Coalition Rations

September 9th, 2010

The New York Times posting a fantastic article on the field rations of Coalition forces in Afghanistan. The article is all over the internet. It seems like everyone is posting this but we have an interesting take. We have actually eaten several of the examples in the article over the years. Some are very basic and spartan while others are quite palatable. However, one of the examples in the article takes us back. Apparently, the Australians are still including musk lollies in their rat packs. We would have figured that they had stopped issuing them due to possible Geneva Convention violations. You see, musk lollies are musk flavored candies. Yes, they taste as foul as they sound, at least to the American palette (and Australian as well according to what we have heard) and have been the perfect gag for practical jokes. Be sure to get some if you have a pogey bait thief. They are the little pink pill looking things on the Australian ration photo. It’s like spraying perfume in your mouth.

In an SSD first, we are going to open up the comments section to hear our readers’ experiences with these and other rations. If you have photos of rations, please send them to us and we will post them this weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

BAE Systems to Acquire OASYS Technology

September 8th, 2010

BAE Systems announced yesterday it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire OASYS Technology, a privately owned company specializing in the design and manufacture of electro-optical systems and subassemblies for aerospace, defense, industrial and commercial markets. For those of you unfamiliar with OASYS Technologies, they build some fantastic thermal sights such as the SkeetIR Thermal Mono-Sight.

“OASYS Technology’s talented workforce and technologies will enhance BAE Systems’ ability to serve its customers as a leader in day/night surveillance and targeting systems as well as precision guidance,” commented Bob Murphy, executive vice president of BAE Systems, Inc. product sectors.

OASYS Technology employs 65 people at its 40,000 square foot design and manufacturing facility in Manchester, New Hampshire. Upon successful closing, OASYS Technology’s operations are expected to be integrated with the BAE Systems business headquartered in Nashua, New Hampshire.

OASYS Technology Chief Executive Officer Mike Couture stated, “We look forward to the opportunity to become part of the BAE Systems family. We will be better positioned to serve our current customer base and broaden both the market and potential applications for our expertise, technologies, and products.”

The proposed acquisition is conditional, among other things, upon receiving certain U.S. regulatory approvals, and it is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2010. The purchase price is said to be up to $55 Million.

William Gibson’s “Zero History” Hits Shelves

September 8th, 2010

SSD loves William Gibson and we are excited about his latest book due to the subject matter. Not only is he writing about the nexus of the military and fashion industries, few know that he has been in here before, but in real life. He is truly big in Japan where he has lent his name and design influence to a flight jacket as well as high tops and a line of military-esque bags.

A couple of spoilers await at io9.com where they discuss the book in more detail. “Zero History” was released today in the US.

Trade Your Stinky Kit for KAC Products

September 8th, 2010

Grey Group Training is tired of seeing shiny crap kit in advertising and so is Knight’s Armament. They have teamed up with Knight’s Armament Corporation to present a contest that seeks used dirty real world plate carriers and armor carriers with pouches, patches, etc (don’t include armor, plates, mags, or sensitive items…) in exchange for prizes.

Here’s how it works. You post your pictures of your used kit on their Facebook page from now until 17 September and GGT will pick the 6 best sets of kit. Selectees ship their used kit to Grey Group (they pay the shipping), and the selectees receive prizes back from Knight’s as well as the bragging rights for their kit being used in KAC ads.

Knight’s is putting up everything from hand stops to Aimpoint mounts, apparel, rails, and even a SR 15E3 complete upper! So, start digging in the tough boxes in the garage, and get the camera ready. The more used the kit setups the better. Good luck!
