Salomon Quest

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Early on, we wrote about the Salomon Quest. During the recent inclement weather here in Hampton Roads we wore them during our outings and it jogged our memories. Yes, literally “we”, as we all own a pair.

Salomon Quest - Grey

Quite simply, they rock. Ultra-lightweight, comfortable right out of the box, and waterproof they are favorites around the home office. The boot is built on the same last as the Salomon XA Pro 3D running shoe; their most popular footwear model and is a beefed up “light hiker” that is intended to protect the wearer’s foot in harsh terrain, even while carrying a heavy load. The sole uses Salomon’s 4D Chassis. The outsole has an ascending lug pattern in the front of the sole, and a braking pattern in the rear. Beneath the foot is a cushioning pad, while the chassis protects against twisted ankles, and then an additional cushioning pad to absorb rocks and roots underfoot (4 layers= 4D). In addition to the Grey shown above there is also an Orange variant that may interest Search and Rescue professionals.

The Quest is available from RP Tactical.

Vltor AR Stock Adapter for the FN SCAR

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Military Morons has published a preview of a new adapter from Vltor for the FNH SCAR 16/17S that allows you to replace the factory stock with a Mil-Spec AR-style stock. On the downside, you can’t fold the AR stock with the adapter. While we feel that the FNH stock is one of the best things it has going for it, this new product from Vltor does increase the versatility of the SCAR as a platform. It also signals that industry doesn’t see the SCAR going away anytime soon and is willing to develop dedicated products for it. Look at this as a victory on the brush fire front of the SCAR WARS.

Moleskine Unveils iOS Device Covers

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

We have written about the legendary Moleskine notebooks in the past, and we also rely on both an iPhone as well as an iPad. So were were quite pleased to find out that Moleskine will be releasing what they are referring to as new hybrid tools. These include a Tablet Cover for iPad and a Smartphone Cover for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Naturally, the covers will include a built-in blank page notebook. Fortunately, the notebooks are replaceable since they fill up fast and we prefer the gridded paper versions.

The new covers resemble Moleskine notebooks, featuring rounded corners and the classic elastic band to keep the smooth black cover secured. Additionally, the inside is lined with suede to prevent to prevent screen damage. Pre-order now from www.moleskine.com.

WTF is a Clip?

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Ok, every once in awhile I lose my mind and I go on a rant. Today, you get to listen in. WTF is a “clip”? Oh sure , I know what it is, and what Hollywood and the main stream media think it is. But, what it truly is, is a codeword. “Clip” is a word used to evoke certain emotions in an audience; negative emotions. So I immediately know, the second that word is used in a publication, news report, or film that the author has an agenda. Whether they even realize it or not. They are attempting to shock.

I also know that when I overhear a couple of guys at a gun show looking for some “clips” for their gats that they are just as much a part of the problem. They are doing it because they heard it used in a movie or on the news (but chances are good they didn’t read it). It’s “cool”. The term evokes negative emotions and that is the whole point isn’t it? It is, if you are the kind of guy who is looking for “clips”.

It’s all a mindset. “Clips” are bad. Even I think so because the term makes guns look dangerous. And that’s exactly what the gun grabbers want. So, turn it around. Make it work for you. If you find the need to scare off bad guys with a firearm, remember to tell them you have a 30 round “clip” and they will run away in fear. Just make sure yours actually works, in case the other guy bought some at a gun show.

More on the Kifaru OTW Bag

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

With all of the applications users are coming up with to use the OTW Bag, Kifaru probably should have named it after Felix the Cat’s Bag of Tricks. Since the Kifaru Fold Outs also fit in the bag it can be pre-configured for virtually any contingency.

If you’re still on the fence about buying one, we suggest you check out the Kifaru forums which have a significant amount of data and feedback from users.

Superpowered Power Suit

Friday, October 1st, 2010

From Defense Contractor Raytheon comes the XOS 2 robotics suit. A powered exoskeleton, it greatly increases the strength of the wearer while being lighter and requiring 50 percent less power than its predecessor, the Scarcos XOS. This new tethered version is tied to its shore power source and would be used to lift heavy objects for logistics purposes, such as munitions and supplies, and will be applied to the theater of operations in about 5 years. A non-tethered combat variant, including only the lower half to help alleviate the strain of heavy equipment, will be applied 3-5 years after the tethered variant. There is no word, however, on when a variant suitable to combat Alien queens will be introduced.

2nd Generation AK Ratchet Charging System

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Compatible with AK-47 and AK-74 clones, the Ratchet Charging System from Dublin AK Systems, puts the charging handle out of the way of the weapon’s action, yet doesn’t prevent the use of side mounted optics. With the increasing popularity of the AK family of weapons it is nice to see work like this being accomplished. Other than some significant cosmetic changes, the major upgrade is a non-reciprocating charging handle. Perhaps since they have licked the AK’s shortfall, they could take a look at the SCAR.

Thanks to The Firearm Blog and Strike Hold! for the heads up.
