mayhem, we can once again begin to take a realistic look at the technology.

These guys manufactured a complete rifle on a 3D printer. They call it the Grizzly, named after Canadian models of the Sherman tank from World War Twice. It’s a .22LR contraption based on the Defense Distributed Liberator design, and like that model, uses a roofing nail as a firing pin. The Winchester Dynapoint round split both the barrel and receiver for about 2″ but I’d say this has a lot more to do with the materials than the construction.

Of course, I have to add a caveat. I always take pause with anything accomplished by a guy who wears a ring on his point finger. There’s something sketch going on there, one way or another. But in the end, it’s outliers like these guys who will drag us all kicking and screaming into a micro manufacturing society.

An included detachable modular MOLLE chest rig does allow for further customization, however, along with multiple Velcro loop panels. Other features include adjustable shoulder straps, rear vest panel with built-in admin pouch, drag handle, adjustable radio pouch, and removable kangaroo two magazine pouch.

Additional Details On The New Army Physical Fitness Uniform

July 26th, 2013

This is the briefing provided to senior Army leaders regarding the new Army Physical Fitness Uniform. I am no longer in the Army but as a former Soldier, I really like what they’ve done. Traditionally, going back to the banana suit (yes, I’m that old) Army issue PT uniforms haven’t been much to write home about. For those of you unfamiliar, the Army colors are Black and Yellow so a Black PT uniform is quite fitting. For those of you worried about being run over by a maniacal driver during periods of darkness; never fear, your trusty companion the reflective belt won’t be going away.

If you read the last post on the APFU, which featured Slide 4, and the associated comments, you will recall that a Ft Bragg-based Soldier mentioned recently participating in a recent Limited User Evaluation. It’s also mentioned in this brief. And, even more interestingly, the formal announcement is slated for 1st Qtr, FY 2014. The APFU announcement was originally to coincide with the Camo announcement. I’d say this adds even more credence to the idea that the Camo announcement is now scheduled for AUSA.

If anyone wants to share the Camo Improvement Effort slides, I’d be most obliged.
