New Spanish Camo – MultiCam Ripoff?

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

In January we published an article with the purported front runner for the new Spanish camo pattern. Since that article the US Army selected MultiCam for use in Afghanistan and shortly after the Spanish Army announced that they are going to adopt the two patterns below. A simple glance will bring one word to mind and that is, “MultiCam”. it appears, that unlike the UK and US, they wanted to do it on the cheap. Soldier Systems Daily has verified that the Spanish military did not consult with Crye Precision in development of these patterns. Oddly, the Spanish Army is referring to this new camo as “digitized” due to the squared off edges on some of the shapes but they could hardly be considered true digital patterns when compared to UCP or CADPAT.

Quite a few countries have jumped on the MultiCam band wagon. Some have licensed the technology and unfortunately, some have not. StrikeHold! has a great article on MultiCam derivatives.

Aside from the concern over the origin of the pattern the fit seems to be at issue as well. While this new uniform closely resembles the US ACU, apparently Spanish troops are a bit unhappy about the cut of the trousers, forcing them to go “Marcando Paquetorro”.

District 9: Armor

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Wonder about the armor worn by the Multi-National United (MNU) in the movie “District 9”? Designer Greg Broadmore posted an article on his blog giving some background on some of the designs used in the movie. In addition to the armor, the article also mentions the modified Toyota HiLux pickups used in the movie.

Small Arms Collimator

Monday, March 8th, 2010

At the recent NAVEXFOR expo in Virginia Beach I was introduced to the Small Arms Collimator (SAC). It is an optical device that allows shooters to confirm zero and/or re-zero weapons without live fire.

Small Arms Collimator

Rather than batteries it relies on a Tritium light source so it can be used day or night. When properly employed the Collimator provides zero accuracies within 1 MOA. Since no rounds need be fired zero can be checked in the field and the SAC is not only compatible with iron sights but with optical and night vision sights as well. Additionally, it is available for a wide variety of small arms including the M16 family of weapons.

The SAC is manufactured in the UK by Pyser-SGI, Ltd and offered exclusively in the US by Telluric Group. Visit Telluric Group for additional information on the Small Arms Collimator.

Thodio abox

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

We ran across this one on Gizmodo. It’s a speaker system mounted in a .50 ammo box. The speakers light up and it’s lined with vibration dampening material to ensure clear sound. It is iPod ready and integrates a rechargeable battery so that it is self-contained. I mean at 350 euros (Kevlar speakers 475 euros) it’s a real steal right?
