Field Gourmet: Dutch Rations

Monday, October 25th, 2010

An intrepid Dutch reader sent us this report on their issue ration packs.

It consists of one of the boxes shown in the photos plus two meals in a can or sachet which can be eaten both hot or cold. These main meals are based on standard Dutch meals like cooked potatoes, veggies and some meat to lasagna, stews and special meals like halal-prepared.

The contents inside the box have varied over the years. Studies showed that Soldiers are attracted to ‘branded’ items so there was a transition to items like the Mentos bar and chewing gun. A little while back the dark chocolate bar was replaced by a Mars bar. But luckily they changed it back to this delicious chocolate! Our reader also commented that he also likes the recent addition of toothpicks.

Dutch Soldiers are taught to make a snack pack from ration items like a packet of biscuits, the chocolate bar, Mento’s and the dextrose. They keep it in their smocks so they can always grab a quick snack.

What is most telling is that our reader reports that the Dutch troops deployed to “derka-derka-stan” don’t use these rations much since the heat makes them go bad quickly. The tend to rely on US issue MRE’s or would make a meal from what their wives/moms would send.

The Fitness Explorer Interviews Mark Twight

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

The Fitness Explorer just published a 60 Second interview with Gym Jones founder Mark Twight. Twight is well known in military circles for his mountaineering training as well as his pivotal role in the development of the Protective Combat Uniform.

What struck us most about the interview is his answer to the question, “What is fitness to you?” to which he answered, “The ability to do a task.” Check out the entire interview that is, while short, gets to the heart of the matter,

Maxpedition Hits the Big Box

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

One of our readers gave us a heads up on this one. Maxpedition products are available on the Walmart website. This is the first time we have seen a brand founded in the tactical arena make it over into mainstream sales but it probably couldn’t have happened with most of the nylon gear in our industry as the cost of Berry compliance is too high for the major discount chains. Walmart.com lists 65 Maxpedition products but we haven’t run across any of them in stores yet.

Former Civilian USASOC Employee Named in Bribery, Extortion Indictment

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

So was the headline in the Fayetteville Observer’s Military section last week. While the details of the story have been a well kept industry secret for years, it is refreshing to see that the Government has finally taken action.

Former medical plans specialist with USASOC’s Command Surgeon Office Joseph J. Marak was charged with 35 counts in late September, including one count of extortion and 17 counts each of bribery as well as receiving a gratuity from a company doing business with a government entity while being an official of said entity.

The Government alleges he made about $700,000 from his activities associated with the CASEVAC program. The Government’s indictment alleges that Marak steered business toward two companies and then demanded compensation. It is further alleged that he received $13,00 in traveler’s checks while still in Government service. The indictment then alleges that he was paid $350,000 for consulting work between July and December 2006 by Skedco after he left Government service.

S.O.Tech, which is an advertiser on SSD has sued both Marak and Skedco in a civil law suit which is now on hold due to the Federal criminal case. The civil suit was first filed in 2007 in Oregon and alleges that Marak provided S.O.Tech’s company secrets to Skedco and bilked S.O.Tech out of patent rights by convincing them to their patented designs over to Skedco in a joint venture scheme.

Get Medieval On Their Asses With Nerf N-Force Weapons!

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Besides their fine selection of dart-based projectile guns, Nerf also has a variety of hard foam melee weapons with which to pummel the various whiners and non-believers. Although there is a variety of wimpy swords available, the really cool implements of destruction are as follows:

The Stonewall Shield and Dagger, which lets you hide behind its bulk, defending yourself from any number of attacks, while swiftly stabbing away with your free hand.

The Warlock Axe. I’m not sure what qualifies it for the Warlock title, because I’m pretty sure it’s not magical, but it sure is fun to swing around.

And my personal favorite, the Battlemaster Mace Axe, which is a mace… with blades. ‘Nuff said.

It’s also worth mentioning one ‘Klaw Hatchet’, which seems to be spoken of in rumors. Despite its apparent rarity, I am in possession of one, and although its pretty small compared to the rest of the N-Force series, it can still cause quite a bit of damage.

As great as these weapons are, however, it would really turn the cool factor up to 11 if they made Nerf Lirpa, so it would be possible to reenact this classic scene:

That’s right. Every good article should end with a little Trek, and I aim to please.

Level Peaks Technical Windproof Smock

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

For operations in Afghanistan, the Smock is an excellent shell choice. Designed by troops with a great deal of operational experience who set out to incorporate improved design features into the classic smock design, the new Technical Windproof Smock from Level Peaks is a base level product and customization is available. The Smock is made from a 50/50 NYCO ripstop shell and has the following properties:
• Nanosphere with built in mosquito repellent.
• Wind, sand, & water resistant. This aids the resistance to stain from blood, oils, and other liquids.

As you can see the materials story is impressive.

The standard features are anything but standard fare. We could literally cover two pages detailing the features of the Technical Windproof Smock. For example, there are pockets galore. Sleeve pockets, chest pockets, Napoleon pockets, and fleece lined ‘Slack Time’ hand pockets. Plus, Level Peaks uses the best materials.

You need to head on over to Level Peaks to check out not only the Smock but their other clothing offerings as well. Available standard in MultiCam and DPM 95. Also offered by contract only in MTP, Digi Cam (MARPAT), Black, Foliage Green, and Sand.
