5.11 Announces Acquisition of Beyond Clothing

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

5.11 Tactical has literally just announced the purchase of Beyond Clothing which includes the custom brand Beyond Tactical. This announcement comes right on the heels of Rick Elder’s move to 5.11 to spin up a new Special Operations focused business unit. So for you guys who kept asking me what Rick was going to do over there and how 5.11 was going to bring Berry manufacturing in and make that leap to the Elite customer, this is what I meant when I said that they had a plan. This is huge news and will affect 5.11 and how it is perceived in the market in untold ways.

Here is their press release –

5.11 Tactical, the global innovator of tactical gear, today announced its acquisition of Beyond, a highly technical performance clothing company that builds custom American-made apparel. The acquisition enhances 5.11 Tactical’s domestic manufacturing, product innovation and rapid prototyping capabilities, while providing Beyond with an expanded infrastructure to meet the global needs of the extreme purpose built customer, such as winter expeditionary teams, alpinists, and Special Operations communities. Industry veteran Rick Elder has been appointed as president of Beyond, which will continue to operate as a separate division of 5.11 Tactical in Seattle, Washington, while Beyond Founder Scott Jones will move into the role of chief designer.

“At 5.11 Tactical we are innovators who make purpose-built gear for the most demanding missions. Investing in Beyond’s continued growth is a prime opportunity to further our leading edge development,” said Tom Davin, CEO, 5.11 Tactical. “Rick Elder adds a unique set of capabilities to our 5.11 product development ecosystem. His U.S. Government, Military and Special Forces service will be a huge asset to the growth of our outdoor channel and our ability to be innovative.”

Rick Elder, a 13-year industry veteran, is charged with leading the rebranding and re-launch of Beyond, building upon the brand’s existing reputation and relationships. As part of the acquisition, 5.11 Tactical will leverage Beyond’s unique manufacturing to create leading edge, innovative products that drive deeper connections among U.S. Military and law enforcement professionals, as well as extreme outdoor enthusiasts.

An example of product innovation can be found in Beyond’s Cold Fusion Shock Jacket. Made from winterweight softshell, Scholler WB-400, this high performance product defines versatility. The Cold Fusion Shock Jacket is available in seven colors for men and women, and like all Beyond products, can be customized to the consumer’s specifications and delivered quickly.

“I’ve been serving the outdoor and tactical communities for more than 20 years, and am committed to take Beyond to the next level. Beyond is a brand that develops customized solutions for extreme users within the outdoor and tactical channels of trade,” said Elder. “5.11 Tactical has greatly enhanced its position by executing this acquisition—its infrastructure will help Beyond reach a global community, but still allow it a unique voice. ”

Elder formerly served as the executive director of Smith Optics Elite Division, where he led the development of the ballistic eye wear program. Prior to Smith Optics, Elder spent 10 years as a US Federal Program Manager, developing equipment in support of the United States Special Operation Command. Prior to, he attained the rank of Sergeant and later, Captain, completing his tour in 2001 within the 75th Ranger Regiment, United States Special Operations Command. Elder also served in the United States Army for seven years as both an enlisted soldier and commissioned officer.

Rick Elder Moving to 5.11 Tactical as VP of SOF Products

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

It seems like just the other day that Rick Elder had left Government service supporting USSOCOM at Natick and had accepted a position as Executive Director Smith Optics Elite Division. He’s done one hell of a job during his time at Smith. Maybe that’s why the past two years seems like just yesterday. Time sure flies when you’re having fun. But, today is a new day, and Smith Optics announces that Rick is leaving and 5.11 Tactical announces that in October, he will join them as Vice President of Special Operations Forces Products.

The move is extremely amicable and Rick won’t be leaving Smith immediately. He’s going to stick around for two months to help in finding his replacement, as well as spending additional time in ensuring a smooth transition.

Rick Elder provided SSD with the following statement, “I have greatly enjoyed my time at Smith Optics, working with a fantastic team that over the last two years helped propel this division into one of the top tier ballistic eyewear providers in the world. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that Smith provided me and proud of all that we have accomplished.”

Regarding the new opportunity with 5.11 Tactical, “I am excited to join the 5.11 Tactical leadership team in October. While I cannot yet share the specifics of 5.11’s plans to serve the Special Operations communities, I look forward to telling you more about the company’s plan for 2013 before the end of this year.”

First off, congrats to Rick, who I’ve known for many years, on his new position. Second, congrats to 5.11 Tactical for landing Rick. He’s a very talented guy. Finally, think about 5.11 starting a division to concentrate on SOF Products. This announcement has so many implications and we can’t wait to see where this will take them.

5.11 Tactical Apex Warrior’s Belt

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

I am a big fan of Biothane belts. They give the look and performance of leather but are impervious to the effects of water as well as bodily fluids.

5.11 Tactical has introduced a limited edition version of their Apex Gunner’s Belt. The Apex Warrior’s Belt is individually serialized, inscribed with year, number (1/511, 2/511, etc.), and the passage from Isaiah 6:8, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” which sums up why many of us have taken the oath to defend our fellow citizens from harm. The ergonomically curved belt material provides 1,500 lbs of tensile strength and is paired with a dual prong stainless steel buckle. Offered in Dark Horse Brown in sizes Med – XLarge.

Warrior West – 5.11 Tactical Plate Carrier

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

The upcoming 5.11 Tactical Plate Carrier was a soft launch at SHOT Show but has been pretty much kept under wraps since then. They’ve refined the design a little but for the most part it’s remained unchanged.

Constructed of LiteLok, it features a die cut pile MOLLE field along (with flat admin pocket behind) with a kangaroo style flap with integrated magazine pouches. The flaps for these mag pouches can be tucked out of the way. It is a center pull quick release with cables over both shoulders. There is also a skeletonized cummerbund. Additionally, there is an integrated drag strap in the rear.

5.11 TDK – The Jokes On Them

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

For an April Fool’s Day goof, 5.11 Tactical came up with a great scheme. They would tell everyone that they were going to manufacture a tactical kilt. They went all out and produced a fantasy product called the 5.11 Tactical Duty Kilt. They even recruited spokesman Kyle Lamb to get in on the act. The video and gag product page went viral and it was such a big hit that they decided to go ahead and produce a run…for real. Nothing like capitalism in action. The market demands a product and they make it. Here is 5.11 Tactical’s full response to the phenomenon.

Friends in the 5.11 Tactical Community,

About a month ago our lead designer, Cory Nykoluk, came to me with the idea to have some fun on April 1st with a 5.11 Tactical Duty Kilt. “We’ve had a number of requests for kilts, so why not make one?” Cory had enlisted our creative services director, Matt Frederick and our director of ecommerce, Brian Rogers. I gave the project a green light with the commander’s guidance to make the “TDK” a true 5.11 product supported by a proper launch. Operational security was strict as only about 6 people inside 5.11 knew about this project. In fact, the only reference in meetings and e-mails was to “Project Caber.” Our close friend Kyle Lamb, President of Viking Tactics, was briefed and signed on immediately. It turned out he was about to attend a Dropkick Murphys concert. Perfect timing as band member, Scruffy Wallace, is a kiltsman who plays bagpipes and the tin whistle in a VTAC T-shirt. The final piece needed was an athlete/first responder to demonstrate the mobility of the TDK. Matt Frederick called Roman, a veteran duty sheriff and Parkour athlete and we were rolling.

Last week, when we reviewed the video footage of Roman leaping walls in the TDK – it was clear – we had achieved the goal of making a Kilt true to the 5.11 brand. There was a collective “uh-oh, we only have one kilt in inventory!” On Saturday, March 31st, I called 5.11 Tactical founder, Dan Costa, to tip him off. His response: “Be ready, you’re going to sell some kilts!”

Indeed, the Tactical Duty Kilt launch was a success, so it seems the April Fool’s Day joke is on us! Due to your positive response, we are pleased to announce that the Tactical Duty Kilt will become available for pre-orders soon on the following web page: http://www.511tactical.com/Tactical-Duty-Kilt.html. We don’t plan to make the TDK an “in-line” product, so this is a limited time, web only offer. If you haven’t already signed up for notifications on when this product becomes available for purchase, please do so now at http://www.511tactical.com/Tactical-Duty-Kilt.html and give us your name and e-mail address in the form located on the right-hand side of the page. We plan on sending out 1 more email to those that have given us their information to confirm size and color and other important ordering details.

5.11 Tactical Duty Kilts will be available in Black, Khaki, and OD Green (MultiCam will be offered at a slightly higher price) in even waist sizes 30- 40 for a very limited time – don’t miss out. Remember we only have one in inventory today, so we’ll need some time to make them for you!

Thanks for your friendship, sense of humor and support of 5.11 Tactical. I’m signing off to place my Tactical Duty Kilt order!

Tom Davin
CEO, 5.11 Tactical

Thanks CK!
