VIPER Gets Political Fighting for Veteran’s Jobs

Monday, May 28th, 2012

We’ve mentioned VIPER before. The Veterans Industry Program for Employment Reintegration is a charity sponsored by S.O.Tech and it found itself center stage this last week at Los Angeles’ City Hall. LA was voting to become the largest city in the US to ban single use plastic bags. This is a move which was vehemently opposed by plastics industry lobbyists. One of their main counter arguments was that American plastics jobs would be lost. Interestingly, VIPER’s Vets were called to the microphone to talk about the jobs that have already been gained in their sewing program, Green Vets Los Angeles. GVLA is a program of the VIPER non-profit set up to sew reusable cloth shopping bags. Most of the work is accomplished at their facility right in the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Hospital. VIPER Founder Jim Cragg said the program was originally set up for Vets to sew and assemble medical kits for troops going into harm’s way as a tool to help them feel that they were once again serving society, and that working on bags to save the environment was a logical move to help the vets continue to serve their community while rejoining the work force. The bags are assembled from recycled materials and have been a big hit across the LA area. In an environment that many would call liberal, Veterans have found a way to go back to work and make a difference by working in harmony with the local economy. Good on Green Vets LA and VIPER.

Introducing S.O.TECH’s MACTAC Kit

Friday, March 9th, 2012

S.O.TECH has a long history or working with law enforcement to push the envelope in tactical gear design. This time they’ve worked with LAPD, LASD, and Orange County Sheriffs Dept (CA) to create the MACTAC (Multi-Assault Counter-Terrorism Action Capabilities) as a way to respond to multiple violent assaults and/or terrorist acts. MACTAC was inspired by the tactical dilemmas posed by the Mumbai assault and active shooter incidents like Columbine.

“LAPD is in the process of developing supplemental courses to help supervisors and team leaders apply the MACTAC concept during critical field incidents.” – LAPD Official website

The kit includes the Mission Pack Micro, the Helmet Mesh Adapter, and the Rapid Response Bandolier with add-on items also available. The concept is, everything you need for any engagement in a single package, with hard plate coverage, helmet, ID patches, and an extra 120 rounds of ammunition. The pack also offers additional room for food and water, extra weapons/ammunition/holsters, an IFAK med kit and other mission-specific gear.

MACTAC training is rapidly becoming a top priority for a variety of agencies nationwide in 2012 and this new kit from S.O.TECH will support your requirements.

For Law Enforcement Agency Representatives interested in MACTAC, email jim@specopstech.com or julieb@specopstech.com to learn more about the program.

SOTech Launches Pack Upgrades

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

We have long been fans of SOTech’s Go Pack and now they’ve made a couple of upgrades. For example, they now offer two straps on the Go Pack, Go Bag, and Go Bag Extended.

This allows for some different carry options, adding stability and versatility to switch between a sling bag and a backpack-style carry. Interestingly, the traps overlap and seal when a cross-body bag is desired, or the straps split equally for a comfortable, center-line, backpack carry option. Additionally, they have been internally upgraded and lined with Velcro.

SOMA After Action – S.O.Tech and DynGlobal

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Apparently S.O.Tech drew quite a crowd at the recent Special Operations Medical Association conference in Tampa, Florida. This was in part due to their work with DynGlobal on tactical solar power and water filtration technology. We’ve actually given you a sneak peek of their collaborations during our Summer OR coverage.

Utilizing S.O.Tech’s new “VIPER” Plate Carrier, DynGlobal produced a “solar harvesting” panel to provide USSOCOM with significantly higher levels of “renewable” energy from the sun. In addition to the use of solar power and a lightweight battery system that integrates into the VIPER Plate Carrier and S.O.Tech packs, they also displayed a hydration pack filtration system that removes bacteria and other impurities including radioactive isotopes, a portable blood warming and cooling pack, an MBITR solar powered radio charger, and a portable micro air conditioning unit for vehicles and tents.

The center point of the display was a set of light weight foldable high output rugged solar panels that can power individual tactical electronics, medical encampments, FOB’s and command centers. As a reference to the importance of DynGlobal’s innovations, a typical solar panel available on the market today can generate energy to power a cell phone after 10-12 hours (less than 10% conversion efficiency), DynGlobal’s proprietary panels are so efficient that they can power a laptop in less than one hour at greater than 40% efficiency. These technology improvements mean solar power is now efficient enough to be deployed into the tactical environment. S.O.Tech and DynGlobal have been working with SOF over the past year to develop S.O.Tech’s new VIPER plate carrier and load carriage system integrating DynGlobal’s solar and power technology. Their system allows the Soldier to drop his MBITR radio into a S.O.Tech radio pouch which integrates a radio charger. It will charge the radio’s battery while in the pouch using power harvested from the solar panel and battery pack. Essentially, anything with a battery (GPS, cell phone, laser range finder, NODS, flashlight, tablet PCs, Sat Phones and survival beacons) can be similarly charged, reducing the need for heavy and costly batteries. SOTech’s Jim Cragg and Neil Trusso are pictured above wearing the VIPER Vest system and holding the vest mounted solar panel with a light weight 60 or 120 watt battery. Rob Hill, DynGlobal’s solar engineer and kit integrator is pictured holding a representation of warrior and camp-supporting solar power and water filtration system. Make sure you visit S.O.Tech at next month’s SHOT Show where they will be exhibiting this technology along side DynGlobal.
